Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
Simple enough question.
Ben wants away to a PL club in order to push for an England spot in the World Cup squad
West Brom seem to be looking elsewhere now
M'boro want £25m for him
We need another CB urgently
With the way prices are going it's actually seeming cheap right now! Or am I being delusional here?

WBA could be £25 million richer soon if Evans goes to City.
I'd certainly have a look at Gibson.

Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
He'd be a cracking signing. I just can't see Dyche wanting to pay so much for a defender.
Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
We won't pay the fee
And we won't pay the wages he will want
Gibson, Dawson, Shawcross are all way out of our league (literally)

Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
Surely he'll be off to WBA once City spent the GDP of a small african country on Evans.
Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
I wouldn't want us spending that much on a CB, it's way beyond what we need. £10M ceiling on CB, even that's over the top. Go silly with fees getting 1st/2nd choice midfielders and forwards over the line, that's where it's needed.

Staggering wages Evans is on and i thought WBA were one of the more sensible clubs.Sidney1st wrote:WBA could be £25 million richer soon if Evans goes to City.

Manchester City are ready to offer West Brom £22m for their 29-year-old captain Jonny Evans after having an £18m bid rejected. City are prepared to almost double the Northern Ireland defender's £75,000 a week wages. If Dawson is anywhere near those wages forget him,Gibson fits all the criteria young English knows the Premier League, Can't see Burnley paying silly money for a CB though, plus i guess high wage demands.

Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
Silly money?
Suppose Keane had signed a new deal with us. Would we not be over the moon about that even though the cost to us would have effectively been £25m? If we could get Gibson - a player equally highly rated by many - for what we got for Keane, and for the wages we were offering Keane on a new contract, I would view that as decent business.
Lot of "ifs" in there, but I don't think we should be put off by spending £25m on a defender, given that we've just sold one for that

Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
Gibson would be an excellent signing but as we look at the cheaper end what about Michael Dawson? Has been a good player and would be superb as cover for Tarks or Mee.

There's alwasy some funny comments on here with transfers.
People rightly want the going rate when it comes to selling our players but don't want us to pay the going rate to replace them with players of suppposed equal quality.

Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
Is the Burnley model so mature that rather than pay 10m for a defender and turn him into a 25m player, we go straight in at 25m for a replacement? I'm not so sure we're quite there yet. You could also argue that given how valuations have sord this summer, we may have been a bit premature in agreeing the fee that we did for Keano.scouseclaret wrote:Silly money?

Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
Isn't he a left-sided centre back? Mee's not going anywhere so not sure if he's what we need.
Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
Not equally highly rated by all that many. Keane has England caps, and IMO will be getting many more of them starting from the next international match; I don't remember hearing many claims that Gibson should get them instead.scouseclaret wrote:Silly money?

Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
I think I know what you're getting at but Keane signing a new deal with us isn't the same as him costing us £25M, so lets spend £25M on a defender. We don't have anything like the spending power of other clubs in this division, we need to buy as smart as we can. The way we play, the protection we give our defenders, makes competent defenders look like good defenders. The Keane money buys us a competent replacement at CB and midfielder who can make us more of a threat going forward. Not smart for a club in our position to spend £25M on a defender.scouseclaret wrote:Silly money?

Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
I am surprised no one has taken him from Boro already.
He's already knocking on the England door with Keane but without PL experience he's not going to make it.
Isn't he related to Gibson the chairman? His wage demands may be beyond us

Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
West Brom might go back in, if Evans goes to Man City they seem the only club to have a concrete interest so far. I suspect wages would be an issue more then a potential transfer fee from a burnley viewpoint.

Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
Every day of the week would i spend that money on him.
Would look at a 4 year deal and min release clause also.
Very solid defender, fits the british/Irish mould we have in the main. Still time to develop and the way money is going on tv deals, likely to see a nice return on him.
Keane with a couple of years on his contract would have been worth 35-40m imo.

Good defender and highly rated but would probably prefer us to be looking at a loan for someone like Chambers or Holding if available. wouldn't want us to spend all the Keane money on Gibson who will likely be on a fair wage at Boro.

Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
Why not? If we had re-signed Keane we would have a top class centre half, but £25m less in the bank, and many thousands of very happy Burnley fans. We spend the £25m Gibson and we are in exactly the same position. People will argue the toss over whether Gibson is as good, but as I recall last season he was vying for the England nod alongside Keane but got injured around the time Keane was called up.lucs86 wrote:I think I know what you're getting at but Keane signing a new deal with us isn't the same as him costing us £25M, so lets spend £25M on a defender. Also the market is moving - predictably - very quickly. I agree with the poster above who said we sold Keane too quickly.

Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
Gibson is expected to stay at us Boro. West Brom have bid 20m and had that turned down. Pulls has said it will be very difficult to get him away from Middlesbrough. Rumours are he will only leave for a top 6 club and for closer to 30m. We have have a net spend around 3 million so far this season, spent around 43m and sold 40m of players so are not in need of the cash. He is Captain of his hometown club which his uncle owns, which is a pretty unique situation. Also has 4 years left on his contract. If someone pays daft money and he does go the emergence of 19 year old Dael Fry who has partnered Gibson the last 2 games and also played 3 games for the ENGLAND U20 World Cup winning team might lighten the blow.iluva64 wrote:I am surprised no one has taken him from Boro already.

Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
Having 4 years on his contract puts Boro in a strong bargaining position should anyone come calling, the only viable option on that list to pay silly money is probably Man City, and they could fund the wages also, but they seem to be shopping elsewhere this summer,Boro could easily keep hold of Gibson and if they bounce back he would command an even larger fee, can't see him moving in this window.
Re: Ben Gibson- should we/shouldn't we?
Gibson is definitely better than Keane so must be worth at least 30 mil.
Well that's what Middlesbrough fans kept saying.

They can play hard ball over any fee, because he has a long-term contract,Keane sadly didn't,so we had to be realistic about his value,in the circumstances we probably got as much as we could.Commy wrote:Gibson is definitely better than Keane so must be worth at least 30 mil.

It was sarcasm. I could have put 60 mil.tiger76 wrote:They can play hard ball over any fee, because he has a long-term contract,Keane sadly didn't,so we had to be realistic about his value,in the circumstances we probably got as much as we could.

As a football fan I hope he stays with you. As a Burnley fan I would sign him for a limit of 20m as I do like him. Staying at Boro could ruin his England chances though. Tough call for the lad.Estonhills wrote:Gibson is expected to stay at us Boro. West Brom have bid 20m and had that turned down. There are still Middlesbrough fans? I thought they gave up after last season?
How can you pay so much yet get relegated.
...and then the following year charge more than 20m for a failed premier league centre back when we sold Keane for 25m.
Same age, but seemingly worth the same despite having less games and premier league experience behind him?
I hope borough fall and get sanctioned for ffp. Disgraceful how a team can spend so much yet the next season after relegation ask so much for a player.
