Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
So Man City become the 2nd confirmed club under FIFA investigation for illegal transfers of youth players - unlike Chelsea they are threatened with a 1 year transfer ban or 2 windows - I said the January window might get tasty just need to find out who the other three are - not Man Utd apparently perhaps they are sponsoring the investigation in the hope that parallel bans for all their rivals will help them with a coherent transfer policy

Accrington's Chairman Andy Holt has his say on the Championship clubs wanting more money - he is very supportive of any move to bring more money into the League pyramid and reduce the growing gaps between the various leagues

We all laughed at Bolton and Rovers, to name just two, for borrowing money using future income as a guarantor, but I'll guess none of us would envisage such big clubs doing it.

It has been building since last week - the pressure on Gordon taylor to quit only seems to be increasing - you get the impression that an awful lot of people have been waiting for this opportunity to stick the boot in - I have never understood how is vast salary can be justified given earnings in the lower leagues - the dirt keeps coming out - remind me, who did he play for? the shame the shame

In the Premier League era Footballers have grown to be very wealthy and naturally have looked to secure their futures with solid investments - that first generation of Premier League players have encountered some shocking advice that has left them exposed to fraud and HMRC investigation and fines - it is estimated that around 500 ex players have lost over £1billion as a result of this bad advice - and where were the PFA

We know finances at Barca are barmy - irrespective of presumed revenue (which the accounts show to be stratospheric) - but just who in the right mind signs a deal with Liverpool which says if we sign another one of your players we have to give you an extra 100m Euro on top of the transfer fee - kudo's to Liverpool though for that one

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
Looks like we are about to find out whether the Football Leaks info has legal standing, and just how much the Sheik is prepared to use his wealth to stymie UEFA in court - Missing the Champions League and a transfer embargo would certainly up the ante and show a lot more metal from the authorities
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/20 ... xt-season/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I have said earlier the coming window could be explosive as a number of clubs look to get signings in ahead of any embargo (some are threatened with missing 4 windows) but imagine if the authorities got their act together and it started with the January one - We could find out just how good the kids really are at the big clubs - wouldn't that be something Gareth - not that they are all English

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
Many have talked on this board about renewing stands at Turf Moor and some of the mooted costs are completely out of touch with reality - Fulham are to replace one stand and increase overall capacity by 5000 - the estimated cost £100m (it is very rare these things come in on estimate). Yes it will have lots of nice features - but these are fast becoming the minimum expectation of many who attend Premier League football (can't say that they are all fans).

So the owner of Leeds Utd and Eleven sports is having to learn the hard way - no domestic TV broadcaster will buy the La Liga or Serie A broadcast rights from him (why finance a rival or someone who constantly berates you for showing his team and their associated sponsors too much on TV and not paying enough for the privilege. Seems they have an all sports block on him too as UFC have just cancelled their deal with Eleven sports as no UK broadcast partner could be found. he is now going cap in hand and tugging his forelock in hope of renegotiating said footy deals - good luck with that one

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
recent discussion of matchday income and contributory factors such as mascot fees have shown how clubs seek to grow income by whatever means necessary - latest target from the journo's is the charges for spreading the cost of a season ticket via DD (apr of 36% at PNE - ouch) - no mention of our well loved scheme - but hey we take in other areas. Seems like the authorities (not FA) are telling the clubs they need to sort themselves out before they do it for them

The financial chaos at Bolton Wanderers continues. Wages for November and December paid by the PFA despite Ken Anderson claiming to have paid them and today stock from the club shop has been reclaimed.
There is a parody Twitter account for Ken Anderson. After the NYD 6-0 defeat it tweeted, to be fair that is worst trip to Hull for Trotters since Del Boy and Rodney went.

the exercising of FFP rules and punishments by football authorities has often fallen short of expectations since their introduction - it seems recently there has been a renewed appetite to pursue them more aggressively - the first in this country to feel this looks like being Birmingham City - a team on a recent charge in the championship - no surprise that Harry Redknapp played his part in the transfer madness that meant city were paying over £2 in wages for every £1 earned

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
We know that Chelsea have been farming players for profit for over a decade - and that a number of other clubs have joined in the approach - but just how profitable can it be? very it seems - Liverpool keep making vast returns on their rejects (Sterling excepted as being a reject) and if you look at Man City it transpires they have made over £136m from 13 kids with just 33 appearances between them
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footb ... adrid.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
for the most part these are rejects - Pep still maintains Sancho is not good enough for his team for instance - Impossible to believe that the equivalent of a Mee and Trippier deal would be possible now even given how much we put into their development
What is apparent is that these players were farmed - these are not local academy kids - they have been brought in for a purpose that may not necessarily include being in City's 1st team squad

One other factor not mentioned here is the impact of the Blackout Window for showing football between 3-5pm on Saturdays. Eleven Sports tried to show some games (Spanish I think) during this period and were pushed to stop.Chester Perry wrote:So the owner of Leeds Utd and Eleven sports is having to learn the hard way - no domestic TV broadcaster will buy the La Liga or Serie A broadcast rights from him (why finance a rival or someone who constantly berates you for showing his team and their associated sponsors too much on TV and not paying enough for the privilege. Remarkable average wage there for Newcastle and that was two seasons ago in the Championship.
Not difficult to believe, therefore, that Shelvey is currently earning upwards of £80k per week and thus out of our reach in this transfer window.

When they were in the Championship, Newcastle's wage bill was well over £100m, only the Premier League top 6 had higher.Royboyclaret wrote:Remarkable average wage there for Newcastle and that was two seasons ago in the Championship.

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
Be very brave, and maybe even foolish, to take on the lawyers of Man City on what appears to be a very dubious argument. The fact that Sheikh Mansour's family are effectively owners of the whole or most of Abu Dhabi blurs the edges as to whether the sponsorship actually comes from Etihad Airways or from the Sheikh personally.
In any case owners can put finance into clubs via sponsorships, so long as the price paid is considered fair market value.

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
If Rui Pinto - really is "John" the man behind Football Leaks - then Man City seem to have things well in hand - he has just been arrested in Hungary

Question - having put a whole state behind the financing of a football club via elaborate sponsorship deals and threatening to crush UEFA with the mega financing of Lawyers - what are the chances of using that state's intelligence services behind finding the man who has made their ruses public

Isn't the issue that it isn't fair market value. I wonder how much access they have to other clubs finances for benchmarking purposes.Royboyclaret wrote:In any case owners can put finance into clubs via sponsorships, so long as the price paid is considered fair market value.

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
Good point and excellent question aggi - unfortunately I have no idea but suspect that given how public some deals appear at the biggest clubs it should be fairly well understood what the mean is at clubs knocking at the door of global top tier size (City not their yet but anything appears possible

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
Who would want to be Richard Scudamore - nobody apparently - as stories emerge of another leading candidate turning down the role - do they think the whole she =bang is about to collapse?

The Long read in the Guardian gives Detail on Scudamore's phenomenal success and how the Premier League came close to tearing itself apart of the international rights - with one club named as being the prime instigator of money grab

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
It comes as no surprise that the Premier League dominates UEFA's list of wealthiest clubs (13 of the top 30) - but just how much it is responsible for overall profitability of clubs viewed on a Europe wide basis is - meanwhile UEFA are claiming FFP is responsible for the increasing profitability of clubs whereas we actually see it is vast TV deals for the Premier Leahue and Champions League that also play a very significant role

It's an interesting article, especially about Scudamore.Chester Perry wrote:The Long read in the Guardian gives Detail on Scudamore's phenomenal success and how the Premier League came close to tearing itself apart of the international rights - with one club named as being the prime instigator of money grab

One thing the article gets wrong though. In the last paragraph he writes 'But he knew all too well that those outside forces would keep chipping away at the Premier League’s raison d’être...', implying that this meant that the Premier League was about big money for all Premier League clubs. It wasn't. You can see this in the attitude of Man City's CEO as described in this piece. He only wants money for Man City and to hell with anyone else.
The Premier League’s raison d’être was for the top six (five as it was originally) to extract as big a proportion of the TV money as they could for themselves. For that reason I understand their issue with the overseas rights. However they simply don't care about the rest of the clubs.

Re: Football's Magic Money Tree
What is particularly interesting is how much the American owners are pushing for the imbalance - when you consider their whole competitive philosophy is built on even distribution of tv monies - perhaps it is because their is no closed competition or draft
