Are the free ones any good or is it better to pay for one?

For streaming? You'll most likely be having to pay.

If you want to try a free one, Browsec addon for Chrome is very good for accessing certain websites but can be slow.

I'm sure others will have a better idea for streaming.

Best to pay for one if streaming

Just signed up to Private Internet Access, it comes in the top 3 for most reviewers and they are doing a 12 month deal for $40, approx £30

It works fine with a Chrome extension, easy to switch countries / servers.

I've been using the private internet access for 4 years now and would recommend it.
Keep it to the Netherlands and all works fine

Can someone explain how you run the firestick through a VPN please? I understand and use one when on a laptop/desktop but unsure how it works with a stick

VPN allows you to watch stuff that is restricted within the area you live.

I think you use an app from the vpn provider. Alternatively you configure your router to the vpn settings so that everything is protected. I have my virgin router set to modem mode, then another router connected to it with Express VPN configured. My Fire TV box is then connected by Ethernet ( you can use wireless as well) and I pick up my wifi from the vpn router

No. And yes, paid for VPNs are way better. Usually.

Here's a great guide on buying one.

I notice that this site now has plenty of advertising for various VPNs, clearly spotted a target audience.

I tried one of the free ones identified by SM for use when viewing via their website. It was
called TunnelBear and was very good, but there was a limit on usage which was insufficient
to see you through a full game. It was a "monthly" limit and clearly not enough to last for the
number of games in a month, never mind anything else.

I have since signed up for IPVanish for 3 months at a cost of £20.22 (plus 60p non sterling transaction fee
as the price was in dollars)

It has worked brilliantly when used via SM website, but still the same problems if I try to access SM with KODI.

*** Just a word of warning, a VPN does slow down your internet speed, by about half, in my experience. If you have
sufficient speed it won't be too much of a problem, but if your speed is on the low side then it may become an issue.

There's a good chance that slow VPN speeds are down to the machine it is being used on, not the VPN. Using PIA for instance I can get 150Mbps on a proper computer (full speed virgin fibre). My low powered server can get about 40Mbps, my travel router only about 15-20 Mbps, my home router about 100Mbps (it's a more powerful router than your bog standard ISP one). All are on the same wired network.

Encrypting all that stuff on the fly is very processor intensive. If you run a VPN constantly on your phone the battery life will take a hit is the other illustration.

I use Express VPN (paid for) for SM and it works fine. They do a money back guarantee so you can try it out. Support was good when I used it (for Netflix)

A free vpn is something I would never advice anyone to go for. I use NordVPN as an option for Kodi vpn. Works well and been satisfied with all their support. Works for Netflix too getting access to region based libraries. Moreover, if you are looking for something a bit lower in price, PureVPN is a good option go for. They have amazing deals every now and then. Recently I read somewhere they are giving a 77% discount.

I know it's a bit late to reply here but I think you might as well take a look at this blog before you chose any VPN for Kodi and yes it should be a paid one in my opinion as well.

Cyberghost works well and you get a license to use across 7 different devices if you buy from their website. Cost me about £70 for 2 years. Don’t buy off AppStore though as you will be restricted to just using on IOS.
