big money players we have sold in last 5 years

Post by happyclaret17 » Sun Oct 29, 2017 10:17 pm

how many of them would you have liked to have kept rather than having the money? personally I think most were good sales and getting good money for them was good business....maybe Austin could have done ok for us.

He's injury prone now though unfortunately, along with Ings.

Fletcher looked a good un, I wanted to keep him, and he's fallen by the wayside.

None of them have had any real consistent level of success after leaving us.

I'd have Trippier, Ings and Keane back in a heartbeat.

Trippier has been immense since leaving us. So it would have to be him. And I'd say, by a bloody long way!

Who is behind him? There can't be many... or any!

Unfortunately leg-eating microbes are having their way with Keane, so it does tend to leave Tripp’s, but I’d also have Ings back in a heartbeat if he was proved fit

Let's be fair, Ings has done bugger all since leaving Burnley. I think selling him was a very sound move - when we eventually got paid.

I'd only want to sign Ings back if it was initially on a month by month contract. Other than that, as a fan I'd say no thank you. I think a lot of people are going to be pleasantly surprised with Nahki Wells.

Trippier, Keane, Rodriguez and a fully fit Austin and Ings would definitely leave us with a very strong squad.

I think you also need to take into consideration that keeping a big player (at the time), would have meant not signing another big player later down the line. We've shown that we've done brilliantly well in the attacking department. By not selling a player would have meant the next big striker would never have arrived and who knows, meant we wouldn't now be where we are.

I think there's very few players - very few, over the last 5 years that I would have kept hold of, knowing what came after that sale. Like I say, Trippier might be the only one. Which goes to show how well the management and board have done.

Yes we had to sell Charlie and we did ok with money received to say he was injury prone.

Selling Charlie turned out to be a blessing in disguise,it allowed us to develop/discover the Vings partnership.

And we then went and sold Dings at the right time. To be fair, we've done bloody well with our transfers in and out over the last few years. Amazingly well really.

Was thinking about this earlier.

Fletcher - £6.48m
Rodriguez - £7.79m
Austin - £4.19m
Shackell - £3.78
Ings - £8m
Tripper - £4.41m
Gray - £18.36m
Keane - £25.65m

Prices taken from transermarkt online.

Considering the progress of those other players since leaving us I'd say the money has been far more helpful than their potential contribution.

When Burnley stop doing good business in both directions we really should start to worry.

But you could just as easily say we're going in the right direction - on and off the field. And if anything, we could increase our % turnover and start earning more money. We clearly know how to sign forwards. We clearly know how to get good managers. And we clearly know when to buy and when to sell.

If anything, we're more likely to keep on increasing in all aspects than stop.

It still feels like we did after the palava of waiting for Liverpool's money. It ended up being a blessing.

The reality is we will always be a selling club, whether for fiscal reasons, or the fact players want to move on, ala Keane and Gray, the jury is still out if selling the latter two was correct or not,but of the rest on that list only Tripps could claim to have improved his career.Ideally we will develop one or two youth players over the next few years,if we can become a solid mid-table side we may be able to give more young players first team opportunities, this could potentially save us tens of millions in transfer fees and other outgoings i.e wages.

Keane, Trippier, Rodriguez, Austin (if fit) and Ings (if fit) would improve our squad and arguably our first team.

Heard from a good source that Ings is likely to go to Newcastle in Jan.
