Burnley Born Premier League / First Division Players
Genuine question for all the BFC almanacs / anoraks....delete as appropriate
How many Burnley born Premier / First Division players have we had from the town play in the same season.
There is a real probability we will have two next season and possibly three if Tom gets a chance.
Jay Rodriguez - West Brom
Oliver Norwood - Brighton
Tom Anderson - Burnley
Have I missed any?
I think Chris Casper managed a couple of league appearances off the bench and there must have been more going further back Albert Cheesebrough and Jack Whitham etc but have we had three in the same season actually born in the town?
If it happens its a real achievement in this day and age considering the low percentage of English players who actually get to play at the highest level in England.
Take a bow Barden High School, St Theodores and St Christophers PE teachers and local junior football clubs.

you have specified Burnley but you don't have to stretch it too far to bring in Kevin Hird, Andy Payton, Colin Blant, etc.,

Brian Miller was Hapton and Marc Pugh is Bacup but Burnley specifically is more difficult.
As far as I know Andy Payton didn't play in the top division.

Micky Phelan is Nelson.
Slightly pedantic but interested to know just Burnley born players.

Re: Burnley Born Premier League / First Division Players
In the periods just before and just after the first World War we had several players on our books who were born in Burnley. I think the first time three appeared together in our first team was the '25/'26 season when Stephen Spargo, Harold Hargreaves and the great Jerry Dawson all featured together for us.
During that period we also had on our books, and born in Burnley, Clifford Heap, Walter Pollard and William Morgan who all made appearances in the first team during the '20's.

Thanks Royboy.
I thought we must have had more pre- war(s).
I must admit I did expect more post war which just goes to show what a great achievement it actually is / will be.
Ron Greenwood - great shout (I think we can allow Worsthorne )

Did Marcus ever play league football? I know he went to Bury but not sure whether he made their first team. As it happens, the Phelans don't qualify as they are from Nelson.TheFamilyCat wrote:I must have missed Gussie's top division appearances. I'd have thought he'd have mentioned it.

Re: Burnley Born Premier League / First Division Players
One name not mentioned on this thread so far is a Burnley-born player who played in an FA Cup Final at Wembley.
Any takers??
Also a player born in Burnley was Des Lancaster who was a decent enough left winger but only managed one game for our first team (away at Birmingham in the '56/'57 season). He would have played a lot more but was behind several others who were to become perhaps the best team ever to represent Burnley.

Cheesy did play for Leicester in the defeat to Tottenham in the '61 Final.
But the player I'm looking for was born in Burnley and played for Burnley in the '47 Final.

There was one on Barkerhouse Road, next to the Great Marsden, less than a mile from where their parents lived (although I'm unsure if they lived there when they were born).Grumps wrote:I don't know of any birthing hospital in Nelson, most people from Nelson were born in Burnley

There's also Nelson born David Wilson. Played on the right wing for Preston in the '64 FA Cup final. (Educated at Barden I believe) Played 1 game for Liverpool 1967. ( had to check that last bit...knew he got a transfer to Liverpool but was surprised he actually managed a 1st team game )

Incorrect.Grumps wrote:I don't know of any birthing hospital in Nelson, most people from Nelson were born in Burnley
There was a hospital on Netherfield Rd (Fern Hill I think) where a lot of Nelsoners were born if they weren't born at home.
There was a hospital, but not a birthing hospital across from what is now Nelson and Colne college, which was knocked down for the M65.

Shackleton was born in Padiham and in fact still lived in Padiham when he made his debut in '57.
Re: Burnley Born Premier League / First Division Players
Lived in Nelson around the time in question, never heard of fern Hill, most of us were born at bank hall burnley, I think there was one in Colne, Edith Watson? The one the other side of the m65 I cannot remember the name of, was a place you went to recover having had ops elsewhere I think, at least the people I visited there were in for that.Bin Ont Turf wrote:Incorrect.

We never signed him - although his name got into the Burnley Express more often than any other member of that team. He could often be found as 'David Hartley prosecuting' in the court case reports.tim_noone wrote:David hartley played in the 68 youth cup final.attended barden sec.mod and lived on barden lane.did he make the first team??

Re: Burnley Born Premier League / First Division Players
Edit Watson is the maternity unit at Burnley General - opened in mid to late 1960s I think. Prior to that the maternity hospital at Burnley was Bank Hall on Colne Road.Grumps wrote:Lived in Nelson around the time in question, never heard of fern Hill, most of us were born at bank hall burnley, I think there was one in Colne, Edith Watson? Re: Burnley Born Premier League / First Division Players
I was definitely born in a Nelson hospital in the early 50's. I'm curious after reading this thread to know it's name. Didn't live in the town for long because of my father was in the Police force and he got posted to Bacup, but lived in Vaughan Street.
Re: Burnley Born Premier League / First Division Players
The Edith Watson dept at Burnley is named after the original hospital I think
