Personally I'm a bit concerned about his habit (ok, seen it twice), of parrying the ball back in front of the goal. He's got away with it so far. Hope I'm just being paranoid.....

He did fine. One hairy moment when he shovelled a shot out into the 6 yard box, but that apart he was pretty assured and did everything asked of him entirely competently.

We may have different ideas of what constitutes an excellent save because I'd describe both of Pope's as bread and butter.

I know we were not great, but the threads on here tonight have gone the usual way.
I'm expecting the "Dyche out" one to be posted around 2156 on current trajectory, and "worst performance ever" to air around about 1134.

You may be right, but I was responding to a post suggesting their keeper didn't make a save - when in fact he made more than Pope.tim_noone wrote:We wouldn't have scored if we were still playing..there keeper had bugger all to do.

Pope had nothing above the ordinary to do.
Thankfully he did that competently.

He had two straight forward saves, one of which he parried into the middle of the goal...but luckily Ben Mee got there first. Not much to do today but not too convincing.

Well second half I'm behind jimmy mac lower goal and said to the guy in the next seat we haven't had a shot on target...then a half hearted shot landed in his arms..I couldn't see if he made any first half from my vantage point.Rileybobs wrote:No offence taken, but he made three saves. Re: Pope saved us from
A clean sheet is a clean sheet however you get it, so well done to Nick Pope.
And it only takes one save, the quantity of saves is irrelevant.
OK, so he spoons a shot out, so what? They didn't score.

I like to imagine the OP is imagining the alternative to Pope would be not having a goalie. In which case he's spot on to be fair.

Re: Pope saved us from
There was something in the second half where he went out like Joe Hart and parried the ball as hard as he could... straight to the oppo. He needs to stop that.
Re: Pope saved us from
Neither keeper had much to do it all, but out of the two Pope had one proper save to make when he parried. Their's was a bystander.Rileybobs wrote:No offence taken, but he made three saves. If you weren’t watching that’s fine but it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

Yes, we had 3 shots on target, they had 2. I’m not sure what exactly the issue is with this fact.taio wrote:Neither keeper had much to do it all, but out of the two Pope had one proper save to make when he parried. Their's was a bystander.

Perhaps you could talk us through these 3 saves.Rileybobs wrote:Yes, we had 3 shots on target, they had 2. I’m not sure what exactly the issue is with this fact.
There was one semi crucial save and that was from pope.
The other chap - whatever he's called - had zero to do.

Re: Pope saved us from
I didn’t say they were crucial saves or good chances, just that their keeper made more saves than Pope. This is in response to a thread started by someone who claims that Pope saved us from defeat. Neither goalkeeper made a save that you wouldn’t expect to be made by a semi-competent goalkeeper. What’s the argument?taio wrote:Perhaps you could talk us through these 3 saves.

You referred to 3 saves and in the same breath said Pope's was bread and butter when his was the only proper save of the game.Rileybobs wrote:I didn’t say they were crucial saves or good chances, just that their keeper made more saves than Pope. Re: Pope saved us from
He wasn't at the Burnley City game in 2010 then.Had it not hissed down and flooded the pitch by half time we were looking at a cricket score. Wasn't it 0-5 at half time?Sidney1st wrote:Macca got in there early with worst game in the history of either the PL or Burnley in the PL, I'm not sure which yet.
Fortunately the second half was played on a quagmire.

Re: Pope saved us from
Pope has done OK though I detect a lack of confidence by him and his defenders, this should pass, but only if he doesn’t continue to make mistakes. The Anfield goal was one Heaton was 70% likely to save, the Leeds one Heaton was 90% likely to save (just my sense of it obviously). The spooning shots back out into play reminds me of Lee Grant and is an equal concern given how much we invite long shots.
We have to get behind him of course because he is only as good as he is, he can’t become as good as Tom overnight.

Re: Pope saved us from
The biggest save was the Uddersfield player who cleared that cross going along the goal line. I haven't seen a replay yet, but I still can't work out how he did it. It was a simple tap in if he'd missed it.

Re: Pope saved us from
Since it was 0-0 and Pope saved one or two shots then he saved us. But that's what goalies do and I don't think the saves were much more than 'run of the mill'. He's doing ok but let's not push the idea that Huddersfield were denied by Yashin type saves.

Pope was excellent today. He commanded his area and dealt with the crosses and one in particular were he made an excellent punch.
He also made a couple of saves were he parred the ball to the sides.
Excellent performance mom for me

We have a brilliant No2 in Pope and he is more than competent in filling Heatons boots.
I honestly think that Nick is better than Tom at dealing with crosses and punching under pressure.
