Under Which Manager Did We Play The Best Football?

Given the obvious unhappiness of some posters on here with SDs style/approach
to the game, just wondered which boss got the team playing the best footie.
Not neccessarily the most successful.

I only just about caught the back end of Harry Potts tenure so can't really say about that.
Thought Cotterill didnt really get the credit he was due, and though it sticks in
my throat, horse face played some good stuff.

Who else?

There's no doubt that bearing in mind the resources available to him which presumably were fairly meagre,
Jimmy got some great performances out of his teams.

Great times.

Attacking wise in last 30 yrs Coyle.

That team clicked well when they were on it.

Some of the forward passing play was real quality.

But I'd take premier league survival for at least another 8 seasons before I whine about passing football.

Got to be coyle! I loved Jimmy Mullen my first season was the championship winning team. But that was more a level playing field.I remember not long before coyle left we played arsenal at home, fabregas was sensational for about 20 mins and went off injured. After that we played the best game of football I have ever seen at the turf,we didn't even win the game but we was outstanding I remember thinking wow Is this something special

Depends what you consider best football. Is it style or results based? Certainly a few going for Mullen but it was very basic long ball football getting the ball up to the quick wide men.

Coyle's style was also to get the ball up quickly but with a different philosophy which was undoubtedly attractive to watch.

Then you had the slow motion stuff from Howe which bored me rigid. Pass and move without the move I called it.

Harry Potts was from a different era but he was very attack minded. Adamson's team for around three years played some wonderful football. When Casper was fit, playing alongside the likes of Dobbo & Taffy it was a joy to watch.

Yes..the 2013-14 promotion season was fantastic for me in that we had some genuine quality and flair, notably through Ings and Trippier, which was embedded within "the framework". The first half demolition of Forest at the Turf was one of the finest hours but there were many other great performances that brilliant season. I remember thinking how fantastic it was to watch us and recognise, spread out on the pitch before us, the impact of the coaching the players were receiving.
This is why Dyche is, imo, a great manager.......he manages to get the team to operate a disciplined framework first and foremost, but tries to add flair and opportunity-creation to the best of the abilities of the players on the pitch. As we become more established he is adding more Premier League quality and we are evolving.
Under Coyle there were some terrific performances but there was also more inconsistency.

I liked Stan's team when we had David Johnson in there.
Coyle's brand of football was about the best I've seen from a Burnley team since Adamson's in the seventies.

First Burnley game was in the mid-90's. Can't comment on the squad's style of play but I don't half remember watching Glen Little bomb up the wing. That was a sight to behold as a kid.

+1 to Coyle in my lifetime.

Dyche for me. Our two automatic promotions to the Top Flight, have been unreal for me, brought up on tales of the '73 Second Division Title side.
The first one was out of the blue and featured the best front two I have ever seen playing together for Burnley; 40+ goals between them that term speaks for itself. I still maintain that the biggest single factor in our immediate relegation was Sam Vokes' injury, robbing is of being able to see them both have a proper tilt at the Prem.
The second was just amazing. There was a feeling about that Team. It was not always pretty to watch, but they just knew how to get a result. The 23 match unbeaten last half of the Season will probably never be matched again by a Burnley team in my lifetime.
The last three matches(PNE away, QPR at home, and Chsrlton away) reminded me of the Coyle Play-Offs. We knew what we had to do and we went and did it, without conceding a single goal.
We were like a machine.

Was it during that time when we beat Forest 3-1 but in the first half an hour we looked like a top La Liga Team playing St Ted's under 13's?

I can't go back as far as some posters, but Coyle's promotion season has to be the best football I've seen us play.

Dyche's first promotion side with Trippier and Ings was pretty special though. He gets flak for his football, some of it justified at times, but he had us playing some attractive stuff all the way through 2013/14. Barnes' goal against Wigan at home was a beauty of a goal.

Felt like the crowd were celebrating 1-2 touches before it went in the net. Unreal!

Harry Potts: Allan Brown: Jimmy Adamson were the best for me and you have to bear in mind that the team played some good stuff on mudheaps of pitches, unlike today's bowling green surfaces.

Under Stan when Weller, Little and Blake were combining down the right was something special.

The first promotion season under Dyche was good to watch with the high pressing tactics.

Promotion season under Coyle. First promotion season under Dyche. First half of Stans season before Little and Moore got injured followed by the Champions season under Mullen.

The season under Coyle was extra special coming after the turgid stuff in Cotterills last 18 months.
It felt like that excitement wasn't possible again.

Depends how you define "best football". Most attractive that i remember was under Coyle. The best in relation to our expectations was under Cotterill. The most effective at winning matches is under Dyche ahead of Ternant purely because of their relative opponents.

I'd say that third definition is the closest there is to a true meaning of "best football" so i'd say Dyche.

Dyche, some of the games were great during promotion seasons, taking total control in key games when you could just tell we were going to win.

Adamson just shades it from Dyche.

Although Adamson did have the advantage of having Dobbo, Collins, Thomas, James and Casper. 8-)

It was only short term, but we played some decent stuff under Heath, especially in contrast to the
"up and at 'em" style of Mullen.

Other than that, Coyle for me closely followed by Martin Buchan.

In the cup Brian Miller / Frank Casper - unstoppable for so long.
League has to be Coyne but Miller's third division promotion team were amazing to watch.

edit - Hah Hah I've managed to forget Coyle to such an extent I wrote the wrong name :-D

I look at this slightly differently and rather than simply which manager, which season I would say is more what sticks in my mind (or which half a season, as I will explain in a moment).

08/09 under Coyle, I would suggest, for most people my age and younger (I am 30) was without doubt the most consistently attractive team to watch. Expansive, incisive and at times deadly attacking football with superb flair from Blake, Eagles and Elliott backed up by raw physical power from Thompson and the pace of Paterson. A really fabulous mix, BUT defensively pretty terrible.

However, I am going to say the first half of the 01/02 season under Ternent was the most exciting half season I can remember in terms of the football we played. Glen Little at the height of his powers was just about the best player I have ever seen play for Burnley and this was him at his absolute peak of his powers. However, the fact we also had another winger on the left hand side (Alan Moore) who was playing at an almost equal level for those months is what made us so mouthwatering. Everything went down the wings with Weller and Little being exceptional down the right, and Moore (and, to a lesser degree) Briscoe down the left. Superb to watch, and the Taylor/Moore duo giving us pace and heading power up front. I loved that half a season so much, the performance away at Bradford exemplified the sheer excitement that team offered. Hell, we even had a centre back who did 60 yard mazy runs in Gnohere.

Lets just forget what happened at Maine Road onwards and remember what went before...

Harry Potts, Burnley 5 - 1 Leeds Utd, 1969. How can this not be the best football? (Leeds were champions that season).

Some good games under several of our managers, though "best football" can only be measured by the best results. Sean Dyche, 2016/17 season is the best in recent times.

We have been blessed to be honest.

Mullen by a mile for me. Most enjoyable all round. Especially given where we had come from and where we could have ended up. Everything about the Mullen era for me was enjoyable.

Then after him it has to be Dyche. We were exciting under Coyle at times but we were awful at the back. Best football is winning football for me but Dyche doesn't sacrifice the entertainment, he is just more pragmatic - which is what we need, especially in the prem.

Defending can be as exciting as attacking and we defend for our lives in this league when we are winning and more often than not we do it well.

But also going forwards we can be exciting. Defours goal against Hull, the performance against Liverpool. Palace away, Bournemouth, Everton and Palace at home - all great games, performances and / or wins. We cant play completely attacking for 90 mins in this league.

But looking at him in the championship we battered a lot of good teams. Derby twice, that game against forest was something else, Wigan who had just come down, QPR who were big favourites. Then against other teams like Brentford, MK Dons away we were amazing to watch. And not forgetting consistently beating Rovers. Dyche defends well and wins well.

In the championship we have had 3 strikers who have scored 20+ under Dyche - Ings, Vokes and Gray. How can that not be good to watch? I think people are spoiled with too much TV Footbal these days!

Remember your past, and more importantly, please learn how to sing at a proper cadence. For inspiration, please watch the 4th division Champions VHS. It's not difficult......
