Andre Gray new contract
The opinion of Gray on here, on social media and in the stands seems strangeley mixed. For a player who has scored so many goals to get us up and keep us up i cant understand it.
With his contract up in summer whats the consensus on here if you had the simple choice of keeping him or selling him?
Straightforward - would you rather we give him a new contract or sell?
Id say new contract for sure. Unsure who we could replace him with who offers what he does.

We can only offer him a new contract and not 'give' him one.
We've offered him one.

You can lead a donkey to water........
Andre obviously isn't happy at the moment with what we've offered him. Sad for us Claret fans, but he's in his rights to ask for what he thinks he's worth. Not being on the inside, we don't know whether the offer was a good one or not. Just have faith that SD and the board know what they are doing.

Re: Andre Gray new contract
Want him or not, if he was prepared to sign a new contract, it'd be a complete no brainer.
Wouldn't the more appropriate question be, keep or sell now, with a contract presumably already being on the table?

I like Gray and hope he stays, but the only other centre-forward that I can recall who headed the ball as little as he does was Gorgeous Gus!

Keep him until Jan and hopefully get some goals out of him to help the club. Then sell so we get some financial reward and he can go and chase his 80 or 100k off some mug of a club. Everyone's happy.

We don't have to sell him to make a do.
Re: Andre Gray new contract
No, we probably don't have to sell, but we aren't so well off that 20 million wouldn't be considered for a player that may want away.Bin Ont Turf wrote:But we aren't going to sell him now, last year of contract or not.

The Assombalonga bid was a bit strange though - i suppose it's possible that we were in for him thinking that Gray may be on his way. Maybe that's changed, maybe something has been agreed.

Selling Gray in this window would be suicide.

That would depend on who we brought in, but it'd certainly be a hefty gamble.

Re: Andre Gray new contract
He must honour his contract if we don't want to sell-simple as
Forget what his transfer would generate in money, he currently costs us nothing. His goals got us promoted without doubt, and his goals in the PL kept us up. WE are better keeping him and letting him go for nothing in May, He will be in the shop window and that will drive him to play well.

Mind-boggingly - some people don't rate him. But when he leaves it'll definitely be to a bigger club than us and possibly on to England. He can be that good.

Re: Andre Gray new contract
I would have thought it was fairly obvious what Andre is doing, and he's perfectly entitled to that.
I think he's a premier league player, and so does he, and he thinks that he can get a much bigger contract if he moves at the end of his contract.
Its a shame, and I'm still hopeful that we can get him to sign a new one as we'd miss him.

Re: Andre Gray new contract
I don't think Gray is unhappy, as some have suggested. I think it's more likely that he never really intended to stay here longer than 3 seasons. Whether we like it or not, we're a stepping stone for ambitious young players, and to be honest, we've done well out if it.
Even if the club did want to 'cash in' on Gray this summer or in January, we can't force him to sign a contract with anyone. There's a good chance that he will just see his contract out and leave for nothing next summer.
Wenger made a good point about Sanchez the other day. He predicts that players running down their contracts and taking big signing fees will soon be the new norm. Why should Sanchez allow Arsenal to receive £60 million+ for his sale, when he could personally receieve that as a signing fee when he's a free agent?
The situation with Gray will probably be similar, albeit on a smaller scale. West Ham might be prepared to pay Burnley £15 million for him now, but next summer they might be prepared to pay Andre Gray a £10 million signing fee if he's a free agent. If there are several clubs after him, there will be a bidding war which will benefit Andre personally.

I was only using West Ham as a hypothetical example, but you get my drift.
Re: Andre Gray new contract
It's been mentioned several times already on multiple threads but I shall repeat: If Andre wants his big, mega deal next year (remember nobody has been interested in him this summer) then he will have to knuckle down and have the season of his life.
Win, win in this scenario.

Re: Andre Gray new contract
Offer him a decent pay rise and keep him as long as possible.
9 goals is a decent return for someone's first effort at the PL, Vokes got 1 more in his first full season and he's had lots of praise on here in comparison.

Re: Andre Gray new contract
Disagree with this. Based on the fact we get nothing for him next summer if we got £15m now you could for example blow £10m on a loan fee plus wages of a top quality striker and still be £5m better off.Bin Ont Turf wrote:Selling Gray in this window would be suicide.
Poor first touch or not.
Also if Dyche plays 4-5-1 Gray will be on the bench so its not like he is even our key striker nevermind one of our key players.
Unfortunately the ball is in Grays court and looks like he'll play out his contract which will make him much more attractive to better clubs to take a punt on next year and allow him to get a massive signing on fee and wage.

Re: Andre Gray new contract
Who would you loan in then?
People call Negrado a top striker and he's on £100k a week, but clearly needs top service.
Gray also needs better service.
Both scored 9 league goals last season, which club had the better deal?

Re: Andre Gray new contract
That wouldn't happen. We'd probably sell Gray for £15m and then just offer Chris Long a 3 year contract.Devils_Advocate wrote:if we got £15m now you could for example blow £10m on a loan fee plus wages of a top quality striker and still be £5m better off.
And that would still be good enough in the eyes of some posters on here.

Re: Andre Gray new contract
Not sure who i would loan in Sid and how would i know but I think the experts at our club who do this for a living could get a better player than Gray for one season on a £10m budget.
Ultimately turning down a decent offer for Gray would be valuing him at £200k+ per week and if you dont think our club could get better value than that in this summers transfer market you have little faith in our club

You think we can replace Gray for 10m? Am I reading that correctly? 10m is absolute peanuts, he cost almost that in the Championship! (And wages on top.) Not a chance you'll improve upon Gray on a 10m budget.Devils_Advocate wrote:Not sure who i would loan in Sid and how would i know but I think the experts at our club who do this for a living could get a better player than Gray for one season on a £10m budget.

The majority of the squad have spent the season together in the PL and benefitted from the experience.
This time round Gray will have a better idea of what he needs to do and so will our midfielders in regards to getting the ball to him.
If we bin him off now and sign the wrong player to replace him then we will sink...

Lazy player for me, imo can only score one way " if he's running on to the ball in the right hand channel " certainly got a lot to learn before he pulls on an England shirt !

I find it very unlikely that there would be a better player than Gray available for a season long loan.

Lazy? Did you see him last season? He spent most of his time chasing aimless punts up field, trying to muster something out of pretty much nothing. Your comment about him only scoring one way is inaccurate too but even if it wasn't, Gary Lineker only scored one way...alwaysaclaret wrote:Lazy player for me, imo can only score one way " if he's running on to the ball in the right hand channel " certainly got a lot to learn before he pulls on an England shirt !
He'd be almost impossible for us to replace at the moment - especially for under something like thirty million.

Re: Andre Gray new contract
Gray has managed to do last season what I thought he couldn't. He improved his overall play. Very happy to have been proved wrong. Gray does well, Burnley do well.
Not entirely convinced he's happy here. Dunno why, just doesn't seem like he belongs, or wants to. He's a pro footballer though, so maybe I should remember that these players aren't actually fans and don't really give a shiney one.
I'd like to see more from him. I think he could make it in the PL.
