It's all subjective though isn't it? First 2 Oasis albums were up there with the best, then it went downhill from there imo.
One band I thought were on a par were The Verve, Urban Hymns was sublime.

Despite not being a particularly good singer, his nasal whining Manc twang and his faux ‘ard man image, they did churn out a few decent songs.

My son played oasis to death when he was at home.
Initially I wasn't keen on them but they gradually grew on me to the point where I listen to them quite regularly myself now.
Love this live Slade cover...far better than Noddy screaming.

Apart from knowing certain bands that my son listened to I haven't really kept up with the music/chart scene for 25 years.
Apart from my favourite bands that were already established.
Here's one from The Cure from 1992

Erm, now I know this is a personal and subjective thing, but has somebody really said 'Crowded house'.
That's a thousand yard stare/ tumbleweed moment if ever I saw one.
(I'm currently and annoyingly humming 'always take the weather with you' in my head as I write this).

You may have got the wrong end of the stick there.
I've seen them twice, one of those was knebworth in 96. I've got box sets, limited edition vinyls and I own every album they produced as a band.
Not sure how you came to the conclusion I think they put **** music out from my short comment

Anyway on the plus side you've got me listening to Oasis for the first time in years.

My fav new Ashcroft song. Was at this gig. I was on the top mezzenine whatever stood next to the guy with a camera with a long pole from the side pointing it straight down the middle.
Had a great day drinking Sainsbury's Local stella, eating KFC Zinger Burgers (or whatever the ****) on Shepherds Bush common or whatever before going into the O2 Empire.

Re: Bands that were better than Oasis in the 90's
This is a phenomenon sort of similar to Stockholm syndrome. Here's a study into how your familiarity with a piece of music relates to your emotional response to that music.Dazzler wrote:My son played oasis to death when he was at home.

http://journals.plos.org/plosone/articl ... ne.0027241" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This is often called the mere-exposure effect. Familiarity plays a crucial role in how much you enjoy a song and repeated exposure to a song-even one you initially dislike-can have a significant observable effect on your emotional response to that song. Exposure to a familiar song activates the brain's reward centre more than an unfamiliar song, but not more than an unfamiliar song within a style of music you usually enjoy.
Here, as we can see, is scientific evidence as to why otherwise decent people can admit, in public, and without shame, to enjoying derivative, objectively uninteresting children's music. My advice would be that if you hear a song you dislike, find a way to never have to listen to Oasis ever again. It's a shame this study was published in 2011 and not the mid 90's. This awareness could have saved millions of people from a lifetime of poor taste and bad decisions.
I hate Oasis.

Pictures Of You is, for me, the greatest song ever written. It’s from 1989 though! (Released as a single in early 1990)Dazzler wrote:Apart from knowing certain bands that my son listened to I haven't really kept up with the music/chart scene for 25 years.

According to a few experts on here their music won't stand the test of time
As for better bands, they had a number of equals at the time.
Verve, Blur, Pulp, Shed Seven, Suede to name a few.
I'm just glad to have been around when they were all releasing music.
Slide Away is my absolute favourite Oasis song.

Re: Bands that were better than Oasis in the 90's
It's hard to find anyone better than Oasis in the 90s. People can say they went downhill (I'd say that was more in the noughties) but if you're just talking about the 90s they're very hard to beat.
Definitely Maybe and What's The Story (Morning Glory) have and will stand the test of time. Be Here Now was a good album hiding inside an over-produced one!! If they'd taken it down a notch and trimmed a minute or so off most songs it would have been great. I know that's a ridiculous thing to say but I find the album is more an advert for their drug excesses at the time. Noel just wanted to put layer after layer after layer of guitars on every track!!
The only other album released in the 90s was The Masterplan, which ironically was a much better album than Be Here Now and highlighted how many great songs they wrote in the early years.
One band that hasn't been mentioned on this thread so far, apart from the OP link, is The Charlatans. The 90s were also their peak. They had 6 albums released in the 90s, peaking with the self-titled The Charlatans in 95, Tellin' Stories in 97 and Us and Us Only in 99. For that 4 or 5 year period they were unbelievable IMO.

Super Furry Animals
Radiohead
Teenage Fanclub
Pulp
Primal Scream
Spiritualized
Jesus & Mary Chain
Manic Street Preachers
The Charlatans
James
The Wedding Present
The Verve
I get the feeling this thread is only intended for guitar bands but I'm going to throw Underworld and Orbital in there.

Oasis were superb back in the day but they weren't anywhere near the pinnacle of being the best band around.
You can't even put Oasis in the same breath as the likes of Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chilli peppers, Foo Fighters, etc etc
