Bad Referees and Burnley
Bad Referees and Burnley
Just heard the name Beeby on the radio and it brought back an instant memory of Richard Beeby who had a shocker on the Turf v Gillingham under Cotterill.
Other shocking referees then came to mind:
Barry Knight v Wolves
George Courtney
Phil Dowd v Everton / Pompey
Jon Moss v Forest
Craig Pawson (nearly game v Burnley)
Heard Kevin Lynch do a couple of after dinner speeches and by all accounts he was bad.
Any other bad ref memories?

I remember that game I think it was 04/05. I think we got beat 2-1 but I only remember it because of the refereeing performance.
Re: Bad Referees and Burnley
Nigel Miller is it?
The bold chap with the Tash.
Then there's Drysdale and the clown Deadman.
Names that make me shiver.

Lee Mason around 07/08 in a 3-2 home defeat to Knob End, that's got to be as bad as it gets.

Re: Bad Referees and Burnley
First really bad one I can recall is George Hartley from Wakefield v Wolves in 1970.
Keith Hackett at Notts County in 76/77 will take some beating because a string of horrendous decisions won them the game.
Beeby v Millwall was bad, Lynch at Barnsley, Pawson last Boxing Day and don’t get me started on Deadman or Drysdale.

Meant to include Drysdale in the list, googled him to check I got his name correct then forgot to put him in the list.
The home game v Birmingham, never heard a whistle that loud. Dean Windass got in trouble in the car park after a game at Bradford with Mr Drysdale.

Can't recall specific games but Peter Willis in the 80s always seemed a poor ref.

On the other hand I recall a ref from early 1990's G Singh who invariably awarded us a penalty at some point every time he rocked up at the Turf. Agree with Lynch though he deserves his reputation as a poor ref.

In over 45 years of watching football, Kevin Lynch is the worst referee I have ever seen.

I'll never forget that Barnsley game. I don't have the words to describe how bad he was but it still makes me angry.

Re: Bad Referees and Burnley
Barry Knight vs Wolves sticks in my memory.
Who was the ref against Preston at home who didn't have the nerve to send off their defender for a blatant handball on the line after a few minutes?
I got a text message from a PNE mate in the away end who assured me it was the most clear handball he'd ever seen and couldn't believe they'd got away with it.

Re: Bad Referees and Burnley
Outstanding referee if you were the home team - frightening if you were the away team. I think he's the only referee I've seen who has twice left us playing against nine men on the Turf. The first was Sheffield United and the second was Stoke when he sent Denis Smith off for opting not to be substituted.gawthorpe_view wrote:McNally in the 70's was entertaining to say the least.

Re: Bad Referees and Burnley
It will never be just you with that Barnsley game but we've had some shockers at Barnsley over the years. In the 2006/07 season, early in that long run without a win, we were denied a clear penalty when they handled the ball on the line and Iain Williamson (I think) awarded a corner.Vegas Claret wrote:Not just me then !
Then in the 2008/09 promotion season we had the horror show from Nigel Miller.

Re: Bad Referees and Burnley
George Tyson for the 2-4 home defeat to Leicester.
2-1 up when he sent Stevo off and Brian Laws ended up in the nets.
For me this was the result that led to our relegation, even though it was months off.
Stevo would still be sliding today if the Leicester player hadn't stopped him.
Was the guy at Barnsley the match where Steve Taylor got hauled down through on goal and he didn't send the last man off? We ended up losing 1-0, I think.

I seem to remember Alan Wilkie having an impressive record of sending off players in Burnley games (possibly from both teams, not just us).

Re: Bad Referees and Burnley
I remember a referee who took charge of our game vs Leeds a few years ago. He was from York! Needless to say, he was extremely biased towards Leeds. It was a strange one.
