We were awful on the whole but we played some fantastic stuff during the 02/03 season under Stan when Little and Blake's time overlapped. The cup game against Spurs springs to mind in particular. We made a mockery of their Premier League status, relentlessly attacking them in waves. Glen and Robbie were absolutely unplayable.

For me we were definitely at our most attractive and creative under the stewardship of Jimmy Adamson. I must give a mention to Jimmy Mullen's era, as even though we were playing at a lower level, the football was free flowing and easy on the eye. JM deserves great credit and I will always be thankful for what he achieved for the club.

There are different styles of football. A well organised machine where every player knows his job and does it when it comes off is great to watch and gets success so for me it is Dyche.
Re: Under Which Manager Did We Play The Best Football?
In my lifetime it has to be Mullen and Coyle.
We may have been Division 4 under Mullen but we had some players in that team who were far better than that level. Davis and Deary immediately spring to mind. Randall was a great footballer as well. The front three we're all brilliant on their day. Some great memories were made that season. Who did we put 5 past with 5 different scorers? A couple of the goals in that game were outstanding. The John Francis one-two and finish in particular.
Coyle just distilled belief in abundance. We had talent in the team but some of the football was way beyond anything any of them probably player prior or after. Eagles away at Sheffield Utd was unplayable for instance. The goals away at Reading sum that team up. It was a joy to watch and that's why it was so damn painful when he did what he did!!

just to back that up.Jimmy Mullens era was fantastic but only because of the success he brought us coupled with the dross we had suffered before.
Dyche doesnt get the credit he deserves,we may not be the most fluent passing side theres ever been. But has any Burnley side in our history had to play opposition of such quality on a weekly basis. With the odds stacked against us so much in terms of spending power.
Never witnessed the Adamson and Potts eras when we mixed it with the best at the top end of the table but it was a slightly more level playing field then.

It's often said that a manager is only as good as the players at his disposal. There may be some truth in that in which case Potts and Adamson were fortunate to have some fantastic players to choose from.
Really hope many posters have clicked on the link by RMutt post#56. That was the third of three amazing Burnley teams produced over a 15 year period, packed full of flair and an absolute pleasure to watch.
Sean has been an excellent manager for us and his tactical astuteness and hard to beat sides have brought us much success, but I'd love for him to see that clip of the '72/'73 side to demonstrate that a team can be tough to beat whilst at the same time being wonderfully entertaining.

Dyche for me all day long.
Football is subjective of course, but Dyche plays to his strengths and works on his weaknesses against far superior sides virtually every week in the Premiership.
He is intelligent and forward thinking but unlike some on here he is a realist and sets his team out to compete week in week out.
Last season we improved on the past forays in the Prem and hopefully this season we will improve again.
we play attractive football when we are allowed and dig in when needs must.
As you can tell I am a big Dyche fan.

Potts Adamson Coyle in that order.
Re: Under Which Manager Did We Play The Best Football?
Blake and Eagles at Coventry were unplayable, fantastic stuff to watch. The Arsenal game mentioned was the best performance I have seen and we didn't even win. Fast paced, attacking, fluid, creative an absolute joy to watch until we went away from home in the PL. Coyle had far less resources than Dyche, id have liked to have seen Coyles team with Heaton, Ward, Keane, Mee and Defour. The 2nd leg against Spurs at home, incredible.jlup1980 wrote:In my lifetime it has to be Mullen and Coyle.

While Dyche has been great for us, I and many other Burnley fans don't enjoy watching efficient defensive longball football. If I liked Dyches football id be a hypocrite because Iv never liked any longball team or manager.

Re: Under Which Manager Did We Play The Best Football?
In my time watching Burnley, I'd say Ternent in the season we didn't quite go up, Coyle in the season we did go up, and Dyche the first time we went up, all got us playing a very similar brand of football which I'd class as the best of my time watching Burnley.
For all people go on about the style of Coyle and the style of Dyche, in those seasons as in that one under Ternent, our style was to play high-tempo, dynamic football, which even it wasn't exactly carpet football, involved moving the ball quickly with some lovely team interplay when we had the ball, and being tenacious when out of possession.

Re: Under Which Manager Did We Play The Best Football?
I can't join the Coyle - fest. Football to me is a complete sport - defence is as important as attack, scheming in midfield is as exciting as tricky wing play. Coyle's team occasionally shone but to be honest so did Laws' when we went down, and even john Bond has his moments. To praise any manager for good football I need to feel confident that his team aren't going to let us down. Jimmy Adamson's team of the 70s would never have lost 5 on the bounce so abjectly as we did in 2008/09 and I doubt if Dyche's would either. At the moment Dyche has built a strong foundation - maybe the best I can remember but Adamson's team in the 1970s had flair on top of that efficiency. So Adamson for me. (I'm too young to remember the 1960 side).wooooosh wrote:Cole....simples

Re: Under Which Manager Did We Play The Best Football?
Adamson's team of the '70's were superb to watch, but for sheer entertainment value the Harry Potts team that won the title in '59/'60 was the best of the lot. Strangely though that side didn't peak until the early part of the '61/'62 season. In September of '61 we played seven league games, three at home and four away. Won them all scoring 27 goals in the process.
Two of those games, over the course of four days Saturday and Tuesday we played away at Birmingham and away again at Leicester, winning both of them 6-2 in two of the finest performances you could ever wish to see. The only comparable performance at that time was Real Madrid winning 7-3 in the European Cup Final. Seriously, we were that good.
I doubt we will ever reproduce results and performances to equal September'61 under Harry Potts.

Because it's a different game now, in terms of players and tactics.
Re: Under Which Manager Did We Play The Best Football?
Dyche's team that won promotion three years ago played some very good stuff. The Wigan goal in the promotion decider was probably the best - an eight man move, and seven of the players had only one touch - but there was a lot of good stuff.

Watching the Clarets under Jimmy Mullen in the 91/92 season was very special. I only missed one game that season (Maidstone away) and you truly felt part of something special. Great days. Of course the team now, quality wise, are far superior, but being 18 yrs old, watching your heroes and knowing that the club was on its way back was amazing.
p.s. thought we played some lovely stuff in our first promotion with Dyche. I`d like to see us find that balance again.

Jimmy Adamson for those few golden years before the key parts were sold (,or in Frank's case injured)
There wasn't a side in this country at that time they couldn't have beaten.
Just class.

Adamson for me. The best football I have seen was in the days of Casper, Dobson, and James.
Mullens style was attractive but at a much lower level.
Coyle was just lucky to have some decent players at his disposal who gelled into a very good team IMHO

Some good games under several of our managers, though "best football" can only be measured by the best results. Sean Dyche, 2016/17 season is the best in recent times.

The football I most enjoyed for shear exuberance was John Bond's at Turf Moor, first half of that season.
For technical style it was Brian Miller's team with Dobbo as sweeper, Division 3 again.

Re: Under Which Manager Did We Play The Best Football?
The question asked about the "best football" ...
So in my time (since April1973) it has to be Jimmy Adamson - no contest by definition they were the best side statistically and did play some good attractive stuff.
I haven't forgotten the bleak years where I saw every home game on a ten year unbroken run but the style of play really does not compare.

It's a difficult one but I like winning so I will say Dyche for me. That first half against forest was the single best performance I have ever seen from any side at a live match, and ive seen the classico! That isn't an exaggeration either. It was laughable how ridiculously good we were in that first half.

Think it would have to be Brian Miller for me simply because the 1981-2 season with Trevor Steven controlling midfield and making the game look ridiculously simple and players like Andy Wharton playing crazy gang gung ho football, that was a marvellous season to watch, although of course in pure footballing terms way behind the Potts and Adamson era.

Re: Under Which Manager Did We Play The Best Football?
I enjoyed 81-2 but the season and indeed promotion saw a lot of close games where defence rather than gung ho anything won the day ... we were solid ... very solid and played some nice stuff after Christmas ... that side struggled for goals a problem that was never addressed and hence we were relegated twelve months later.
