"Impulse" buys
With Darikwa moving on to Forest, I was thinking about some of the players bought over the years who had just played a blinder against us. Frank Casper, Doug Collins and Peter Noble are three absolute gems who come to mind. Any others?

Besart Berisha although I know it was international on the Turf.

Re: "Impulse" buys
I think it took us three years to sign Casper after the cup tie v Rotherham but Collins was snapped up almost immediately after a League Cup tie against Grimsby.

Re: "Impulse" buys
I don't know about playing a blinder (in fact I think he was distinctly average on the day), but I seem to recall Ian Moore getting a fantastic reception when playing against us at the Turf not long before he signed for us.

Was Robbie Painter an impulse buy? CT will know as he corrected me on him scoring against Maidstone within a minute of his debut.

Think you maybe wrong re Cas, if memory serves he signed in the close season after the Rotherham game and made his debut against Coventry, which was their first game in the top division and Cas scored at least one in a 3-1 Clarets win.

I'd forgotten about him. There was a big media deal made about him signing if I remember rightly. He did one flick with his foot and that was about the extent of his Burnley career.Dy1geo wrote:The legendary Tony Hancock

Re: "Impulse" buys
Casper played against us in the FA Cup for Rotherham in January 1964 and signed for us in summer 1967. He did score on his debut. We beat Coventry 2-1 with Willie Irvine getting the other.winsomeyen wrote:Think you maybe wrong re Cas, if memory serves he signed in the close season after the Rotherham game and made his debut against Coventry, which was their first game in the top division and Cas scored at least one in a 3-1 Clarets win.

Gaz O'Connor and Wade Elliot for Bournemouth against us on the Turf were great. I'm sure John Spicer also played.

He attempted a bicycle kick in a pre season friendly against Hibs and unsurprisingly missed the ball by a mile!ExistentialWanderer wrote:I'd forgotten about him. He sure did was exciting at the time! Only contribution he made I think was away at Stockport!
Re: "Impulse" buys
Didn't we sign the 'Tin Man' after he terrorised Ian Measham in the FA Cup ?

Derby. He was one of my favourites if only for winding up the Stockport players in the Play Off Final.gc14 wrote:Didn't we sign the 'Tin Man' after he terrorised Ian Measham in the FA Cup ?

John Gayle. Mullen signed him. If memory serves me right he was signed for the league cup tie at York, well it seemed that way

I think he scored in the game when we beat them 4-3 and we certainly signed him soon after that.Bordeauxclaret wrote:Did Ian Helliwell score against us for Stockport and sign for us not long after.

No he was a Panic buy or a very bad buy whichever you preferbox_of_frogs wrote:Was Leon Cort an impulse buy?
Re: "Impulse" buys
Leon Cort, gets a bad press but if memory serves me right after his first game, pundits on MOTD were waxing lyrically about him saying he could help us stay up. If only his header against Rovers had gone in how much different it could have been.
