Kevin Long signs new 3 year deal
He's going to be here forever.
Re: ARTICLE: Kevin Long extends Turf Moor stay
He must be due a testimonial in a couple of seasons.

Just thought that, he will be due a testimonial by the time it gets to the end of his new deal

I just wonder if after he's played a few games this season, and it's looking like there's a good chance he might, if people will be quite as positive as some are about him currently.
Always had him down as a League One / Lower end Championship player but, hey, good luck to the bloke. We might need it,

Re: ARTICLE: Kevin Long extends Turf Moor stay
I wonder what the record is for the fewest appearances of a player that has earned a testimonial.
I'm not sure how happy I am that he's been given a new contract. I've not seen enough of him to decide either way, if he's good enough to be relied on should an extended stint in the team be required.
It's probably bloody difficult to find a player prepared to play fourth fiddle and for so long too. Good luck to the lad.

I think his progression is worthy of a new contract. An underrated player by some on here.

Since he is now our longest serving player, I think we should rename the James Hargreaves stand in his honour, let's call it the Longsi....Oh hang on a minute.

He's still playing fourth fiddle now that Charlie Taylor is a centre back.

I think this and the Taylor comments from SD has answered the question if we'll replace Keane with a new signing

I still don't think that's the case. Time will tell.

It's virtually guaranteed it won't be the case and it's just plain daft to come to that conclusion.

Seriously, though, I think we've got to go back to the 60s to find a player with so many years service to Burnley that has played so few games. In the days of the Central League, this sort of thing was more common as players carved out successful reserve team careers.

Congratulations Kevin. Personally feel he is underrated by a lot of people. Was highly thought of when he was at Barnsley and has done enough to get contracts of all the managers who have had him. Looks strong and physically dominating when I have seen him play even if he isn't the most cultured CB ever (but then neither is Ben Mee and Neither were Steve Caldwell, Michael Duff or John Pender to name but 3 who did very good jobs for us).

For millions of pounds over a career? Not a bad earner if you ask me. 10 grand a week to keep fit? Piece of pi.ss.DCWat wrote:I wonder what the record is for the fewest appearances of a player that has earned a testimonial.

No denying it's a good earner, but I'd think that for the vast majority, playing first team football is the aim and anything less would lead to itchy feet.cricketfieldclarets wrote:For millions of pounds over a career? Not a bad earner if you ask me. 10 grand a week to keep fit? Piece of pi.ss.

Re: ARTICLE: Kevin Long extends Turf Moor stay
I certainly don't think he's as bad as people on here make out, and it shows that SD has a lot of faith in him.
Certainly doesn't guarantee that if we do sign another CB, he will be fighting with three other CBs

Most of the players we rarely see play receive nothing but unearned accolades, why is it so different where Kevin Long is concerned?
Re: ARTICLE: Kevin Long extends Turf Moor stay
He's 27
If he was good enough he would have been a regular before now
Watched him at club and international level
No where near the standard required in the premier league.

Re: ARTICLE: Kevin Long extends Turf Moor stay
But the manager of the club (who has made very few bad calls) doesn't agree.
He sees him all the time, and i guess he's seeing what he wants from him, hence the new contract.

The 10k/week is the reason SD must see summat in him. That money could be the difference between a bench player and a starter. Good luck, Kev.cricketfieldclarets wrote:For millions of pounds over a career? Not a bad earner if you ask me. 10 grand a week to keep fit? Piece of pi.ss.

Not sure where this idea that a player who has made 25 appearences for us in nearly ten years is underrated.

Re: ARTICLE: Kevin Long extends Turf Moor stay
I think the fact that he has been given a 3 year deal demonstrates that the gaffer and the club have seen enough to convince them that Kevin can play an ongoing part in the clubs progression. It's hard to say what standard he is currently at, because nobody outside of the club has seen enough of him to make a qualified judgement. It would be nice if more people had more confidence in the ability of the back room staff to make informed player assessments, instead of automatically whipping out the pessamism brush and blindly painting away at the first available opportunity.
His playing time hasn't been helped by the clubs progression. Two years ago he needed to be a quality championship player to book a place in the first team. So he develops and he improves in order to reach that standard and all of a sudden we are in the premiership. Now he has to meet the requirements of being a premiership standard player to secure a regular first team slot. It's like the bar keeps moving upwards, he improves and the standard of player we need increases.
His loan spells haven't helped a lot in terms of giving him consistent playing time to demonstrate his talent. The emergency MK Dons loan didn't give him a great opportunity to establish himself and his previous loan to Barnsley was only a short term loan. A full season loan, with the strict guarantee of plenty of playing time, at a Championship club like Barnsley would have been ideal.
As it stands I'm happy to hear that he has signed up with us for another 3 years. If the club has made the decision to offer him a lengthy contract it's definitely because he has earned it and proved himself worthy of it in their eyes. You don't go around handing out 3 year contracts to players just because they contribute to the craic and make a good brew.
Well done Kev! really good to have you onboard and signed up for another 3 years, onwards and upwards

Dyche clearly sees something in him, so much so he put him in his first burnley 11. I think he's a good player, right attitude, good age for a CB, obviously now a full international, great that he's singed another deal!

He's had to sit behind some very good defenders in his time with us and when it looked like he was going to possibly get a chance he managed to get himself injured. Obviously all his managers have seen enough in him to offer him contract extensions and keep him at the club. The fact that most on here think he is league 1 at best when he is an international, has played well in the premiership and especially at championship level, says to me that he is definitely underrated.cricketfieldclarets wrote:Not sure where this idea that a player who has made 25 appearances for us in nearly ten years is underrated.

I look at him as a unknown talent,He did not really tick with tarkowski towards the end of last season, but in all fairness he could fit in with Ben me,Let's give the lad e chance. When Ben me moved to CB we did not know how it would turn out look now probably better all round than Keene? Who knows?

Which of his 4 appearances were his best or worst?
21 appearances in the championship for us and 2 for MK Dons..
As for being an international, there are international players in the championship and league 1...
7 yrs of being at the club would say he's not underrated, he's just not good enough to become first choice.
He's never going to become first choice unless there's a number of major injuries quite simply and he's happy with that.
As for someone else's comments about him having to contend with reaching certain levels required to play in the championship and then trying to reach PL standards, other players have had to do the same and managed it fairly well, others who didn't reach the standard's required have been moved on...
