Can't think of a better player, and he had the ability to hang around in the air!

Didn't see any pre 88 players but Gareth Taylor was the best in the air I have seen. Jay Rod was very good and Austin the best at finding the net with his head.

Woody is a later day Lochead but Fletch was up there in a top two with Andy.

Steve Davis was good in the air. I remember him scoring a late equaliser at Oxford from the edge of the penalty area with his head.
Fletcher had a fair old leap on him and had to, as he wasn't the tallest.

Before my time and only played 25 times for us but Tommy Lawton has to be mentioned.
I always love this "hang in the air" stuff- as if gravity can be defied by certain special people. I think the perception is just down to great timing of the leap.

Agree about Austin, he was clinical in the air, but then he did have Trippier firing crosses over. Before that, Rocket Ron Futcher.

What about Claudie Lambie 'The Leap' ?

Re: Paul Fletcher - best header of a ball we've ever had?
Fletch was absolutely brilliant in the air, but Gareth Taylor and Austin both run him close in my book. My dad was taking me on in the 60's when Lockhead was at his peak, but I was bit too young to remember it properly.

Remember seeing him trouble the much taller Larry Lloyd ( Forest?) at Turf Moor. On one occasion craftily made a back for Lloyd who fell for it, jumped and was not amused as he hit the deck. The ball was irrelevant on this occasion!

Re: Paul Fletcher - best header of a ball we've ever had?
Yes and Hankin was actually a very good all round player too who is rarely mentioned or remembered on here, but he was fantastic for us for two/three seasons and when we lost him to Leeds it was a big blow and yet another push on the slide to eventual obscurity.CharlieinNewMexico wrote:Hankin was extremely good in the air

Andy Lochhead by a mile and at a time when there really were a lot of good headers of the ball around.

As mentioned Gareth Taylor was prolific in the air.
Think I recall him missing a penalty once and the bloke behind us joked that maybe he should have taken it with his head

Ray Hankin signed for Arsenal at one point but hardly played. He was a dirty bugger that would make Andy Carroll look saintly:

First goal I ever saw scored by a Burnley player was Paul Fletcher with his head.

Andre Gray
Seriously : Austin was very good scored a peach 1:11 in the link below:

Vokes is good, when he is fast enough to get to the ball

Hankin was good but Noble was better, I will always remember him scoring a hatrick v Newcastle and I’m sure they were all headers.

Re: Paul Fletcher - best header of a ball we've ever had?
I’d say Fletcher was as good as any player I’ve seen in the air. For a player only around 5’9” his technique was superb.

Frank Sinclair was always good for a laugh with his 50p head.

Is this a thread just about forwards...James Tarkowski is putting in a shift with his head.
