They lack the will to suspend a PL player for diving. They'll just keep using it against players in the lower leagues and turn a blind eye to it happening at the top level.

Had he played for Carlisle, he'd have had the maximum ban for that.

He won’t get a ban because he was touched. Clear dive though. Pope touched his right foot, watch what happens when his left foot touches the ground. I can guarantee the pundits will peddle the ‘there was contact’ line despite contact not being sufficient for a penalty to be given. Having said that, Pope was stupid for throwing himself into a challenge moments after making a fantastic save.

Don`t like the chap but Richard Keys is spot on. "Outrageous dive and because he plays for one of the big teams he will get away with it."

Contact is irrelevant. It is entirely possible, and mostly likely that the attacker seeks contact before diving. Reminds me of Newton’s 3rd law - equal and opposite force and all that, as in for Pope to have made contact with the attacker, equally the attacker made contact with Pope.

It was the classic Jaimie Vardy dive to win a pen. Go past the player, leave dangling leg in to instigate contact, then swan dive to the floor.

All those saying that he was "touched" should see how he cheats by leaving his leg in

If it is a foul, it's his right foot which has contact made with it, if I'm correct, he then rolls about holding his left shin

That much contact that he couldn't remember which foot or leg it was

Just seen that. On vieiwing that ive changed my mind. Pope was senseless for diving in like that. Shocking to give that penalty away. Lindegaard should start next game

Cheating git, we don't get a pen last week and that ones given.

I cannot wait for reviews to come in.

Big clubs will get beat more often as refs will not be able to cheat so easily.

I don't for a moment think City wouldn't have won, but it certainly shouldn't have been a penalty. Ric_C sums it up perfectly.

After watching that, it’s clearly a free kick to us because his right foot kicks Pope’s knee - I think Pope got his hand to the ball to be honest ;)

One of the worse pen decisions so far this season and possibly will be at the end.Truly awful call and a preposterous dive of truly epic proportions .Ref should have given benefit simply on the strength of the crazy leap.Contact was the player planting his foot by Pope .Though to be clear Pope made the corect decision for the dive attempt as a lose ball in space like that is critical .
Thought the ref had a stinker and the keepers early fumble and our pen shout were totally ignored

If that had been up the other end and hadn't been given, there would
now be multiple threads on here with people raging along
the lines of "how on earth can he not give that? Stonewaller."

Looking at it, it looks like popes knee lands on silvas foot and slows his momentum, I think its a penalty.

Blatant dive. Sad when players with that level of talent have to resort to cheating.

Great that cheating is not part of the Dyche/Burnley game plan.

Well I can't argue with that, but even that was a one off from Joey whilst under Dyche's stewardship.

But if it is, then (even from radio commentary) Man City's second should certainly have been disallowed. Otamendi surely touched Mee harder than Pope touched Silva.

The question is, when a Burnley player and a Man City player touch, should it always be a foul by the defender, or is the default a foul by the Burnley man? Or is the referee allowed to make a judgement on whose fault it was that two players came into contact? Or can we even go to the extreme position where two players touching doesn't automatically get deemed a foul?

Sean Dyche called this one right, as he usually does. Blatant foul by Hart, blatant dive by Silva.

Citeh don't need to cheat to win. They are good enough without that but, like they say in Wigan, that's the way the mop flops !!! ;)

Despite the minimal touch from Pope, it was cheating. I thought so at the time even though I was miles away and still do now having seen it on TV.
Two penalties gone against us now, for different reasons.

When you see the incident from another angle, it shows conclusively that there was no contact:

The "was there contact" line is constantly trotted out in these cases, but there's contact ALL THE TIME in football and every "contact" isn't a foul or necessitates someone flying 10 yards through the air like an Olympic gymnast! AND if the offended player deliberately initiates that contact then it DEFINITELY shouldn't be a foul. Francis Lee might be rather fatter than Silva, but the similarities are clearly there!

It's obvious now that contact in the penalty area equals a spot kick/free kick regardless if it's an actual foul or not. Like dsr quoted further up if these are the new rules the 2nd goal should have been disallowed because Otamendi was in contact with Mee when he headed the ball. We've been well and truly shafted twice in the last 2 weeks with decisions like this going against us and more than likely cost us an extra 2 points against West Ham. Would the penalty decision have made any difference yesterday, probably not,but it would have interesting going in 0-0 at half time.
Anyway Bernardo Silva is a diving,cheating.........

That's Francis Lee isn't it. In days when diving was unusual he used to do it regularly. He also scored a goal with his hand at Arsenal I believe.

He (Lee) was interviewed afterwards and actually described that goal as a "handy header"! And then smirked!! Perhaps he should now be (retrospectively) banned!! :)
