What a pretentious prick.
What a pretentious prick.
Re: Newcastle fans wrecking Gisburn
People in the North East don't travel much and have little or no concept of the outside world, hence the Hartlepool people hanging a monkey that was washed ashore in the early 19th century assuming it to be a frenchman spying, genetically they have passed this gene down and the Newcastle people assumed the pumpkins were relations of their sworn mackem enemy Phil Brown.

I've been in pubs with landlords like that. We used to stop at one regularly for games in West Midlands until they got a landlord fitting into that category. We've not been since.Foshiznik wrote:"“We are an upmarket pub but what can you do when three coaches of football fans turn up?"

Good for you. I live in Bristol so have met many people who would fit that category!ClaretTony wrote:I've been in pubs with landlords like that. We used to stop at one regularly for games in West Midlands until they got a landlord fitting into that category. We've not been since.

Some pubs aren't ideal for football fans. Can't see the problem. The fans should research the type of pubs that can and want to accommodate them.

Agreed, but football fans and upmarket aren't automatically exclusive and to think so makes the person at best, sound like a pretentious prick. At worst, a <insert something even worse>Blackrod wrote:Some pubs aren't ideal for football fans. Can't see the problem. Re: Newcastle fans wrecking Gisburn
So let me get this right, a landlord would turn away 150 punters because he has to spend an hour cleaning up after them. 150 x 2 pints each is what these days (pretentious pub so £4/pint) over a grand in beer for an hour clean up. Shouldn’t be in business if he turns away that sort of custom.

no, you're wrong, if adults can't stop off for a pint without behaving like idiots then it's appalling that anyone could defend their behaviour.
Probably local kids halloween displays needlessly wrecked as well as the broken bottles and ape like antics inside the pub itself.

Landlord said " If they had stayed any longer we would have called the police ourselves" Reads like " I was willing to put up with a bit of rowdiness to keep the till ringing"
Also "swinging on lampshades.." Really?

Re: Newcastle fans wrecking Gisburn
I can't read the article but there are two sides to this:
1. Yes that quote from the landlord does make him sound pretensious
2. BUT ... did whoever arranged the trip phone to let the pub know they were arriving? If I head down the pub with 2 or 3 mates it's normally safe to turn up unannounced. If I'm organising 3 coaches full of football fans I'd arrange in advance with somewhere that could accommodate us.
If they turned up unannounced in 3 coaches expecting to get any semblance of normal service they're ignorant.

I agree that adults should behave, but I bet it was only a few idiots there, probably only a slight increase on the average for society. He should have called the police if people were being stupid, but like it’s been said above he wanted to keep the tills ringingWile E Coyote wrote:no, you're wrong, if adults can't stop off for a pint without behaving like idiots then it's appalling that anyone could defend their behaviour.

From my memory of this pub it would be pretty obvious as soon as you walk through the door that it is not suitable for 3 coach loads of football fans. The landlord didn't turn them away though probably to do with the till as mentioned above.

I work here as a Potwasher - I was on the match that night so didn't see it, but the first guy who was quoted (Steve) didn't seem to mind it that much as he's a massive football fan. Definitely think the Lancs Telegraph have made him look a lot more pretentious than he is, definitely didn't come across in the manner he did

Landlord looking for publicity.... Telegraph looking for a sensation.... I suspect very little in it.

Re: Newcastle fans wrecking Gisburn
As a landlord myself I’d like to think as mentioned above that the organiser of these coaches would ring in advance allowing the landlord to have the heads up, get more beer in & potentially put extra bar staff on to accommodate 150 drinkers. I’m pretty sure Leisure does. This Chap, like every landlord will have wanted the till ringing, that’s his salary after all. Screams shocking organisation to me and likely that out of 150 football fans your bound to get some morons who enjoy damaging stuff. Shame really

Particularly if they have to wait a very long time to be served ... because their coach organiser hadn't taken the time to arrange things with the pub beforehand and there weren't enough staff on.JamesSherbourne wrote:Screams shocking organisation to me and likely that out of 150 football fans your bound to get some morons who enjoy damaging stuff. I can't imagine had I booked a table that evening. These louts are the scourge of society. They would have certainly spoiled my smoked duck starter.

nobody except one lad who works there knows the landlord, and yet look at all the claptrap spoken about someone they dont know based on one article.
That one person who does know him says he is a footie fan, not some stuck up snob.

Rumours going round that Gisburn have got a squad together and will be going to the return match at Newcastle intent on revenge.
One member has claimed they will use threatening language like 'oh my gosh' to intimidate locals and leave empty twix wrappers everywhere as a sign of there wealth.

Re: Newcastle fans wrecking Gisburn
I went for Sunday lunch there a few weeks ago, it's definitely not an upmarket pub and my experience was ruined by a family who allowed their young children to run around the pub shouting and screaming and banging into tables, with no interference from the landlord. One couple walked out, having ordered food but then changed their minds due to the disturbance. I would have rather had the banter with the football fans!
