Strange to see if we've offered him more than a 1 year contract at that age after the GB situation.

£3m for a 34 year old with 1 year left on his contract who offers nothing more than what we already have. Hard to argue in favour with the board and Dyche with this one...

This is a very good signing but won't impress those who were happy to see Georgie Boyd go.
Stacks of experience at the top level and he'll win us some points.
A good start and a lot better than Tom Ince etc

Re: Walters fee agreed
What's the record number of Ireland internationals present at one club?
Re: Walters fee agreed
Does this give us more flexibility in terms of formations?
i.e. can he play in a 2 up top, and as a wide man as part of a front 3?
could make 4-5-1 more of a viable option at times, with transitions to 4-4-3

The difference with Boyd is that Walters has lots of top half PL and International experience.
Re: Walters fee agreed
You can almost guarantee it would be a 2 year deal or at least a 1, with an option to either party.ClaretinMyBlood wrote:Strange to see if we've offered him more than a 1 year contract at that age after the GB situation.

Re: Walters fee agreed
Yes it gives us more flexibility. Walters can play wide in a 4 or a 5, or up front. And he's a better player than Boyd, which is probably why we'd be willing to give him 2 years and Boyd one.
He can replace Boyd, he can replace Barnes and to a limited extent, he can replace Gray as well. Solid footballer, decent athlete, loads of Premier League experience and he's hard as nails and committed as they make them too. For peanuts - and these days, this is peanuts, as I imagine much of the fee depends on us staying up - I think this is fine business.

Boro fans seem to think that if this goes through that it clears the way for them to sign Assombalonga

I don't think many said Boyd was too old. But plenty said we have to upgrade and that's exactly what we're doing.ablueclaret wrote:And Boyd was too old.

Little relevance comparing Boyd's contract offer to any contract we enter into with Walters.

He can also play central midfield and 'in the hole' behind a striker. In fact I'd say his best position is an attacking central midfielder.

£2m plus add-ons according to Stoke paper. Expecting Saxo along shortly to give us the benefit of his extensive knowledge of Walters' early career. Im assuming it was " pre boycott " of course.

Re: Walters fee agreed
Burnley fans write off a player who represented his country 8 times last season and is hungry to get to the World Cup Finals in 2018 and will give us a wealth of experience and knowledge at this level.
He is a snip at £3M and I think that he will prove to be a real asset this coming season.

Hes a striker, an average one. Might put the graft in but its not a good signing rather have barnes. At least Barnes has age on his side

I always thought he was an attacking midfielder, must be behind the times, Club need to get a Shamrock put into the club crest now, I believe Sean applied for citizenship on hearing of the Brexit vote, he prefers to be known as a European

Re: Walters fee agreed
If Walters is one piece of a wider, more ambitious transfer window for us this summer, then this is an ok signing.
If he is the height of our ambition in wide and attacking areas, then we have a problem.
He will be a decent enough squad player for us, but I do hope we're looking at better players to play more frequently.

Re: Walters fee agreed
He's played both attacking central midfield and upfront for Stoke, but he can probably do a job anywhere across midfield or upfront, if needed. I remember having him in my dream team 3-4 years ago and he was classed as a midfielder, who sometimes played upfront (sometimes attacking central midfield), so he was a good purchase for that reason.CnBtruntru wrote:I always thought he was an attacking midfielder

A Dyche type signing- plenty of fight, experience and works hard.
Seems comfortable on the ball which is a big plus.
Could be a great cog in the wheel of the team.

So is he a striker or a wide man? Or a grafting utility player? Bit confused.
Even the complimentary posts appear to either contradict where he plays or damn him with feint praise. Experienced grafter is the theme so far.

Cracking signing. Works as hard as anybody and looked to have plenty in his legs when I saw him last season. We know exactly what we're getting with this signing and a 25yr old with similar ability on a 3yr contract would have cost £20m instead of 2. Keeps th big money freed up for other players too. Should prove good business sense whilst we're still trying to establish ourselves in this league.

Re: Walters fee agreed
From a brief look at social media, Stoke fans look really disappointed to be losing him.
Re: Walters fee agreed
His career suggests he is anything but a poor mans Barnes. On its own, it's not a signing to set the pulse racing but alongside other signings, it could prove to be a master stroke.
Great experience and flexibility, for a few million, what's to complain about? He knows the league and that counts for a lot.

Walters and Barnes up front will certainly bring the physicality Dyche likes. It's as uninspiring as they come really. He'll do ok, but he's hardly getting the pulse racing!!

Re: Walters fee agreed
Well happy with this and glad it seems to be done early so he can have his pre-season with us. I can see him being popular, one to get proper stuck in but with much more of a goal threat than Boyd. With Joey gone we're missing a leader outside of the back 5, Walters ticks that box. It's not a long term thing but it's an upgrade on Boyd and it's bags of experience playing our sort of game in a number of positions and formations at this level. Valuable, good signing.
Re: Walters fee agreed
Scored a cracker against us last season.

Re: Walters fee agreed
Still waiting for that exciting winger, or the midfield playmaker ,Walters is solid but don't see him as a game changer at this level. Presume he is Boyd's replacement, suppose as a short-term fix he will be adequate.JohnMcGreal wrote:If Walters is one piece of a wider, more ambitious transfer window for us this summer, then this is an ok signing.

Re: Walters fee agreed
Personally I just don't get the negativity about his age, the big daft Swede Man U had last year, was older than Walters and he ended up top scorer for Man U, if Walters is our top scorer next year would it matter how old he was?
