New Banksy mural

Post by Pstotto » Mon Sep 18, 2017 10:35 pm

I think Banksy is a prat and I don't like his work. You may have seen the free ad-space he gets in all the press (BBC at the moment) because he is a political pawn, like Emin and Lubiana Himid (Turnip Rise nominee and a judge (????????) of the Next John Moores Show in Liverpool.)

His latest works are to coincide with the Basqiat show at the Barbican. It's giving the primitives the reigns of culture as an aping of social inclusivity. His latest work shows a monster being checked over by the police. Thank God for the police.

But isn't his little girl picture holding the heart shaped balloon in shoreditch the nations favourite? So somebody likes him....though personally I don't get him,or Tracey emin. And I always make my bed....

Some of Banksy's work is very witty and funny and it's often also aesthetically pleasing. That explains his popularity.

What his work isn't is cutting edge, artistically talented, subversive, "challenging" or worthy of the levels of hype and attention it receives. It's also increasingly mainstream, cliched and old hat.

I personally think he'd do well to retire otherwise he'll become regarded as part of the establishment (which he actually already is) and when that becomes the consensus on him his reputation will be irredeemably trashed.

But I still like some of his spray stencils. It's an effective way to paint a computer-generated picture.

I like Basqiat stuff. I've a massive print in my house from '99 from an exhibition in Austria. . .
Banksy also I like.
He finds ways to spike against the guff and the acceptance that most people accept without question.

Both.

I like Banksy.

Witty, cutting edge, alternative but understandable. Understanding art is the key and he brings that to the masses of unartistic buffoons like myself. Danger of running on too long though, as mentioned.

Professional or artistic jealousy Pstotto ?

First of all, the graffiti is an insult to Basquiat, whose aped figure is treated out of context as realism. It's also profoundly racist to suggest any such figure equates to an ethnic minority. It's an insult to the police for rubbishing their job, it's an insult to the public for the presumption by the media that 'Banksy' (Ian Mcl is probably right) is OK.

The work is publicity stunt for the Barbican Gallery so he is quite clearly establishment.

Hatfield, as one of the 25,000 YBA's you've never heard of, all art publicity grates.

really like the ferris wheel one. not arsed about the other, i get the point of it but its a pretty dull piece.

i've been looking forward to the basquiat exhibition for ages, love his stuff. saw an exhibition of his work at the guggenheim in bilbao which was superb.

banksy is a bit hit and miss for me but i'd rather have him out there doing his stuff than not.

Certainly not. I don't want to be a graffiti artist, I am miffed at my career at the mercy of cheap politics, who wouldn't be? Case in point Lubiana Himid is a talentless black artist given the red carpet treatment (Turner Prize nominee) and she IS JUDGING John Moores!!!!!! My work being judged by her, if I enter.

The Tate describes her: Lubaina Himid was born in 1954 in Zanzibar, Tanzania. She studied Theatre Design at Wimbledon College of Art and an M.A in Cultural History at the Royal College of Art. She is Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire.

Whereas Pstotto draws on newspapers.

OK Beehole you can have a go at me for a bit of sport. Have you seen her work? She has no ability at all. Incidentally I have an M.A. in Fine Art and I'm a published academic.

Thanks for liking my cartoon. Good version of the London Stadium, innit?

I'm looking forward to seeing my show too. Who is going to pay for it, the DSS?

There is a heritage of art in this country. hers is on the level of 'community arts.' Thank God I've never been in such a community either. Problem is she is now being given the job OF RULING OVER.... potentially my work.

I like Pstotto and I like his artwork.

I'm yet to see any of UpTheBeehole's artwork. Of course, it isn't a requisite of him to create his own artwork in order to critique somebody else's but it would be nice to see some.

If he has any.

Like Pstotto, I'm not qualified to pass judgment on Lubaina Himid's work. I don't have an MA from the Royal College of Art, neither does Pstotto. I'm not a Professor of Contemporary Art at a university, and neither is Pstotto.

I haven't been nominated for the Turner prize, neither has Pstotto. I haven't been given an MBE for services to art, but neither has Pstotto.

Lubaina Himid has all the above though.

So presumably you don't post player ratings either? Apologies if you're a Premier League footballer, in which case you presumably do post player ratings.

You have a strange set of criteria for making judgements. You must live a very limited life or defer a lot of important decisions.

Anyway, it's clear that Pstotto's problem with her is that she's a black, African woman who makes black, African art. He doesn't wish to be involved in her 'community'. Bearing in mind she lives in Preston I'm wondering what community this is, the Fulwood black panthers maybe?

His posting history (including on another thread this morning) suggests that he's got a real hangup around the concept of people being black.

I am qualified to judge Himid's work, I'm a skilled draughstman with an M.A. Upthebeehole is being a jerk who knows nothing about being the wrong side of a political directive, perhaps. Basquiat is black and I quite like some of his stuff, but for sure not the politics surrounding it.

Go through his posting history, he has a bizarre aversion to black people, and I can only think of one reason behind it.

At one stage he was saying the Premier League Show was about 's*cking bl*ck c*cks'.

Just bizarre

We all find Pstotto bizarre but that's not the same as being a "racist" is it?

If we're talking of the bizarre, the most bizarre thing on this thread is your assertion that everybody needs the exact same qualification as an artist in order to judge their work.

That's bizarre.

I wouldn't personally wish to hang a print by Lubiana Himid in my house - just not my scene - but having googled a selection of her work which took about 1 minute I really think that to call her talentless is way out of order. It looks pretty good to me even though it is not my personal preference.

Keith, her work might be OK for those not in the know, but it's not high art worthy of national interest. I doubt she would have even got a third class degree if she'd presented her work for a Fine Art degree show when I was a student in the early 80's.

Dom, just go to the chippy and enjoy the grease stains on the newspaper if you want.

Dom, not much transcendental structure that I can see, but then the 'transcendental aspect' can incorporate anything. There's a bit of flair to the marks and some inventiveness regarding the 21C warrior headgear implied, so I'll give you 3/10 for having a go.

Perhaps if you'd done some drawings on newspapers then you might have fared better... Thing is, high culture hasn't bought into the idea yet, so being a follower and saying it's like a Pstotto, wouldn't have got you very far.

She got a Masters from the Royal College of Art in 1984

Dom, just go to the chippy and enjoy the grease stains on the newspaper if you want.
I'm prepared to admit that I am not a student of art - nor that I pretend to any particular taste. I have to say that I find your comment about those "not in the know" to be extremely insulting to me (and probably many others) - although perhaps not as insulting as your reference to the lady's paintings.

As for your own work - if the images which you have posted really are examples of work whoich you consider to be superior then I will throw tact aside and state that I think they are sh*t. But then I'm just an ignorant person.

You really have made yourself appear very arrogant ...but that's just my opinion.

UPB she got her masters in cultural history not painting. Keith, if I were a nuclear physicist and put an equation you would not be in the know, but would you be insulted then?

There is seeing and not seeing but because folk can see, they don't know.

Claret-lad, folk don't know what is behind aesthetics yet. It hasn't yet been fully understood. Nobody knows what an abstract painting is an image of. nevertheless there are lousy and terrific abstract paintings, some worth nowt some worth lots of money.
