You'd think the ability to control a football would be an essential requirement for a professional footballer. He looked like a non-league striker today, that's for sure. I was surprised when he came out again after HT.

Re: Andre Gray
I asked last week how long it would take the fans to turn. People thought I meant the team as a whole which given their position is unlikely for now, but it seems Gray is starting to draw some ire.
Maybe he's pulling defenders around and contributing to wins like he for us at times but fans want to see tangible results from strikers mostly in the form of goals.

Re: Andre Gray
I've never met the bloke, some on here will have, so I'm not an authority but I'll be up front, I never "took" to AG,And while he made a lot of good talk when that tweet came to light, but he seemed to be backsliding into hanging with the same crowd from his troubled days.
As for his football ability, a felt he forced us into playing a certain way, which certainly got the job done, left us a little one dimensional, I felt he lacked the ability to adapt.
That all said.... while they're some funny posts on that thread... it's worth point out that one of the most liked posts is this...
I think the level of criticism towards Gray is unfair. I get that his first touch is not that impressive but the guy has been a pivotal part of our success so far this season he works hard up front and runs in behind giving other players time on the ball.
So it seems like Watford fans are having the exact same debate we had when he was here!

75k pw for a player who couldn't trap a bag of cement. His agent didn't have a bad first touch touting him for 100k salary though.
What other player has moved and more than trebled their Salary? I doubt even Kante did that moving to Chelsea.
I bet Keane is on less at Everton.

Re: Andre Gray
Just to add a bit of balance to the usual "he's left us so he must be ****" thread...
Gray's rise from the depths of non-league to the Premier League is actually pretty special. It's probably only been done by a handful of players in my lifetime.
It's also fair to say that he has a proven ability to adapt to every additional challenge he's faced. Whatever you thought of last season, getting into double-figures in his first season in the Prem wasn't bad at all, particularly given some of the issues he had. There are bigger names than him who didn't manage that.
The season is 5 games old and he's started what? 3 or 4 games? He may prove a failure at Watford, but given his history I wouldn't be writing him off just yet.

Re: Andre Gray
Given some people on here insist on criticising at least one incumbent player it's no surprise to slag off one that's left.
From the weekly highlights I have seen (not much on MotD admittedly), it looks like Gray has settled in pretty well at Watford. They've scored a few on the counteract and he's usually been in shot, stretching defences with his running and he made one at Bournemth with a clever assist.
It looks like Watford's system suits him better than maybe ours did.
We play them soon, so we'll get a closer look then, but I'm more than suited with Wood and Wells in exchange for him, I think both will contribute and make our squad stronger overall. A long way to go yet mind.

Re: Andre Gray
It's a bit harsh to turn on AG now that he has gone.
Despite his issues, which we all know about, he still did an excellent job for us.
He still has the potential to be a great striker, sadly for him I think he had far more chance of fulfilling it at Burnley than he ever will at Watford.
18 million was brilliant business in the circumstances, and in Wood and Wells we have two players just as exciting and just as full of potential.
I'd much rather spend my energy encouraging our own, than taking the mick out of someone who's gone.

On the highlights I have seen he hasn't looked too great. I think he will score goals but his all round game is not the best. He has strenghth and some pace but his balll control is very poor. He is one dimensional but the team need to play to his strengths. He looked very hungry to improve when he came to us. After hitching up with the pop star he looked to be more interested in the celeb lifestyle and cash.
Re: Andre Gray
I don't think there's any ill feeling towards him. Was popular and well supported in his time here. Just got too big for his boots and thought he was better than he actually is.scrambledclaret wrote:Don't quite understand the ill feeling, he was a good player for us, especially in the championship and we got a good fee for him and he presumably got a pay rise. Could well prove to be good business for us. He's not doing much at Watford so far but this can happen when you put money first.

To be fair, selby is right.
He scored 9 premier league goals. The one in the cup wasn't a premier league goal.
So 9 it is.

It wouldn't be Claretsmad/UTC if someone made a perfectly fair point, but because it is slightly not correct (even though the whole post and sentiment is 100% bang on) a load of people who disagree with it (for reasons I think they will keep to themselves) to highlight that part of it.
Nine premier league goals in your first season at this level is an excellent return. Plenty of really good players don't manage that.
Hope he does well at Watford (other than when he plays against us), and he was a cracking player for us.

I said he got double figures in his first season in the Prem. He did and it was.
But, yeah, ignore the general point and have a proper anal debate about semantics.

He did well for us with obvious areas where he needed to improve. I don't want him to do well against us or any other side that have no chance of getting into a relegation scrap, which could happen to Watford.
