Very funny bodge.

I played alongside Viv and bowled against David Lloyd whilst he was an amateur at Accrington. He retired hurt and I took 5 for 36.

It’s on four times but only the last of them is on BBC4, the previous three are on BBC NEWS.

A nice little programme, just viewed it.
Mainly Learie Constantine and family, Wes Hall, Charlie Griffiths, Viv Richards and Bumble. The former encountered a fair bit of racism but given the times this was hardly surprising. Lasting bonds were created with the local cricket community which persist to this day. The subject merits a longer treatment, in the early 1960s you could find the whole West Indies side playing in Lancashire, we were damned lucky to have them!
I well remember the 2 minutes silence for Collie Smith ( Burnley's pro) at Turf Moor in 1959? after he was killed in a car crash, car driven by his good friend Gary Sobers.

More rude and ignorant to Learie and his family by some Nelsonians, rather than racism as we know it today. My Grandmother used to talk fondly of him and not just because of cricket, she was a Quaker.

A quite heartwarming programme, especially when you hear great players talking like that about the area and the people.

I knew we were proper around here, but that just brought a bit of Caribbean sunshine to it all.

I watched the programme yesterday morning - good to see my old friend Jack Schofield on there and also John Cook who attended two of the old Clarets Mad dinners with Jimmy Mac. When Jimmy talks about Bob Lord getting rid of him at Burnley because of his friendship with the Cook family, he's the one. Both John & Jack played in the same team as Charlie Griffith, who I was in awe of as a kid when he was at Burnley. It was brilliant seeing him now at 78 and looking pretty good too.

I just wanted the programme to go on for longer but a lovely look back at how popular the game was back in the 1960s showing the crowds, and even earlier pre-war for Constantine.

Very sad to see the old Accy opening bowler Eland though suffering from Alzheimer's.

My wife’s grandad once sat next to Learie Constantine on the bus while he was pro at Nelson. He remarked on the shock of passengers as he walked on the bus and also what a gentlemen he was as he got chatting to him! Was only later that he realised exactly who he was!

Been some fair decent West Indian professionals in the Lancs Lesgue over the years.

Yes, but then again there's bugger all on the tele, so he's better off getting photos and newspaper articles out and remembering that he opened the bowling with Wes Hall.

Right now this is the only one. Which is better than nothing (as available before).

My wish would be for the story to be covered in some way even better! Maybe a series or film?

The Viv' stay alone is worth a film!
(the casting already in my head!)

Thanks for this post as a Nelson lad brought up in the 60's I watched the programme with pride, understanding and then more pride for our part of East Lancs and all we have achieved. Made me laugh when they said and spectators even came from Yorkshire to Todmorden of course back in those days we hadn't sold Todmorden to Yarkshire!!!!

You could probably get a whole host of current and ex Lancashire League players who go on the Turf and watch this site to take an interest.

I started a list last night of the pro's that I had played in the same side at Rishton with and also played against back in the day.

my mate stu worked on this programme; a real labour of love for him. he said they could have made a series with the amount of great stories they had.

he's from london originally but lived in manchester for years. he couldn't believe the number of top players who played local league cricket in lancashire during that era. had a great time researching it all.

West Indian pros and others introduced the game of cricket to me which has given a lifetime's enjoyment since. I've seen many of the best but, possibly surprisingly, think Duncan Carter at Littleboro took some beating.

Duncan Carter was at Burnley in 1965 & 66 and later played for Lowerhouse. Quick in his first few overs but not at the level of a lot of the West Indians who graced the league at the time.

Really nice bloke though who sadly I know suffered a stroke a few years ago.

Agreed Tony but Carter could bat a bit too, didn't he get a big score as substitute pro to win the Worsley cup for Burnley in 1970? I vaguely recall a conversation with Duncan about this at L'boro.

Great programme. Very well put together.

Seen a few mentions of people wanting more and thought I should highlight that the LL are part way through heritage lottery funding project to produce a fully interactive LL experience chronicling history to present day.

The project team have had the first part of the money and are delivering sessions and a proof of concept to try and secure huge funding £300k plus for the full project.

There is a lot of info on the league website and I’d urge folk to sign up and offer their support to the project as it will help secure the remaining funding.

Sadly Duncan passed away a few years ago. He was pro at Littleborough in 1971 when I played my first game and carried on as an amateur for a number of years after. He was directly responsible for persuading first Gary Sobers and then Joel Garner to come and play at the club. Like ty I was privileged to play with and against some great players. Curtly Ambrose is one who immediately springs to mind! Those of us playing league cricket at that time were very very lucky.

Didn't know he'd passed away. A friend of mine who had played with him at Burnley visited Barbados a good few years ago and met him. He'd had his stroke then and wasn't in good health.

Historically the county boundary was the river Calder flowing through the town. But since 1888 the whole town has been in Yorkshire,

The programme is part of a bigger lottery funded initiative called "The Lancashire League Experience" that will be visiting a whole host of local clubs to help,young and old share memories and let the organisers know the influence Cricket had on local communities. Enfield are hosting one of these events on Thursday 16th November when we hope to be showing some rarely seen film footage of Enfield's Worsley Cup win at Rawtenstall from 1978.

When I read this and saw that they were going to be showing some rarely seen footage from Enfield I immediately thought it was Damian Hartley hitting the ball off the square.

To be honest I only faced one ball! We needed 4 to win when I went in and the only ball I faced was edged over the slips for 4. I could say I meant it but that would have been difficult with my eyes shut

Only just got round to watching this tonight. Thoroughly enjoyable. It's hard to believe that I saw King Viv playing on my ground and even more so that our pro was Steve Waugh, albeit just as he was emerging as an international.

Interestingly, I went to an ex-Clarets dinner in May 1987 at Fence Gate. Viv Richards was sat next to Steve Waugh at the next table to us so I can always recall they were LL professionals in the same year.

I was only 10 at the time so probably a bit too young at the time to fully appreciate what I was seeing although it's probably the only time at that I age that I actually sat and watched the game rather than playing round the back of the pavillion.

I think Viv got a ton and Waugh 80-odd; the ball disappeared into Victoria Park almost every over. Viv kept us all waiting what seemed like for hours, but signed autographs for everyone when he did appear.

Steve Waugh used to let us kids bowl at him in the nets and would miss a straight one when we managed to get one on the stumps. I'm proud to say I've cleaned Steve Waugh up!

Watched a programme today on Sky Sports about Michael Holding and it showed a glimpse of him at Rishton CC, with the old wooden tea-room in the background. That was in 1981.

He will have been on his way to the bookies that used to be on the main road near the top of Spring St in Rishton which is where he spent most of his afternoons.
