3rd Division Rovers...
You can call the various Divisions what you want, to please the marketing people, but it's still 3rd Division !!
They kick off away at Roots Hall, home of Southend Utd... how do you think they'll get on over the Season ?? They're 4/1ish at every Bookmaker to win the title, and Mowbrey seemed to have bought a semblence of order, with some good signings for that level.... Where do you think they'll finish ??

Depending on their other transfer business they should be around the play-offs.

They are well fancied and all the pundits have them down for a first time return.Although personally I think top half of the table is a certainty they may find it a struggle to get a play off spot time will tell about their new players seem to be lower championship cast offs to me and every team will be looking at them as a big scalp similar to us in the 4th division days

Wherever they finish, it will be below us, I find that a very comforting thought.

Seventh. On the basis I don't think they'll be bad enough to get relegated, I hope they have a relatively successful season which sorely tests the loyalty of the fans and encourages Venkys to retain ownership. In short I'd like them to flirt with the play-offs and either miss out on the last day or get beaten in the semi-finals.
In my dreams they get relegated again on the last day of the season.

At the time of going to press I'd have them top 7. However with the pantomime that is Deadwood, by tomorrow it could be Bottom 7
They've got some tough times to come over the season, but if they can protect the playing staff from the horror show I think they'll around the play offs

Re: 3rd Division Rovers...
A glance at the popular Rovers messageboard will show that many are expecting this season to be a cakewalk...and others grudgingly prepared to settle for second place. Some of the easily pleased faction are even prepared to accept promotion via the play offs.
Others feel that the problem may prove to be that of being such a massive scalp, providing great motivation for the minnows and rendering every Rovers game a cup final.
Crowds are now expected to flood back to the fold as they ride the crest of the promotion wave.
One or two carpers around who feel it may not prove quite so simple, but the general mood is upbeat and expected to develop into general euphoria after the first few games.

Re: 3rd Division Rovers...
It certainly won't be a cakewalk, Sheffield United are arguably a bigger club than Rovers and it took them 7 years to escape this division, added to the off-field distractions, a few losses at the start of the season and they will soon be calling for TM head.

Re: 3rd Division Rovers...
Leeds were stuck in there for a while too weren't they?
Biggest club that leagues seen ever of course.
I think Saints and Bournemouth only got out with some extra financial help.
Portsmouth just passed on through to league 2.

Think they will be in for a rough ride, all expectations of a quick return will be dashed, mid table i should think, relegation would be lovely, but dont think that will happen unfortunately, we can all dream though lol.

With a bit of luck the league will enforce a wage cap on them too, I hadn't thought of that.

Re: 3rd Division Rovers...
Honestly, I didn't think they were that bad to go down last year, but luckily Agent Coyle did his duty and Mombray couldn't quite save them.
They managed to jettison some players in the offseason and picked up a few decent ones, but they are woefully short up front, with only Danny Graham.
Its like Venkys have finally started making some good decisions but it maybe too little too late. 100+ million in debt, voluntary layoffs of staff(which will probably lead to involuntary layoffs if no one takes them up on their offer), and other clubs wanting to get to poach their remaining good players on the cheap (Lenihan and Mulgrew), I don't know if it is a hole they can climb out of, at least anytime soon.

I don't see how that would work - players are already under contract; the league can't make them reduce their wages, and they couldn't make them sell them or cancel their contracts of no other club was willing to take them.Sidney1st wrote:With a bit of luck the league will enforce a wage cap on them too, I hadn't thought of that.

Bolton's new enforced wage cap is for new signings only and its £4500k a weekTheFamilyCat wrote:I don't see how that would work - players are already under contract; the league can't make them reduce their wages, and they couldn't make them sell them or cancel their contracts of no other club was willing to take them.
To tackle their debt, or have a chance of it, Rovers should be offering similar money or less to new signings.

Between 8th and 14th they will have enough to stay up comfortably so long as they keep Mowbray but there are some decent sides in that league who know what its all about at that level. Bradford Fleetwood Southend Scunthorpe will all be there or thereabouts again at the top, with Rochdale Oxford and the three who came straight up from L2 Portsmouth Plymouth Doncaster also in the mix, add the big scalp mentality many teams will have against them and Rovers will have their work cut out I can't see them walking it as many of the morons from down the road think.

The possibility of a cap on new signings may explain why they were getting their business done early in the window. Not daft them Venky's.Sidney1st wrote:Bolton's new enforced wage cap is for new signings only and its £4500k a week

If they don't get promoted this season it will be interesting to se how they deal with the financial ramifications - likely to overspend this season and go into transfer embargo as it is

The equivalent punishment for a League One club is £1,300 per week.
Best of luck with that Blackburn.

The three promoted sides all have momentum as well and are used to winning, Portsmouth i fancy strongly to win the division, Fleetwood should be strong hopefully Aiden can help them to a double over Rovers , Bradford would be my tip to come through the play-offs.FulledgeClaret wrote:Between 8th and 14th they will have enough to stay up comfortably so long as they keep Mowbray but there are some decent sides in that league who know what its all about at that level. Re: 3rd Division Rovers...
You could be right about Bradford will it be third time lucky for them to go up via play offs at least there will be no Millwall who have beaten them in the playoffs the last two seasons. I think they might just scrape top 2 this time and go straight up with Scunthorpe. Rochdale Fleetwood Oxford and Portsmouth for the play offs.tiger76 wrote:The three promoted sides all have momentum as well and are used to winning, Portsmouth i fancy strongly to win the division, Fleetwood should be strong hopefully Aiden can help them to a double over Rovers , Bradford would be my tip to come through the play-offs.

So it was never about Venkys then.
Re: 3rd Division Rovers...
Not totally. It was about venkys making poor choices. They make good choices and I've no problem with them. They are billionaires and want their money back. Sooner or later they'll realise the only way they can achieve that is to back the manager, spend a little and get us back into the premier league.FulledgeClaret wrote:So it was never about Venkys then.

Oh the irony. we have been pilloried by you lot down the years for gates of 3000 and less in Division 4, and now you spout that you're not going back until they start winning?? What's the difference? Bad management from the board room downwards cost us greatly all those years ago. No difference.Saxoman wrote:If we start winning and playing good football I'll go back..
Still, Liverpool have spent some £££££. That should give you something to change out of your Alan Shearer Y-fronts for.

I'm sure the support staff, the normal people, who've been asked to take voluntary redundancy are not in agreement with you about not being affected and an epic fail.
You get a years grace I suspect where your wage bill can't exceed 75% of clubs income.
If you fail to get promoted and your finances are a mess then the league can enforce a wage cap on new players of less than £2k a week each...
Its even lower in league 2.
That's the reality of the situation, be smug all you like about not being affected, but e club is and its the people that don't deserve it that are being harmed the most.
