Chelsea appear to have removed the final obstacle (planning wise) from going ahead with the stadium redevelopment - so was it a bigger cash offer or is the recent spate of Russia related deaths a coincidence in this resolution

The last of the financial reports for last season are coming in - ours have been discussed elsewhere - Spurs announced there's today %43 increase thanks to the new TV deal and Champions league - still got to find another £2-300m to pay off the new ground though

When looking at our financial results it is interesting to contrast with Watford, whose revenue was just £3m more than ours

On the subject of Watford there are some interesting questions emerging about borrowings and tax avoidance at the owners other clubs

watfords wages were £76m last season, an increase of £18m on the previous season (£58M), this 58m figure is less than our £61M figure so it will be interesting to compare our wage bill this year with watfords £76m last year as that was their second season.

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
It will indeed - Their debt is rising too and there is no way with those figures that they can run the club on a day to day basis without a significant overdraft account. Something the new Chief Exec at West Brom recently voiced his concern about there.claretandy wrote:watfords wages were £76m last season, an increase of £18m on the previous season (£58M), this 58m figure is less than our £61M figure so it will be interesting to compare our wage bill this year with watfords £76m last year as that was their second season.

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
Middlesbrough financial results have been revealed today (strange day) - similar turnover to us and wages of £57m (no bonuses for staying up) but reasonable as an overall percentage after the huge gamble of the promotion season revealed a £32m loss

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
Interesting to see that, despite all the suggestions from Burnley fans that Boro were splashing the cash, their wage bill was lower than ours.
Although I would suspect that we had some hefty staying up bonuses which would probably have dropped it below that level if we'd not stayed up.

More than us according to swiss ramble
Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
It's a matter of how they were reported.claretandy wrote:More than us according to swiss ramble
Burnley £55.5m wages + £5.5m NIC & pension = £61m
Middlesbrough £57m wages + £8m NIC & pension = £65m
Neither figure is wrong, but if we compare like with like, Middlesbrough paid more,.
Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
You're right, that £57m figure in the paper isn't including social security costs (the equivalent figure for BFC is £55.5m)

A new report suggests that PSG may have breached UEAF FFP for a second time by overstating sponsorship revenues
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/20 ... fp-breach/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
If so how hard will UEFA hit - a fair chunk of the previous £50m fine was suspended against future adherence - so if they are guilty the fine could be eye-watering and seriously hit that much needed squad re-build as they seek European glory- naturally PSG claim it's all lies

meanwhile Man City don't think they have spent anywhere near enough yet to get the team they want - and fully expect to shell out at least another £150m this summer, though it could well be more than double that if they get their number one targets for the positions they are looking at

A bit more detail here about which deal in particular that is causing PSG there current FFP problems - 120m euro a year from the Qatar Tourist Authority (I suspect that is the biggest annual sponsorship in world football - no wonder it stands out when the same state effectively owns the club)

Here is a story that is going to run for a quite a while yet and could soon be featuring our fans being exploited - European clubs raising ticket prices to absurd levels because the opponents are considered rich - as you can imagine UEFA are not being swift to deal with an issue when it is predominantly English clubs that are being affected

With the inroads that football has made in North America over the last few years, the added money is no real surprise. Saturday morning footie is a staple for many over here these days, and we're still the richest market in the world.

An overview of the top spenders in European Football in the last 10 years - No surprise as to who leads the way but the contrast with Real Madrid and the CL success is bigger than I imagined - Also surprising how much the Italians have spent for their scant reward - Juventus lead the way there naturally

The annual football brand value (yes I understand that winds up us mere supporters) report is out - with United leading the way globally followed by Real, Barca, Bayern then City.
We are up to 27th on the list globally (squeezed between Palace and Bournemouth) following a 57% increase and a current brand value of £232m that puts us 11th in the UK and miles ahead of Celtic! wow - Just shows what stability and a strong identity can do for a club

As Premier League execs prepare for a highly charged end of season meeting David Conn of the Guardian writes about:
- the greed of the top six
- the absolute moneypot that is the champions league (next season they move into a new 3 yr deal giving even more money - Leicester got £70m last season as English Champions - City will get substantially more next season)
- and also how Parachute payments distort the Championship
all the while acknowledging that the riches are seemingly going to continue to grow with Scudamore already promising that in the next cycle clubs will earn more than they do now as a result of the growth in international rights obliterating the £0.5 billion reduction in domestic rights

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
Der Spiegel has produced a book highlighting some of the ridiculous contracts in the premier league - some of the bonuses are laughable particularly the so called "loyalty" bonus.
I also worked out from this that it is cheaper for Utd not to play Sanchez and put Rashford on in his place as Sanchez gets £75k appearance bonus for each game - bonkers

Daily Mail get in on the act re the big six wanting more of the overseas rights monies - and look at the overall TV monies earned during the life of the Premier League - interestingly after 4 seasons we are only 2 places behind that lot down the road (18 seasons) and will overtake them next season. That lot who were 10 years ahead of us (13 seasons) are already behind in total earnings

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
Is the difference between us and Watford given they have been in the league for 5 seasons whilst we have four due to the respective first seasons in the league with 2009-10 payments much higher than their first season when they finished bottom in 99-00. The 4 seasons they have been present since 2006-07 and the last three must have paid them more than us given the only season we have been paid more is this one, about £12 million more but we have an apparent £41million surplus against Watford.Do the figures include parachute monies as this would seem to be the only way we could get ahead of them?

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
A bit of a sensationalist article on the value of sleeve deals (i.e. sponsorship like our play golf crash) looks like Arsenal are about to get a £10m a year deal for one - in context that is substantially more than our shirt deal and approximately a quarter of Arsenal's shirt deal.
Don't get carried away with the article quoting £8m value for average prem teams - that is value to the sponsor not what they will pay - I think the quarter to a third of the shirt sponsor value is what is likely to be paid tops (there is also the risk of devaluing the title sponsor income) and not many average prem teams get £8m for the shirt deal

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
This thread opened with Utd's record breaking financial results and has since looked at how a tsunami of money has swamped the game we love. Last month we heard that FIFA had been approached with a £25 billion deal for 2 new tournaments. Today was the deadline for FIFA to give an affirmative to the deal but their is much that (mainly European) interested parties want to know before committing to the idea.
Needless to say it is Utd who see probably better than any other just what it can mean to them and for those involved

Man Utd still the most valuable Football Club in the world (it says European but their is no contender elsewhere) - no surprise really (even with all the negative press around Jose's rebuild) - the Premier League's domination continues to grow though as FFP continues to 'restrict' the growth of others

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
So following the news last week that Newcastle made an operating loss of over £90m with wages at £112m in the Championship (do I remember correctly Rafa saying they could not compete with us on wages last summer) it transpires they also spent £1.3m at Sports Direct last season - the mind boggles and yes what about FFP

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
Following on from the recent attempt at revising the club world cup - it has emerged (unsurprisingly) that the European Clubs Association are working on grander plans which involve
- more European games
- significantly smaller Domestic Leagues (or as I believe the big clubs take part in a split league not too dissimilar to what happens in Scotland)
As ever the reasoning is money focused and it is telling that it is clubs like Juventus who are pushing hardest to compete with the riches of the Premier league (they could see themselves outside the European top ten in the coming seasons as the PL gets richer and richer)

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
So following Lee Charnley's admission about the gamble Newcastle took in the Championship - Saturdays play off will see Villa in a make or break situation - win and they should be ok - lose and the team will be broken up as the financial reality of 2 years in the Championship and FFP hits with a potential transfer embargo and the risk of years in the wilderness

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
Remember those 2 domestic tv packages that didn't sell with the rest a few months ago - well it looks like they are going to be let go very cheaply - essentially each package is for 2 rounds of games, but allowing the broadcaster to show all the games live simultaneously. It was designed to get people like amazon interested but has fallen flat on it's face.
When combined with the BT/Sky mutual agreement to broadcast each others packages it has brought in substantially less revenue than the previous deal. Scudamore has managed to save face though as the yet to be completed internal rights sales have already more than made up for the loss. Resulting in the way they are divided up being the next battleground - the next skirmish of which is in 2 weeks

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
FIFA doing something that appears reasonable on the face of it - whatever next. They want to limit agent's commission on transfer fees to 3% - naturally the agents aren't too happy about it. Is it me or is this the most sensible thing they have suggested in years

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
In post #193 I highlighted Villa's lurch into financial woe should they lose in the play-offs - which we now know they did. It is just coming to light how much they need to find to head off FFP sanctions - £40m yes that's right £40 million - That's the gamble the Geordies won but Villa didn't - ouch
of course given that we nabbed their colours just over a century ago we have made a contribution of around £1m as a consequence of Westwood's appearances last term - or is that Defour's injury

£40 million?
They best hope they find someone stupid enough to pay ridiculous money for Grealish and that winger they got from West Ham.

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
Snodgrass was on loan and John Terry has left - he was on £70k a week in the Championship!!

Wouldn’t it be nice/interesting if the whole financial thing did an “ ITV Digital” with Burnley FC sitting relatively well.
Not likely I agree but stranger things have happened.
