Marc Bolan

Post by djt2006 » Thu Sep 14, 2017 9:24 pm

Saturday will be the 40th anniversary of his death. In recognition BBC4 are showing a documentary at 9.00pm tomorrow night followed by Glam rock at the BBC.

Should be great viewing for anyone who was a teenager in the 70's.

Summing up T Rex? Cool. :)

What happened after Marc's death, did they simply disband? Did the others go on to do other things?

Bolan died in his twenties...a talented lad...T. Rex were massive at that point.

Gloria Jones was driving the car, when he was killed - the crash site [Queen's Ride, Barnes, SW London] is a Marc Bolan shrine, I came across it one day, when out walking.

'Get it On'..

I believe that was on Cilla's show not Marc.
He did a lot to support punk bands like the Damned & Gen X who he described as having a singer who was nearly as pretty as he was.

T'rextasy , played the Grand in Clitheroe a few times, absolutely amazing tribute, the nearest thing you could get to the original, apparently highly thought of by Marc's family

Marc Bolan was T Rex. The other members of his group could hardly have made a hit record.

The reason he was a good mate of Bowie was down to them both being struggling nobodies initially.
They shared the same manager as unknowns, Bowie was asked to see the manager because he "had some work for him"
when he got to the office, he was handed overalls and a paint pot and brush and told to paint the walls of a back room.when he went in there was another lad painting already, that was Bolan. They struck up a friendship from that day.

Okay, so I just don't remember him having his own tv show and didn't get the reference to Cilla Black but I still think Saxoman's comment about what happened to the rest of his group after he died was pretty stupid.

Marc used to share a house in London with James Bolam and it is said that's when he came up with Bolan.

At the time of his death His career was in a nose dive due to the explosion of Punk on to the scene.
However, I'm sure his talent would have allowed him to reinvent himself sucessfully for future generations. I often wonder what we missed.

Why stupid? It was a reasonable question to ask. Or was it because Saxo asked the question, you felt that sort of reaction was called for and would pass without comment.

My favourite was Ride a White Swan
Looking back though the lyrics of the songs were absolute rubbish and sounded like they were dreamt up in about 10 minutes.

I loved T Rex. My Mum and Dad ran a pub and when the dukebox records were changed I was given the old records. I had a great collection of all their hit 45's, minus the centres of course.

Rick Wakeman tells an interesting anecdote about Marc asking him to play a few notes on one of his recordings because he'd heard that Rick didn't have enough money at the time to pay his rent.

Actually it was on the up at the time as he'd sort of adopted the punk scene and they in turn adopted him. And as has been said, a second series of his Marc show was planned.
