Told off who?

I'd be relatively happy with Gayle. The type of striker I was hoping we'd be in for.

I don't understand why Newcastle would let him leave, did he not score close to 30 goals for them last season? I know he was on fire at one point. I haven't noticed him playing for Newcastle this season, is he currently injured or just out of favour?

I hope your source isn't HITC!

I'd love it if we signed Dwight Gayle though. Only 26, scored goals for fun in the Championship last season and has a good scoring record in the PL based on minutes played.

Have leeds not been told to cough up 20 million and even then they will only sell if they get a replacement in

They seem to be disappointed with his form this season but I think they're jumping the gun - far too early and they have to give him time. He's playing in a relatively poor Newcastle team, in my opinion. A fresh start would be good for him.

If we've discounted the foreign market then I'm struggling to come up with a more realistic option that would potentially offer us something different to what we have. It won't be £20 million.

64 PL appearances for Palace and 15 goals...

He's no better or worse than anyone we already have, so I'm not sure why anyone would be excited to see us sign him.
This place is really weird sometimes.

Seems one of them strikers stuck between leagues. Looks great and Scores for fun in the Championship but looks out of his depth and Struggles in the Premier league.

Saying that, he hasn't been Dyched, so that might be the extra bit he needs to push on.

Because the goals he scored were from relatively few minutes. He was often used as a sub for palace.

the above is merely a stat and no guarantee it will be the same at the next club, our free players such as Heaton Arfield should tell us all that.

Different team tactics/managers/players have new signings playing different, I like D Gayle and think he would do well in our team and provide something slightly different but am not sure about the link and think someone would go, probably Barnes.

However it wont be long now before we know for sure what SD wants, which is what counts really.

I think we all know that what another club thinks isn't necessarily correct. We've signed loads of players over the years who were out of favour at their clubs. For whatever reason, he wasn't given a consistent run of games under Palace and the fact is that he has a very good goalscoring rate for minutes played. I don't see how that can be anything other than a positive.

Always rated Dwight Gayle.

Wanted us to be in for him before we got Gray.

Would be happy if he signed.

Would be relatively underwhelmed if we signed him and let Barnes go. Especially at the prices being thrown around about Gayle, 15-20m.

Rather us throw the money at Andone and take a gamble personally

He only started 27 games, the rest he was a sub. Not a bad record if you take that into account.

Sorry for posting this again but I do feel it's relevant:

2013/14 season he played 892 mins but got 7 goals.
2014/15 season he played 1096 mins and got 5 goals and 2 assists.
2015/16 season he played 771 mins and got 3 goals and 1 assist.

Keep in mind that players who play every game play 3000+ minutes. So even in the 2014/15 season, he still only played a 3rd of total possible minutes. That to me suggests he's very productive. The question is, can he do it on a more regular basis? I'd be very happy for us to find out even if it means a swap deal for Barnes. And that's coming from one the biggest fans/defenders of Ashley Barnes!

He's got a good record. As I said, as a realistic option he's certainly not a player we should be turning up our noses at.

More stats here...here are the goals scored by the top scorers in the Championship last season. Gayle came 2nd with the same number scored as Tammy Abraham and only 4 behind Chris Wood. The numbers in brackets indicate how many of those goals were penalties - none of the 23 goals scored by Gayle were pens. I think that's quite impressive. 5 of Wood's 27 were pens.

Chris Wood New Zealand 27 (5)
Tammy Abraham England 23 (2)
Dwight Gayle England 23 (0)
Glenn Murray England 23 (4)

87 goals in 141 starts suggests he is a natural finisher. It doesn't matter what division most were scored if you can finish, as we found with Austin. He just hasn't been given a run in the Premier for some reason. He always looked decent when he played and he is more mature now. It would be a yes from me. I sure wouldn't like him to go to Brighton. They are doing just fine firing blanks. :D

Dwight Gayle would be a very good signing.
He scores goals at any level, and is different to what we already have. He would offer another dimension to our attack.
Can't believe anyone thinks he isn't good enough, based on the fact that Palace let him go and Newcastle don't fancy him.
Jack Cork wasn't fancied at Swansea. Their cock up is our gain

A lot of credibility to this story, I hope it's true.

Haha, just seen that the first clip in the link I've posted is actually a saved penalty. But to be fair to him, he does finish it up afterwards. Perhaps he was off pen duties after that though.

He looked superb whenever I saw him last season. Obviously the PL is a step up but he's got pace and is a natural finisher which are attributes I would have thought all of our fans were crying out for.

cracking player, top scorer in the championship last year discounting penalties, quick, works hard, very good finisher who has scored goals at every level.

the ideal signing for us.

should dwell too much on palace letting him go, he was their top scorer 3 seasons in a row despite not being a regular. newcastle need the money and are likely to be playing 1 up top this season.

that said, he won't come cheap, he's still got 4 years on his contract.

Based on his goals from last season, he scores a fair mix. Some very tidy finishes as well as the standard scrappy goals. Also a headed goal and very good FK goal.

The key here is potential which he definitely has. Would be happy if we managed to get him and surprised at the same time if Newcastle let him go to a rival.

Heaton, Vokes and Arfield weren't exactly pulling up trees when we signed them and look at what they've done for us under SD.

Looks good with either foot so no pratting around trying to get it on his stronger foot. The chance Gray missed against Chelsea at home was because he tried to position himself for his right foot. Gayle would have scored that. I think someone needs to tell the boss that we have decided he would be a good signing  .

I rate Gayle from what I've seen on him on the telly.
Would be very surprised if Newcastle were willing to let him go.
Possibly a swap deal with Barnes if Newcastle are interested?
Him and Wood up front might be very interesting.

Better us than Brighton....Newcastle will look at us as a team who are getting established in the division. And who are more likely to stay up than other teams at this point in time.

Better to let us do that than sell to a direct rival like Brighton....

Pre-season Newcastle were rumored to be keen on buying Barnes.

I wonder if there might be a cash and player swap deal in the making.

A Palace fan on 606 this weekend said he would like Gayle to be offloaded as he couldn't operate as a lone striker unlike Mitrovic and Joselu.
