No. Anyone watching a a young Defoe would know he was lightning fast and very clinical.

Anyone looking at his goals stats would see that he wasn't actually that clinical, or he didn't have many shots in the course of a season.

It's only in his few years at Sunderland that he was truly prolific, which is when everyone started getting all excited about him and wanting him to play for England etc

I do believe he's not that prolific at Bournemouth....7 appearances and 1 goal in the league.

I know he's not wired up but Chewie Louis Suarez has to be up there. Aubameyang as well

As good as many people know he is, I genuinely feel he is under-rated. May seem crazy, but in my opinion, he is one of the greatest players to ever grace a football pitch. As you said, his injuries showed just how good he was. Was overweight at Real Madrid but still the world's best. If only the early inter Ronaldo hadn't buckled his knee. What a player.

You forgot the World Cups then, apart from 1966 when he was kicked out of the tournament, he contributed significantly to Brazil's domination.

I didnt forget anything, I was never alive to see him play. A simple question having looked at his impressive goal record in terrible leagues.

World football was very different back then. Brazil kept it's stars. One of the best national teams of all time's players played in Brazil. The Copa Libertadores was arguably a stronger competition than the European cup. If anything, he is underrated as most people who pick this didn't see them live.

He was extraordinarily good in the 1970 world cup ....and a complete gentleman as well. Mind you that whole team was excellent as a team.

I seem to remember him scoring 10 in a row for B'mth before he got started.

His striking prowess came to the fire at WHU. I recall he left us for dead during that time.

Lower league, 2 wasn't it at Bournemouth?

As for PL, before Sunderland he didn't get more than 10 in a season that often, hardly the prolific striker you think he used to be.

Sunderland were his best years.

Mk 1 Ronaldo is the best, he was unbelievable.

Batistuta, Van Basten, Henry, Torres, Shearer, Papin, Gullit, Shevchenko, Crespo are all on the level below, but all still absolutely world class.

A couple who were devastating for their clubs but never really for their country - Wright and Fowler. I'd have still called them world class tough. Fowler was such a natural finisher.

Really ?

I'm pretty sure he scored 10 or more goals a season for the vast majority of his career - where did you get your stats from ?

270 goals in 657 games would be pretty hard without scoring 10 or more goals in a season !

I'm with Sid on this. Defoe has been very good but really surprising that anyone could think he's in the same class as most of the other players mentioned. In fact I assumed it was a p1ss take too.

199 league goals in 542 league games.
He's a shade under a 1 in 3 ratio striker, not good enough to be rated alongside some of the names mentioned on here.
Some of his goals are in lower leagues too so it bolsters his figures.

I like Defoe and after what happened with that young Sunderland fan he will always have a massive amount of respect from me, but he just isn't as good as some misty eyed people are claiming.

I'm not misty eyed -nor do I think he's up there with many of the strikers mentioned on this thread.

I was just pointing out that your comment about him rarely scoring more than 10 goals a season is way off - even if you now choose to count only league goals for some reason.

Goals in other comps are still goals and he's scored more than 10 goals in most seasons he's played.

He's been a good striker who has played at the top level for more years than most strikers manage to.

How many of his goals have been in the lower league ? Can't be that many surely.

Not many British strikers have scored as many as Defoe - he can't be that bad.

40 of his league goals are lower league.

I mention league goals because that's usually what I measure a striker on.

He is a good player, just not what I'd consider up there.

But to be mentioned as one of the best ever then you have to look past the trophies won. John Oshea has a big trophy cabinet including a Champions League winners medal. I have never seen Pele play so I asked a question for people who have.

I took you in good faith. He was superb. a level above every other player at the time. Touch, strength, pace, vision and a calmness in front of goal that was unreal.

Why did he never play in a big European league or was the Brazilian league strong back then?

Not even close to the level of Aguero, or even Kane in regards to goals scored games played ratio.

Assuming Kane stays at Spurs he will pass Defoe quick enough in regards to league goals.

Defoe was just a run of the mill striker in regards to league goals, no better or worse than Giroud and plenty of gooners don't rate him.

Santos were a bit like the Harlem Globetrotters. They travelled the world playing exhibitions and he was the big selling point so he would have been on a fortune.
I don't believe there was a lot of inter-continental transfers back then, although Di Stefano was an Argentinian at Real Madrid.
The first South Americans seemed to head for Spain, Italy and Portugal, after the '78 World Cup. Spurs got Ardiles and Villa and Brum got Argentinas left back. Sheff. Utd got a good midfielder but can't grasp his name, Sabadella or summat like?

As good a record as Defoe has, he isn;t up there with the names mentioned in this thread. I wouldn't even have him in the top 5 english strikers in the last 25 years. May scrape into top 10, just.

Surprised no one hasn't mentioned Sheringham. I would class him a much better striker than Defoe.

Couple of other names not mentioned.

Roberto Baggio

Marcelo Salas

Look at their touch for both goals. incredible.

My apologies Cricketfieldclarets, so you did.

Enrico Chiesa? Could really strike a ball, though perhaps not on the same level as Baggio & Batistuta et al.

Let's just agree to disagree! I am content, having watched him close up, he was a cut above the rest at striking.

In the current Premier League, Aguero has to be the one but closely followed by Harry Kane. Not read through the whole thread but has Zlatan Ibrahimovic been mentioned?

Most of the International abroad players have been mentioned already and my particular favourites would be amongst them.

As much as I dislike the preening prick, Ronaldo Mk2. I reckon he would bear comparison with anyone stats wise.
