If you could own a gun would you?
I currently hold an AK47 type rifle and Remington Shotgun in a gun club purely for leisure purposes, however it is likely that the laws here will relax soon (already passed in the lower house), so looking at something more compact potentially for at home.
A few friends with the existing A licence have the skorpion and say its a really handy piece of kit

No interest in it whatsoever and I'm glad that the law here prevents it,

Re: If you could own a gun would you?
I'll be honest, no I wouldn't, mainly because I wouldn't trust myself to be sensible with it at all times.
I'd either do something stupid, or lose my temper about something else and shoot someone.
Also I don't live in a society where I have to wonder if the person in front of me has a gun 99.99% of the time and I quite like that feeling.

Any one who has seen that 1980's documentary series called The A-Team will know that guns don't kill people.
With that in mind then yes, I would have a gun if I could. I'd then be able to rattle off hundreds of rounds at them taxis who beep their horns numerous times (like brainless f***ing mongs) outside someones house.

Unless 109's bounce your gaff frequently, then definitely yourself with the .50.
I'd love to fire a few down a range, .357 Magnum, Thompson SMG, AA-12 shotgun, Bren gun, Mac 10, UZi.
No desire to own one though.

Re: If you could own a gun would you?
If firearms were made widespread legal in this country- yes, I'd acquire one. It'd be just to keep in the house for defence purposes.
I dont currently feel the need to have one because anybody breaking into my house is unlikely to have one so I'm happy to defend myself otherwise if I have to.
If firearms become widely possessed I'd want to have some parity in defence in my home.

Re: If you could own a gun would you?
It's funny Engineer because next door used to have an old lawnmower that we nicknamed the Messerschmitt, because it sounded like a prop fighter plane.
I would have loved two Browning's then to take it out. Lawnmowers aren't known for their evasive manoeuvres and aerial ability, so it would have been easy.

Re: If you could own a gun would you?
When I was a school boy I was a member of the shooting team. We competed in a schools league shooting .22 rifles at 25 yards on army shooting ranges. We were pretty good and the won the league two years running, 1969/70, from memory. There was a news report in the shooting range about an accident at another range. Someone was shot - and later died.
More recently, I had a boss in Houston, Texas, who was a very competitive clay pigeon shooter. Almost every time I visited Houston he'd say "let's go down to the Houston Gun Club and shoot some clays. We'd always start with the safety rules: keep the gun "broken" except when you are ready to shoot, always discharge shot before leaving the station, never, never, ever point the shotgun towards a person, etc, etc. I was "no good" at shooting clays - moving targets are very different from stationary targets! But, my boss entered us both in a competition (though he wasn't having me on his team - he planned to win). He lent me one of his "spare" shotguns - he seemed to have 5 or 6 most times. So, I'm in a group of 4 and we've shot the first station and moved on to the second. (The other guys were competitive, upset if they'd missed 1 out of 10 targets. I'd scored 5). My turn on the second station, shoot, miss, shoot miss again, shoot - but it didn't the cartridge didn't fire and it wouldn't eject from the gun. So, now I've got a live round stuck in the barrel. And, I remember all the safety rules, but the gun will not "break" - it is all jammed. OK, so I'm not panicking - well, I was getting a bit "hot and sweaty" but this is Houston, 100F and high humidity - so I tell the rest of my team that my gun is not working and there's a "live round" in the chamber. Perhaps I should drop out and see if I can find someone to make the gun safe. No, remember Americans are very friendly, one of the other guys says I can share his gun and we will shoot the rest of the 10 (or 12) stations. Oh, and "you can just prop your shotgun (with the live round in the chamber) on the back of the "golf buggy" it will be alright there." I was as nervous as hell, all I could think about was the accident that was waiting to happen and I was in charge of the gun that would be the cause of the accident. The Houston Gun Club say they've never had an accident - perhaps I was going to spoil their record. The next 90 minutes or so was very difficult - and my shooting just got worse (if that was possible). Apart from the "live" shotgun all I could think about was the tv documentary I'd watched in the hotel the night before: "Shotgun accidents when the safety catch fails." And, my shotgun was the same model that was featured in 2 or 3 of the accidents that were in the documentary. One man was reported to be spending his life in prison for killing his wife - the defence claim was the safety catch had failed. Someone else had shot his own legs off when the gun fired unintentionally.
My answer to the question: NO, NO, NO. I will NOT own a gun.
EDIT: Oh, and my Houston based boss always told me that if he was ever stopped by the police the first thing he would show them would be his "carry" licence. And, he had it in his car where he could show it to them easily before they got nervous and they started defending themselves against their fear that the person they'd stopped might have a gun and might shoot at them first.
PS: Just seen this report on BBC: "Australian bride-to-be shot dead by US police after 911 call"

Re: If you could own a gun would you?
The indigenous people are too busy erecting teepees on the lawn of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, and covering up statues in Halifax. So, no need to worry about them, either. Besides, if they started shooting people indiscriminately, they wouldn't get their annual annual half loaf of bread and hunk of cheese that the Great White Mother promised them. They'd also lose all of their money from having a monopoly on the casino business.

Re: If you could own a gun would you?
The U. S. is full of funny laws. But the "funniest" (for lack of a better term), is that you're not actually doing anything illegal until you start squeezing off a few rounds with the local constabulary. Especially if your "defending" your home property. So, build your own version of the Maginot Line and your own personal arsenal, flame-throwers included. The courts can't touch you.
Re: If you could own a gun would you?
The type of people who would most like to own a gun, are generally the type of people most people wouldn't like to own a gun.

Re: If you could own a gun would you?
Unsure if I'd like a gun really. Like some others, I'd probably only want one if I knew that a lot of other people had guns. Since that's not an issue where I live, I'll say no!
Mind you, if I could have any (obviously speaking hypothetically) gun then I'd go all out. I'd quite like an LMG like the MG4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIgEVfp ... freload=10" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Just sprayin' and prayin'.

Yes I would own a gun. Then whoever has the audacity to break into our home whilst the wife and I are in bed will get a belly full of lead;not scarper like the 2 scumbags did 22 years ago in the early hours of 20th may 1995.
Seriously, they would have got it.The adrenalin rush was enormous, took at least a week for it to fully calm down.
Oh,and my 10 year old son was a nervous wreck for quite some time after.
Edit: Forget to add that the **** were never caught.

Re: If you could own a gun would you?
Where I live I can own a gun and in fact own three. Two shotguns for fowling and a deer rifle.
I've never had someone point a gun at me on purpose, nor have I ever had to worry about if someone else was carrying a weapon. I guess it depends on where you live...
The other day I did have someone I was speaking to for work from Canada ask me out of the blue how many people I knew who'd been shot? I told him the truth which is zero. He seemed very confused that I could live in the US and not know someone who's been shot.
I've made both my daughters go thru a gun safety course, in case they grow up to be involved with another gun owner. I want them to at least remember how to put a safety on and see if a gun is loaded. Other then that, it's not something I ever need to think about.

US police shoot and kill another innocent civilian. It's getting all too familiar over there now. Owning a gun wouldn't protect you from the people who are supposed to be protecting you.

The latest one involved 2 policemen. As a pedestrian leaned into the open window to ask the driver of a police cruiser a question, his partner, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, shot and killed the unarmed citizen. Un-freaking-believeable.

I also could legally own a firearm, and carry too, but I'm avidly against.
Mind you, my daughter is twelve. When she reaches 16 I've warned mrs NRC of my intent to buy a rifle, which I will duly be polishing anytime she deems to bring a likely lad home. And I'm not kidding.... I'll make sure I put the fear of God into any boy, no matter the quality of his candidacy as a suitor.

Re: If you could own a gun would you?
I think John mac could do more damage shouting than shooting. Them RSM types think rifles should be in the shoulder, ready for the words of command "general salute!"ZizkovClaret wrote:Sure JohnMac would royally take the **** if he saw my technique lol
And in answer to the OP, yeah I'd love to own a proper firearm. Really miss the pleasure of shooting bullet rifles on a range.

You used the word mong there BOT. Do you know what this word means?Bin Ont Turf wrote:Any one who has seen that 1980's documentary series called The A-Team will know that guns don't kill people.
With that in mind then yes, I would have a gun if I could. I'd then be able to rattle off hundreds of rounds at them taxis who beep their horns numerous times (like brainless f***ing mongs) outside someones house.

Remember, guns don't kill people; it's the high velocity projectiles leaving their muzzles that do.

Re: If you could own a gun would you?
I can legally buy a gun. Only once did I think about it (after I went to bed drunk and left all the windows wide open and my dog woke me up because someone was prowling outside). it's a risk because if the guy is unarmed but stronger than you then suddenly he has YOUR gun.
Admittedly, a naked drunk man wielding a baseball bat shouting "I have a fierce dog and I've called the police" isn't the best defense but it's reasonably effective.
