If Gray goes who would you like in
I could name plenty abroad but its never in a million years going to happen. So its almost certain to be a top club reject / youngster or a lower league prospect.
On that basis id go with any of:
Wilfried Bony loan or permanent if City will pay some of his wages
Shane Long permanent
Dominic Solanke on loan
Benik Afobe permanent

Would take Bony or Afobe.
Long might do a stop gap job until someone better was available
Would like Ings if he is capable of being as good as he was

Shane Long, possibly.
Some unknown 'Michu style' European signing who we sign for a steal and they go on to fire us up the league. We then sell them for £30m next year.

We could pretty much cherry pick anyone we fancied from Sparta Prague now they are out of the Europa League. Sural could be worth a punt for a startDarthlaw wrote:Ings on loan.

Beaten by my favourite serb team. Red Star. With goals by Richmond Boakye. Absolute beast who is on fire. He averages a goal a game for them. Ex Juve. Ghana international. Not saying he is good enough for the prem but might have been worth a gamble on a free as backup.ZizkovClaret wrote:We could pretty much cherry pick anyone we fancied from Sparta Prague now they are out of the Europa League. Take Zapata on loan with a view to a permanent deal.
Bring in a young up coming forward. Don't know who though! Maybe a Che Adams or something.

I think Shane Long would be a good fit. Alternatively Dwight Gayle at Newcastle as I doubt him seeing much action this season at St James.

No idea.
He had a 1 in 3 record for us last season and that won't be easy to replace within our wage structure, particularly given our clear preference for buying known quantities from within the UK.

Re: If Gray goes who would you like in
Shane Long if he was dirt cheap yes please simply for the pace. Doesn't tend to hit double figures so a goal scorer is needed.
Realistically it's hard to throw some names out : Danny Ings on loan would be great if he was anything close to his old self.
Solanke - will be ahead on Ings at Anfield so no.
Callum Wilson - not a prayer but is a better version of Gray in my eyes.
Unrealistic : Moussa Dembele from Celtic - Stepping Stone move only possibilty, test the water at £20m but can't see that at all.

Wages seem to be our major stumbling block. If we are to replace Gray with a like for like we are going to have to bite the bullet and break our wage structure

Re: If Gray goes who would you like in
We need to break our wage structure anyway. Someone on £60k a week is £3.1m a year. Someone on £35k per week (as we pay now) is £1.8m. The difference between the two is peanuts compared to our profits and income.

Long is an obvious one for pace.
However, if it's Watford we're talking about, let's start talking 'Troy Deeney' again. He's not 100% happy there and he loves Dyche.

We paid £9m for him.
Supposedly Brentford have 20% on any profit therefore they would redeem £1.8m from the deal if it is £18m.
So we return a £7m profit and £16m back to the coffers.
We MUST spend it wisely.
Danny Ings and Shane Long for me too.
We need pace, nouse and some of the X factor that Danny Ings has in abundance.

Re: If Gray goes who would you like in
Vokes - a proper 4-5-1 with two wingers who can cross the ball and let Defour or Hendrick push up from midfield. Vokes scored 10 last season, get some proper crosses in half a dozen times a game and he'll double that.

I love Vokes. Probably one of my favourite Burnley players ever. But he wont score 20 goals just with a change of style.

Re: If Gray goes who would you like in
We should treat ourselves to 2 forwards, 1 permanent decent money, 1 younger up-and-coming player, lower league or loanee, both with pace and/or trickery. We've no like-for-like cover for Gray in the squad which was always a weakness, especially when he was knackered after 70 mins. So it's an important replacement to get right and it won't be easy, especially with the time it takes for players to get bedded in and used to our style of play. So lets anticipate some teething problems with the 'marquee' replacement and mitigate that risk by bringing in 2 for 1.
People will be flapping but no-one really liked Gray anyway and we'll find a better replacement who with a bit of technical ability will probably bring more to the team. Bring in 2 for 1 and it will be happy days.

As for the player we bring in, knowing that Dyche prefers British and Irish players there is a limited pool of availability.
I can't think of a realistic target that is better than Gray that fits that profile.
Re: If Gray goes who would you like in
Ings on loan, plus one of Shane Long or Troy Deeney. Happy days.

It's always reassuring to know that slip ups in grammar, spelling and mathematics won't go unnoticed on this board.

Re: If Gray goes who would you like in
Deeny would be interesting, but wages would be a stumbling block I think.
With the money we have now, you'd think we could afford to look abroad.
I just can't think of anyone in the championship at the moment.
Ings on loan and a young and up and coming striker signed as another option wouldn't be the worst, but we really do need to replace him quickly

Agree with the lack of options with strikers in thr championship. Bringing someone from abroad with our track record doesn't fill me with much confidence though!Lancasterclaret wrote:Deeny would be interesting, but wages would be a stumbling block I think.

Re: If Gray goes who would you like in
plenty of options and we do not need to limit ourselves to what we get for Gray, we can add to it, 30 million is no stretch however as many point out it will be wages which are the limiting factor. However the club do use a bonus structure so it is possible to work on a basic wage with bonuses throughout the season, bigger question is are players willing to take a gamble on joining and getting money based on performances and milestones applied. I would like to think so but some/most will not, they will want the safety of receiving a basic wage regardless of performance of the team as a whole.
Next few weeks will be interesting watching some on here meltdown
looking forward to "the club have no ambition" thread, that's always fun
