Awful performance

Post by Blackrod » Sun Sep 10, 2017 3:46 pm

As good as we were against West Brom and somehow lost we were awful today and very very lucky to win. We should have played 4-5-1. We couldn't get a grip of the game. We cannot play 442 with that starting line up again.

Yes results are not bad but that was not a good game and Palace were unlucky. It was obvious we had just practiced on 442 all week and were not going to change. I said on 50 mins we would still stick to it and sub Defour on 80 mins for Westwood.

50 minutes. Westwood should have been on for a striker after 30 minutes. Unbelievable management. Still I will take 3 points.

It was disappointing in the attacking sense. We dealt with most of what they threw our way minus the free header and the 1 on 1 that Pope saved. Great that we have the flexibility to switch between formations but 4-4-2 wasn't really working for us today, that's for sure.

Felt a bit like some of the games last season. Nicking a goal and then holding onto the lead, even if it's not pretty. But as you've said, we were good versus West Brom and got nothing. So a poor performance and 3 points is a nice problem to have, haha. Apart from today, I've enjoyed our performances thus far - in the PL and in the cup.

3 points against West Brom and 0 today wouldn't have been unfair. Putting Barnes on didn't really prevent Cabaye from picking space up and continued to leave us overrun in midfield - Westwood for Vokes would have been the change I'd have made but fortunately we rode it out.

I tend to agree with you but with Liverpool away next week we will be back to 4 5 1, with Vokes dropping down to the bench and I suspect Arfield or Westwood coming in

Every single game Dyche always says the thing - he looks at is the performance and if we get that right then results will follow. As unlucky as we were against WBA we were lucky today. We couldn't have complained if we lost 1-4 today

Said the same thing verbatum to my missus after about 50 minutes. Needed an extra body in midfield and my choice would have been Westwood for Vokes. Got overran in midfield the entirety of the second half. Still. A win's a win, albeit we didn't deserve it.

If we're going to be realistic, that set up was utterly dreadful.

Yes we won...god knows how...Palace should have had a hatful.

Some great defending but the rest was utter cack.

It's quite annoying that the pundits will criticise our performance today but didn't give us the praise we deserved against West Brom. Funny old game.

Brady was by far the worst player for us. Misplaced passes and poor control putting us under pressure.

It's not about the fact we got 3 points, so it doesn't matter. You can win and still learn a lot. I think we tried 4-4-2, because we were at home to a team clearly in poor form, but expect us to revert back to 4-5-1.

Not pretty at all (bloody dour at times) and a few players (particularly Brady) not on it - yet we played with some real nous in the 2nd half finding a way to get into their heads with soft free kicks and defended pretty solidly. They tried hard but lacked belief, we tried had and had it and that's why we won. All in all a Pulis done to them - that is progress in my book 7 pts from the first 4 games

The early sub restricted SD but Brady had an awful carry over from the Internationals.
On the plus side JBG was much improved and folk might get off Tarks back after an immense showing.

Sean on BBC

Burnley manager Sean Dyche: "We were resolute, that was the key. Palace were the better side today, we didn't get into our stride at all.
"They played well throughout the game. Sometimes it's just not your day. It's our worst performance of the season so far but the shape of the team, the belief in each other was on show.
"Chris Wood has made a good start and he scored a hat-trick for his country in midweek as well. He has a desire to prove himself in the Premier League, it was a great finish.
"Nick Pope made some good saves today, that will do him the world of good.
"Tom Heaton, it looks like a dislocated shoulder and if that is the case we are looking at months, not weeks."

Should have won against WBA, as a few have pointed out.
Not a great show today, but we ground it out, together with a bit of luck
because Scott Danns a plank. That's the way it goes.

Seventh in the PL. For today, it's all that matters.

We dug in and got a precious 3 points. This is the premier league and Palace were as unlucky as West Brom were lucky so it balances out. On the plus side thought our defence were exposed but immense and Woods two games two goals!UTC

Did we sit too deep because of our lack of pace at the back?

It was obvious very early that we needed another body in midfield.

Palace - poor performance three points.

Here's to more poor performances.

The Palace team switching to a back 4 rather than the 3 they have used so far this season threw our team selection out the door. Our switch to 4-4-2 was negated by their system change and then grabbing the early goal sort of put us on the back foot for the rest of the 1st half. Defour had a great game defensively but even he couldn't get the ball down and controlled. A very disjointed display passing wise with no determined effort to try and play football rather than hoofball.

I thought we played very well until we scored :D After that you always expect a reaction from the losing side for a few minutes however the few minutes lasted for the rest of the match. Great defensive performance and three points is all that matters. I think Dyche might go with five in midfield at home next time we play a team with such pace.

Being loyal only gets you the sack
451 was the team for today but he couldent drop Vokes
Crazy stuff Palace were pure shite
We made them look good
Please Mr Dyche revert back to 451 for Liverpool

That win convinced me how special the team is and how good we are.

Under the cosh throughout
Sub keeper on for his debut
Couldnt get hold of the ball as a tem

But the defence were outstanding. Clearences off the post. Bodies on the line and a fantastic save or two from pope.

Tarkowski and Lowton in particular were class.

The thing is, we clear off the line on a fairly regular basis. We block shots on a very, very regular basis. Most of that was fairly routine for us. I maintain that Dann's free header and Benteke's 1 on 1 were their 2 main chances. Still, we won so I won't argue the point too much :D

Tbh I fully agree with the OP. I was screaming for us to go 4-5-1 after 60 mins but in fairness we got the 3 points so you can't complain too much.

We are definitely a better side playing 1 up top though.

Great to get three points, but we were very lucky today. Clearly struggled with the 4-4-2 formation, one the most one sided games I have seen for a long time. Played way too deep with 10 men in our own half for most of the second. Fortunate that Palace didn't have their shooting boots on.We won't get away with that kind of performance very often.
