3 goals in the last 5 league games

Post by IndigoLake » Sat Sep 23, 2017 5:09 pm

Scored 3 versus Chelsea which is great. But only 3 since then in 5 league games.

Something of a concern?

Yep, don't look like scoring at the moment. However, we're defending very well.

Absolutely. Always nice to get another clean sheet.

Maybe it would have been sensible to bring in that pacy, wide midfielder that so many of us were crying out for. Regardless, we're in a good position!

If we carry on playing the way we played today we'll be lucky to score another 3 before Christmas. :(

From memory (feel free to correct) we won against Palace creating zero chances - our goal was a gift
We created 1 good chance today (Wood header)

That, at home, against Palace and a newly promoted team can only be looked at as poor

We haven't created a goal in open play at home all season. (inc. Leeds in the cup)

They tried to walk the ball into the net. Wood looked ponderous, why didn't they give Vokes a go? They looked scared to win, like they don't want the attention of being in the top four tonight and all the pressure that comes with that. We were lucky not to lose, regarding some of their chances.

The lack of creativity is worrying. We have the players to play nice football now but failing to bring it to the game. Can't put a finger on what specifically needs to change but we need to start stretching the opposition a lot more than we have been doing when in possession.
Defence is looking good as usual though.

Wouldn't have scored had we of played 3 weeks additional time instead of the allocated 3 minutes. We have no central attacking midfield player, 3 wide players who are all the same, 4 target men strikers. Our failures in the transfer market biting us on the ass, totally out of ideas today again.

We are so negative at home, we play like we are up against Man Utd at Old Trafford every game. Absolute no intensity, no real urgency and a defence that doesn't push out of our own penalty box, get them up the pitch, that big old knacker had no pace to beat a high line. Compress the pitch, far too happy to sit in and defend which leaves Wood so isolated because the gap between the lines becomes enormous.

Always thought wood a strange signing. Maybe he'll get better when he integrates properly.

We actually created one decent chance today that Wood should have scored. It was a very good cross from Ward and a poor miss. Aside from that we created very little but didn't play too badly. Some of the passing in the first half was very good, It didn't work at all for Arfield which made us a little toothless but I certainly thought it was a better preformance than some games. We're transitioning into a side that uses the ball more at the minuite and I think there was enough today to suggest we can be more than just a hoofball side. Some flair and creativity has been needed for a while, if we do finally bring some in we will be looking a very comfortable premier league side in my opinion.

Worryingly Ashley Barnes looks like being Plan B, in the Premier League, really ? We're going to need more than that, much more. Also, no threat or quality out wide, we've had long enough to address that issue and have singularly failed to do so.

Yes. Barnes preferred over Vokes as a sub. But don't say I didn't tell you so.

And Brady seems ponderous at best. We need a good shot of Dean Marney in the midfield. Somebody to drive us forward.

Arfield tried he's utmost to drive us forward imo, but on too many occasions just went a touch too far and lost the ball, unlucky on 1 or 2 occasions, quite clearly it wasn't working for wood and Vokes should have been on.

Huddersfield have got 2 in their last 5 games.

Is that not a bigger problem for them?

Sure! But to be honest, I don't really care about Huddersfield's problems :)

I can see Taylor and Bardsley getting in soon. No offence to Lowton and Ward but they offer something different rather than just being solid. Bardsley drives forward better and Taylor has more flair.

I agree that we to get more crosses in from the fullbacks if the 'wide'men are going to play so narrow. Taylor and Bardsley may help on this front or at least one of them.

I'd argue Ward is our most consistent attacking threat

What sums it up for me is our best player yesterday was Defour who was everywhere! Spent far too much of his time doing the defensive side of the game when we desperately need his creativity. I'm not necessarily knocking that as it was part of his game he was most lacking in last season. But! He needs to be playing at the front of a midfield three with Westwood mopping up and for me, Cork alongside him. Brady blows more cold than hot but he's realistically the only outlet we have. Which is frustrating. Ball retention is poor to non existent most of the time recently. We didn't create many chances again, but without the creativity and the ability/presence in the middle to orchestrate things we're spening most of our time on the back foot. Rendering players like Defour useless in an attacking sense. That's not a dig at Defour, he was our best player yesterday, but I'd rather have him pushing, probing, creating than sat so deep he could have no positive effect on the game.

There seems to be a lack of intensity from the players in the home games, it could be down to the opposition not being of grand stature and the atmosphere but the manager needs to fix it because away they are 100% at it

SD is a great manger for us and is not daft but please can he get it over to the lads that if they do not have a pop at goal we won't score. I cannot recall a single shot on goal from outside the box. A couple of times Brady looked to be lining one up but never pulled the trigger.

I had to explain to my young lad that Defour wasn't playing Centre Half yesterday he was making that many tackles. He came so deep to get the ball off Ben Mee and stop him kicking it out of play all the time.

9 points, 1(unlucky) defeat in 6 including away games v Chelsea, Spurs and Liverpool, personally I'd have taken that at the start of the season.

I like the 4-5-1 formation home and away. The main issue I have is Hendrick being our most advanced player of the 5. SD should have changed him a long time before he did.

A 4-1-4-1 formation might be the answer. Put Westwood (or possibly Hendrick) in front of our two central defenders which would allow Defour and Cork to play a more forward attacking role.

I don't think it works like that with a Dyche side, it's 4 pts and two clean sheets. WBA was the better performance but we missed 3 sitters in a game were the opening goal was always going to set the tone. It could have been 7 from 3, with the stats bellowing fortress Turf Moor again.

Lets see how we fare when we're clear underdogs on a more 'free hit' afternoon.
