How optimistic/pessimistic are you now?

Post by Claret&Green » Mon Jul 24, 2017 7:00 pm

Would be interested to know how others feel about the forthcoming season compared to this time last year.

More optimistic, Less optimistic or About the same?

Personally I'm slightly less optimistic!

As it stands, we don't have the necessary players. Add in a decent centre half, winger, striker (and maybe an attacking midfielder) and we've a decent enough chance to equal or better last season.

The squad is looking stronger, just a few for the first XI now.

I'm pretty optimistic but will be very optimistic if we can make those last few signings that most of us know we need.

I'll be optimistic of our chances of staying up again when we've added another couple of players. Another centre half and a wide midfielder and I think we're good to go.

Boo boo terrible we haven't spent millions....
We've a good chance of survival with Dyche at the at the helm as is. Looking forward to the season even if we didn't sign anyone else. Another CB is probably needed and no 10 would be ideal.

Too early to say. Decent signings so far. But need more signings spending millions in the process.

i think we now have a decent squad, a few weeks ago i was pessimistic but now im quietly confident that were gunna have a good campaign. if we can keep hold of andre, Brady is going to be awesome, and ithink were a stronger team than last season. i think we will be a force to be reckoned with and im sure we can finish top 10. i may sound over optimistic but i believe in what dyche can do and i believe in my beloved Burnley FC. cant wait!!!

Optimistic. Why shouldn't we be? We are in great shape both on and off the field. We are buying established PL first team regulars.

Why on earth would anyone be pessimistic???

Utterly baffling???

MORE optimistic.
POSITIVES: Manager and players have significantly more experience re "what it takes" in Prem; finance is that bit stronger; we have 3 newly promoted teams to try an get ahead of cf only 2 last season; the purchases we made during last season are better bedded in now.
NEGATIVES: we've lost Keane (& G Boyd); Marney is out for first part of season; the opposition know a bit more about us.

Optimistic, that's how I'll start the season and that's how I'll end it until safety or the other option is mathematically confirmed.

My mate however will be his usual rollercoaster of emotions all season

Probably about the same although last season at this time
I thought we might struggle to stay up and as it turned out
we were relatively comfortable even though we finished only one place above the bottom three.

Like other posters I think we need one or two more decent signings
and if we manage that then I'd be feeling relatively optimistic about our chances
even though it's probably going to be tougher this season than last.

Two more signings with the team starting off well in particular Defour, Gray and Tarkowski
and we should stand a good chance.
Some tough, very tough away fixtures to begin with but better to have them now than later on.

i agree jurek, as we proved last season, we played some big clubs early on and gave a few of them a fright, for some reason they seem overconfident and we exploited this, lets hope the same happens again and we can upset a few applecarts utc

I was certainly more concerned a year ago than I am now so that's positive. In truth I'm just revelling in being able to watch my club again in the top division of English football.

very optimistic, club has gained invaluable experience recently.
Dyche knows exactly what's required to sustain our continued status in the division.
Unfortunate to lose keane and co, but the new additions will do us proud.
Definately more optimistic than last season.

I'm probably a little more hesitant than some, by the looks of it, to write off the considerable loss of Keane. We're considerably weakened at the moment, need two or three quality signings for the first eleven, ideally younger players and not just ageing squad bloaters.

About the same.

The first XI hasn't really been upgraded since the season ended and we've strengthened the depth in some areas, but are weaker in others.

My main concern is that the post-January form doesn't continue.

If i got the OP correctly, the question was whether we're each more confident now than this summer.

At this stage last summer i think the only first team player who we'd signed was JBG, whereas this summer we've signed one £10 million midfielder and two squad players i expect will play at least as much and as effectively as JBG did last term. This time last year we had none of Hendrick, Defour, Westwood, Cork, Brady, Walters or Taylor, even accepting that we've lost Keane. The comparison with last season also suggests we'll continue to spend money until the end of the window.

Given all this, I'm astonished anyone is less optimistic now than they were this time last year. Seems to me a good example about how the goalposts of expectation shift over time. We need more of course, but we're pretty well placed and certainly far better placed than 12 months ago.

Too soon to tell. Hoping SD can talk second season syndrome out of them. For me that too often comes from players believing they've arrived.
We are where we are at the bookies for a reason and we will have to scrap for every point.
There are 7 or 8 clubs who could struggle if they don't get off to a good start.

There's always a possibility of second season syndrome bit I'm not sure the sort of squad we have is especially vulnerable to that.

And if you want the glass half full version, you'd note that weve about 8 players signed in the last 12 months who are currently going through their first pre season with us, and who will start the season better adjusted to our system, fitter and probably simply better footballers than they were at the end of last season. Players improve, just as Keane did in his 2.5 years here. We tend to leave that out if the equation.

Add to this, Sean Dyche has shown that he now knows what is needed to keep a team in the Premier League and the players who were with us at the start of last season all now have a Premier League season "under their belts." They will not be going out onto the pitch this August like they were last August as new comers to the Premier League. In August last year, yes, we'd won the Championship, but had we done enough to make the step up to the Premier League?

Of course, whatever we sort out re CH, we will miss Michael Keane. (I also wish George Boyd all the best). It looks like it will be very competitive to get a start in our midfield: Hendrick, Defour, Westwood, Cork, Brady, JBG, Walters (or more forward), plus Scott Arfield, plus Dean Marney (second half/when fit). Maybe there will be one or two changes before the window closes.

Great to be starting at Stamford Bridge: 19 more sleeps and we kick-off!

UTC - OPTIMISTIC.

This time last year, our best team was

Heaton
Lowton Mee Keane Ward
Boyd Marney Arfield Gudjonsson
Gray Vokes

Subs:
Robinson - Barnes - Darikwa - Tarkowski - Jones - Darikwa - Anderson

Now we've lost Keane and Boyd, gained Hendricks, Cork, Brady, Westwood, Taylor, Walters, Pope, Defour; and we've also proved that we can stop up even before some of those additions. I'm optimistic.

I'm with Claretspice with this one. So many key players have had their first preseason under Dyche plus 3 quality additions. Dyche himself is 12 months wiser and it's hard to see him not experimenting a little more with this squad. Defour looks really hungry and if he is Dyche fit and Tarks can fill the Keane gap we should be fine. I'd agree that another centre back and a number 10 type would be ideal but compared to last year this squad is immeasurably stronger. We are two divisions above our nearest and dearest, have kept the best manager we've had in living memory and still the moaners are out in force.

At the moment I don't think the 1st 11 is as strong as last season. If you go Barton, Keane, Boyd v Cork, Taylor, Walters

Barton v Cork - winner is Barton
Keane v Taylor - winner is Keane
Walters v Boyd - winner is Walters

That's just my opinion and obviously some play in different positions but in terms of the 1st team I can only see Cork starting and he's not as good a Barton. I seem to be in a minority but i'd love to see a new right back to replace Lowton not challenge him (I don't believe Bardsley is that man). That said, if Dyche gets Defour performing week in week out then that swings it in the positive direction. There is still time of course and Dyche will probably just do what he does and come up trumps again. It's the big time and I love it

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by Cork in our set up. Joey wasn't great for us when he came back (except for that goal).

In fairness he rarely lost the ball so if his inclusion means Hendrick can push up a little and play some football with Defour then the whole dynamic will change. I don't think he's strong enough to play that role but hopefully I'll be proved wrong

If we can get the Craig Dawson deal done which will be very difficult then id be very confident. Another winger and Il be chuffed.

Heaton
Lowton Dawson Mee Ward

Cork
Defour Hendrick

Walters Brady
Gray

Gray and Walters building up a real partnership shame about his fitness for now.

Tricky one. It's not quite as straight forward as comparing to 12 months ago because us staying up has meant further riches and having to push things on again so we are a different animal to last year.

I try and be as 'glass half full' as I can be when it comes to the Clarets...We're in a great position and have PL football to look forward to again. The squad looks to have some genuine depth now (which will be added to as and when Bradsley arrives imo). However, I beleive we also have to push the team on - as in the starting XI. So I still think we are 3 QUALITY signings short of where we would ideally like to be, although we still have just over a month to address this.

Fantastic achievement to stay up but you then need to push things on just to stand still in this league. I also fear our home form may not be as good as last season which would mean our away needs to pick up (better players will obviously assist with this).

So, as pleased as I am with the rounded depth that has been built, having a bit more knowledge of the challenge we face this year means I think we will struggle if we don't add those quality players to the starting XI.

I worry about the enormous gap left by Mr Keane.
Some very solid signings so far. But we need a very good cb soon.
Fingers crossed

Keane is a much bigger lose than many admit, the sum total of our signings up until now don't equal him, and then there's Barton and Boyd,
However if the Tarka Defour Gray axis works we should be fine, the question is will it ? and will it be tried?
