Re: The dreaded C word.
I was diagnosed with cancer ( oesophagus ) in 2009, and spent an awful ten days ( the Wembley play-off win was in the middle of it ) before my first meeting with my Consultant.
He told me it was a battle he was confident I would win and ( touch wood ) I did.
You've received the same sort of advice. You're young. You'll be ok.

I work with a guy who was diagnosed with this in 1990, so 26 years ago.
He cycles here everyday and is probably the fittest person in the place.

Re: The dreaded C word.
There are some really good awareness campaigns out there for different types of cancers and I think it's good to find out as much as you can about them.
Bloodwise did a very good advertisement a few months ago. There are many, many support groups meaning you are never alone.
No bugger had ever heard of mine (Myeloproliferative Neoplasm) but the support I've received since being ill in Dec 2014 has been brilliant. Including everyone on here during the darkest times.
And rather than being depressed by cancer I've felt the best way is to go at it full throttle!
No matter how many visits to the hospital and doctors appointments you have the best advice I can give is to keep on smiling, enjoy life and defeat whatever gets thrown at you!
Regards
Mark

How's it going Foshiznik?Foshiznik wrote:I (northernmaninsouth on the old site) went to A&E on Thursday night as I had a tight chest and have been treated for DVT for the last month or so. I am in total shock and don't really know what to do with myself as I am only 31, but have any of fellow clarets been through/going through this fight? Any tips?

Whilst difficult to bear, try and focus on the fact that it is treatable.
I'm going through my own cancer treatment and staying positive has helped me. Royal Surrey are amazing and I couldn't believe all the effort that was made for my benefit.
My 45 year old neighbour was diagnosed with leukaemia about 4 years ago. It has been difficult for him but he has done brilliantly.
Try and stay as positive as possible. The treatment you'll get will be world class. I wish you all the best and a full recovery.

Just been a story on BBC news about a youngish girl - 30ish - given the same diagnosis a few years ago. She was given a stem cell transplant and has just met the donor lad 2 years after the transplant. Thought of your post Foshiznik as hers was a story of real hope for other sufferers. Stay positive seems to be the consensus advice on here from people who have also suffered the big C. I wish you all the best with this fight.

Isn't blood cancer the type that only recently they've found a potential cure for? But they said it only currently works for blood cancer, not other types (yet). They said it's the biggest break through ever with blood cancer.
One thing I'd make sure and that's make sure you're happy with your consultant. Don't have someone who treats you as a number, make sure they talk to you like a human being.

Re: The dreaded C word.
Hi all,
Sorry I haven't been more regular on here.
Still currently in hospital. Was in ICU for 4 days as I contracted Swine flu, Fungal Pneumonia and a chest infection due to the low immune system, but now on the mend (still on o2 but close to nothing).
Have been told that once I'm off the medication for the respiratory issues and the oxygen, I will be able to continue the treatment as an outpatient so all is going well. I'm on my 3rd week of treatment and it now seems to be going well as my stats are ll in the right places.
I would just like to say that I really appreciate the words of support and wisdom and it is really fantastic.

Stay with it buddy - also on ICU as my little man who is fighting AML is ventilated. He had an infection in his line which spiralled.

Stay strong Foshiznik, the repetitive theme on this board is that you are not alone and so many people have had and beaten this disease and you will too. I have had treatment for Hodgkins Lymphoma and had chemotherapy/radiotherapy and a stem cell transplant and have been in remission since 2007. It`s a hard journey but just take it a day at a time.

Re: The dreaded C word.
Just a quick update for anyone interested.
I am about to start my 3rd stage of treatment and everything is going as well as I could have hoped for. The Leukaemia was down to about 0.5% on the normal test so I have just had a biopsy this week that is being sent to a consultant at Guys hospital as they supposedly have an even better machine for testing it at a minute molecular level.
That consultant is supposedly taken a keen interest in my case as I am possibly the only person in the UK with this Leukaemia and treatment plan.
If all continues as well as it has been I should be off the treatment and back to 'normal' in 12 weeks time.
Thanks again to you all for the support back whenn I was first diagnosed as it genuinely helped me. I am eternally grateful.

That is a positive story from you - well done on your own efforts to get well.
Good luck from me as you go forward with your treatment...UTC

Had a mate diagnosed with the same in his mid twenties 15 years or so ago, a fortnight ago he competed in a downhill mountain bike race 'Megavalanche' on Alpe D'Huez. Once he'd got over the initial shock of being told, he made a conscious decision that it was going to be the beginning of his life not the end, he believes attitude is the key. Good luck NMIS

Hi Foshiznik, all best wishes from another "northern man in the south."
I'm coming up to 5 months post-heart attack. Had an excellent session in the gym this morning. I know I'm not yet "Sean Dyche" fit, but I feel I'm heading that way. Not bad for 62 year old.
I'm sure you will also get through your health challenges.
