The Chase- Benedictine

Post by Bfc » Thu Sep 28, 2017 5:21 pm

A questions just been asked on the Chase TV programme, re The Miners selling more than 1,000 per year of one of 3 drinks including Bene. The Bolton Chaser suggested, they drink it with Lemonade. Uhhh.
How wrong could she be, especially coming from down the road.

Had a bene bomb once out of curiosity.
Needless to say I'll stick to bene and hot.

I was tempted out of curiosity but just thought it would have been a disgusting combo.

Bene and Hot is for winners.

Would have loved to show off with that question. Best cold cure known to man.... Bene n Hot.
Brought back by the East Lancashire Regiment after the war, they got the taste for it while stationed close to the monastery where it is still made.

I remember having a cards night with the lads. We ran out of ale and got the Bene out. Somebody said they loved a Bene n hot. While some one else said they prefered a Bene n ice. A third said he'd wondered what a Bene n hot n ice would be like. It was pointed out to him that what he was describing was effectively a Bene and tepid.

It had been a long night.

First World War soldiers of the East Lancs regiments, who were hospitalised, were given Bene to help the recovery of stomach ailments, which had been supplied by Monks from the monastery.
The recipe is a very closely guarded secret, within a small number of monks within the monastery.
I love Double Bene n Hot and have tried Bene n Ice, but I tended to drink them a lot quicker, so finished drinking a lot more of them and quickly reverted back to the Hot.

A piece of wonderful East Lancashire history in a glass.

I'll raise a glass to that

Boil kettle and use water to heat a glass - empty glass.
Add
1 part brandy
2 parts bene
1 part hot water
Perfect drink. 8-)

Just a beautiful piece of history in the present.
Hats off to the Burnley Miners Club and all who keep the tradition alive.

Was a question on QI about 10 years ago. Fry gave the history, with no mention of lemonade thank god. Had a lot of trouble trying to find it down here, had to go to a small independent off licence in Putney near work.

Ninety odd percent of bene is drunk in Burnley is it not? That was the QI snippet if I remember.

It is indeed! I think I'm right in saying that the distillary use a unique large size bottle for't miners, as it's supped in such large quantities!

Occasionly, a rep turns up during the week. Say a quiet Tuesday.

He'll dish out free Benedictine all afternoon! Word soon gets about! The sight of lots of drunk but very jolly and happy pensioners, is something to behold! God bless 'em!

Isn't it an old person's drink?

I've never tried it mind, but those who have, give me haunting tales of woe from the experience.

I have it most home games - and have drank it for years and I'm only 28.

One of the best drinks in winter for me. The problems occur because it is so easy to drink and is stronger than vodka ....... Which is never a good when you're on your 6/7th double.

It's a must on the Turf but that's only because the Lager and Cider are so bad.

It's a great drink. Gives you a proper kick up the backside. I love it. They keep some in for me at my local in the Midlands. I've had many a good session on the stuff. Always taken with hot water. I've always felt I'm doffing my cap in my own little way to the old boys in the East Lancs regiment and celebrating my Burnley roots.

Get some down you

Why has Bene never been the sponsor on the clubs shirt?

It's not a million miles away from Jagermeister, and the Jagerbomb is a drink of choice for a lot of young drinkers.

It's better than Jagermeister!

I enjoyed the film of the Miners. Never been there though but my grandad ( who died before I was born) went through both wards with the East Lancs Regiment. just assume he must have enjoyed a Bene n hot.
