Were they "naff" or actually a damn fine rock band?

Saw them at Luton College in about 1969 and they were the loudest band I have ever heard.
I also remember the filthy things Noddy Holder in between their songs was telling us guys to do to the girls there

They did what they had to do to make money, but they are/were a very good band away
from the commercial stuff. They were very accomplished musicians.

An embarrassment to popular music. The guitar player had the worst haircut of all time. The bass player struck up a relationship with Fred West's wife and they were just so awful.

Good band. I liked their later stuff like We'll Bring the House Down. I used to know Noddy's wife by the way. Much younger than him.

Re: Slade
No one has mentioned this yet...easily their best song [imo]..
'Cos I love you'... 1971...a number one single for four weeks....they had six number one singles, so despite the slagging off above, they were doing something right.
'Coz I Luv You" is a song by British band Slade, written by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea and produced by Chas Chandler. It was the band's second hit single in the UK and the first of six number ones. Released on 30 October 1971, it was last seen on the charts on 5 February 1972 at #44. According to Holder's autobiography the single sold half a million copies in only two weeks.
The song was typical of Slade's brash, stomping style and prominently featured Jim Lea's electric violin. It quickly reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, where it stayed for four weeks in November 1971. In the first week of its release, the single reached #26, followed by #8 the following week and #1 the week after. The single was #1 for four weeks and stayed at #3 for three weeks after that..' WIKI.

First LP I ever bought as a lad of nine? "Old New Borrowed and Blue" - great album with some fantastic tracks
Reminds me of my junior school at Hargher Clough. All the lads were into Slade and Sweet whilst the girls were into the Osmonds and David Cassidy
Heres a mellow track from that album

Re: Slade
I saw them c 1969/70 in their pre-fame skinhead phase playing at the uni I attended. I can't remember much about it other than I enjoyed the (fairly rowdy) set & there was a violin played at some stage (which surprised me).
Being no "arenas" in those days, you could see some very big bands cheaply at uni gigs- bands much bigger than Slade were at the time..
I was never into the "glam" scene and not a big fan of Slade during their hit years but always respected the band members for the "no bullshit" approach.

Re: Slade
At or nearing their peak in mid 73 drummer, Don Powell was involved in a car crash which resulted in the death of his girlfriend. Jimmy Lea's brother, Frank, filled in temporarily with the 'sticks' whilst Powell recovered. Hill and Powell still remain as originals in the band. My favourite song is 'Bangin Man'.
Re: Slade
What a strange name for a pop group. I wonder if they were named after the Slade School of Art? They should have split in the early 70's cos they were naff after that. I queued up to by 'Cum on Feel The Noiz' at Ames record bar in town. Still a great record.

So them at Donnington monsters of rock, when acdc headlined . Prior to seeing them thought of them as a novelty pop act. But they seriously rocked and almost stole the whole event. If I remember right they were the fourth or Fifth headliner. I remember thousands of loo rolls being fired into the crowd at the finale. Which made me laugh

Re: Slade
Since I'm in good company I'll add my 2 cense. Along with Bay City Roller type bands and Disco, Slade were utter s**te.
Re: Slade
Hampstead, the fairly common perception that Slade were a skinhead band 'first' is a bit of a myth: the band had been together since circa 66-67 playing 'rock music' and had a long-haired ' look' to go with it. By 1969 and having been spotted by ex Animal and ex Jimi Hendrix manager Chas Chandler their first album had attracted little attention. Although accounts vary as to whose idea it was to adopt the "skinhead look" it's usually attributed to the band's management/publicist as a ploy to attract the media's attention.

Never got glam, although I do like the 70's. I liked Transformer (Lou Reed), Electric Warrior (T Rex) and Bowie and Mott the Hoople but Slade just represent a side of that era that makes me cringe.Pstotto wrote:That's not fair boiledclaret, to lump them with BCR and Disco.
Fairs fair though, Noddy comes across as a top bloke.

Re: Slade
I remember running home from school because Slade were on Crackerjack !! As I recall it was Cum On Feel the Noize with Noddy Holder wearing his top hat covered in shiny silver discs. Used to buy all their singles on the red Polydor label and think that , possibly , Gudbuy t'Jane my favourite. Also remember going to Brierfield Unit 4 to watch their film Slade in Flame. Remember How Does It Feel being a top tune in that.
Pure nostalgia for me. A lad's band for those of a certain (teenage) age in the early '70s. Bit of an apprenticeship for punk in slightly later life. I actually saw them around 1982 in Hull whilst at Uni.....they were superbly loud and Jimmy Lea was a top violinist !

Slade vs T.Rex was the Blur / Oasis or Beatles / Stones of that era. Slade for the toughs and T.Rex for the softies ( me included )
I can't vouch for their albums but the were a great singles band.

Slade were great fun, from a time when watching music shows on the telly was fun too, with all the ridiculous costumes and all. I loved watching Top of the Pops back then. I always remember seeing Sweet doing Blockbuster!
Music was much more fun in those days, with some rare breeds of front-men. Freddie, Marc, Noddy.. Dave! Whatever you think of them, they offered more to music then any of today's soulless, bland nobodies.
Granted it sounds dated now, and I only know the bands by their singles really, but they're from a time I look back on fondly.
That's right! That's right! That's right! That's right! I really love your tiger light...

Used to love Slade.
Had/have a few of their albums 'Slayed Alive', Old new , borrowed and blue' 'Flame' 'Sladest' - they were of an era but certainly not 'naff', in my opinion.
Went to see Slade 2 consisting of Dave Hill, Don Powell, some guy from Sweet and a bloke from Mud at Colne Muni few years back, T-Rextacy were also on -great night of glam rock nostalgia
