William G. Stewart

Post by FactualFrank » Thu Sep 21, 2017 5:55 pm

I've just read that he's passed away aged 84.

Many will know him as the presenter of Fifteen to One from 1988 to 2003.

:( I used to go to my grandma's after school and she'd always have 15-1 on and then Countdown which i hated for a long time because there were cartoons on other channels, but i grew to like the quizzes and there was something really nice about William G. Stewart. It's a shame to hear he died.

Wow genuinely only checked his age 2 days ago and the same thing happened with Ugo Ehiogu. Checked his wiki page then next day reported it on sky sports news he had died. Really spooky. Rip.

Didn't he have something to do with attempting to return the Elgin Marbles to their rightful home?

R.I.P a great game show host

Sad news. I was on fifteen to one in 92, he was a decent chap. He did indeed argue for the elgin marbles to be returned to Greece.

For any Countdown geeks out there, if you weren't already aware of it, try http://www.apterous.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for online play against the top players of this and previous eras.

Used to watch it when I was on morning shift back in the early 90's. Can't say he had much of a personality from what I remember, vaguely; but RIP chap!

The point of the show was that it was not personality driven - the point was that it concentrated on the questions.

He took charge of the show without taking centre stage.

There was never any preening or seeking attention. No desperate attempts at humour or forced small talk. He just read the questions.
