Hollies.Are they Burnley fans?
Three of the Hollies band were born and grew up in Nelson and Burnley.Tony Hicks,Bobby Elliott and Bernie Calvert became world famous with the Hollies. They even got inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. They produced classic songs such as He Ain,t Heavy ,He,s My Brother. and I,am Alive.
I am just wondering if these lads are Burnley fans?
I know the band the Milltown Brothers from Colne are Clarets. Not sure about the Hollies.
Anyone know.
Thanks

Re: Hollies.Are they Burnley fans?
I know for sure that Bernie Calvert was because him and his dad used to sit on the same row as me in the cricket field stand during the 1980's, along with the landlord and landlady of The Brunshaw who were also on the same row and always arrive ten minutes after kick off after they had cleared up from the lunchtime session. No idea about the other Hollies, although Tony Hicks occasionally turned up in the Lane Ends in Brierfield, may local at the time.

If we sang a version of one of their songs, that might help.

As far as I'm aware they all are/were. My dad was in a band with one of them (can't remember which one of the three now) before they joined the Hollies. Circa the era of the Dolphins, Reasons Five (My Dads band) etc. Got a DVD of the bands transferred from the early 60's from the old cine reel film.cold claret wrote:Three of the Hollies band were born and grew up in Nelson and Burnley.Tony Hicks,Bobby Elliott and Bernie Calvert became world famous with the Hollies. They even got inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. They produced classic songs such as He Ain,t Heavy ,He,s My Brother. and I,am Alive.

Re: Hollies.Are they Burnley fans?
As an aside. Everton chose the Hollies song He ain’t heavy ..... to accompany the minute’s applause for Hillsborough earlier this year. It helped make the whole thing very moving. It’s not a chanting type of song but very anthemic (if that’s a word).
That or the air that I breath would be perfect.

Would be good for the club to play that as the teams are running out

Re: Hollies.Are they Burnley fans?
He ain’t heavy could be a great anthem. As Tony says, not a chanter but very anthemic. You’d think it would be the sort of song that could quite easily be adapted by any lyricists out there (not sure we’ve got one mind).
A club anthem shouldn’t mention players (certainly not current players) though, it needs to be timeless.

Agree it should be timeless. Just keep playing 'All I Need' before the start of the match and it will soon catch on.

I saw The Clash with the Sensies supporting at KGH Blackburn, and after asking if there were any Burnley supporters in the audience, they launched into the terrace anthem of the time, with a previously surpressed element of the audience suddenly joining in. Burnley everywhere. Halcyon days.

Re: Hollies.Are they Burnley fans?
I saw the Burnley members of the Hollies when they were called Rick Shaw and the Dolphins playing in a ballroom of some sort in Barnoldswick in about 1961. They were the back up group to Joe Brown and the Bruvvers. Regarding their support of the Clarets, I well remember Bernie Calvert their bass player ((who replaced Eric Haydock, the original Hollies' bass player), standing next to me on the Longside in the early sixties. He was always cooly dressed, overcoat draped over his shoulders etc.
Re: Hollies.Are they Burnley fans?
Yes, that true in a lot of instances. Shame we do t have one. Something about the older songs that just works with football.ClaretTony wrote:If it’s an anthem it doesn’t need any change of lyrics at all. It can be sung just as it was.
Re: Hollies.Are they Burnley fans?
If they are Clarets then surely they can write the words for us!

Re: Hollies.Are they Burnley fans?
The Air That I Breath could almost be the perfect anthem for the team to walk out to obviously once it caught on you turn the sound off at the chorus for the crowd to take over... The real issue with it though is it takes an eternity to get to said chorus. The club would need somebody to rework it into a reduced version.

Spoke to Bobby Elliott in a local supermarket soon after our great win at Old Trafford and he was dissa pointed that the media focus was on their failings and not on our superb performance on which we both agreed. The we speaks for itself and hopefully answers your question .

Clear from his autobiog (It Ain't Heavy, It's My Story, just published) that Bobby Elliott is a Claret.

I agree with this.
Why mess with the words to fit a football theme.
Two issues would be people learning the words, and singing at the right speed.
Other than that, a great idea.

Just started Bobby Elliot's book. Starts off in the Talbot pub. Bobby was born in Bank Hall, Burnley and lived in Chiltern Avenue.

Bobby Elliot was born on the same day as my older brother, also in Bank Hall on the 8th December 1941, the day after the attack on Pearl Harbour.
