Just a mention for Joey Morton, metalwork, a fine gentleman who taught me how to make a trowel with a heat treated tang.

Habergham early 00's here....absolutely loved the place and very rarely came across any teacher that I didnt like.
Also had the pleasure of working alongside Mr Emmett (Chemistry) at Asda a few years ago. Was sad that they didnt accomodate him when the changes happened but he still maintained his sense of humour and positive outlook on life.

Was that Bob Emmett? I think he was a student there when I was, though he was a year or so above.

I remember being called in by Ron Parry to his "career office" which I think used to be the broom cupboard. It turned out he'd been standing behind me on the Longside and suggested I used calmer language and gestures or he'd be having a word with my dad.

The main thing I remember about my time at BGS is that we were lads and those brown-knickered lovelies at The Highie on Kiddrow Lane were girls.
Bit different now.

Belly was defo the most terrorised teacher. We had him skiving from lessons and hiding in the library. One time Pip Flynn went and reported him to The Boss and escorted him to his hiding place and Belly was chewing his lip, exclaiming "you must help me!". Another time he entered the room to be met by the chanting of "attack, attack"and was bombarded by Tag's cardboard model of a dodecahaedron, a lit banger and a water bomb.
Great times!

Thankfully, as a mathematician, I wasn't lumbered with the maths teaching of Belly although I did have Tag Fraser for a while (where did the Tag come from?). I was very fortunate that I was taught by Stokes & Jennings.basil6345789 wrote:Belly was defo the most terrorised teacher. We had him skiving from lessons and hiding in the library. Re: Burnley Grammar School/Habergham High School
I really enjoy reading the occasional threads on BGS. I was 76-82 vintage. Can't remember a bad day. Great footy, great cricket, great mates, great teachers, great craich, great memories......Biol Bill Slater, Stevie Cool, Vic 'ta geule' Stott, Bertie Yoghurt, Twang the lab technician, Contract 3 bus, fag behind the gym wall, Lippy Smith, Pugwash, "Hey Cookie, leave them kids alone!", High School at lunchtime , Percy Oddball, Jimmy Livesey, and the best of all for me was Dave Denson, a thoroughly great bloke and a real influence on me personally. I think it's probably the greatest mark of respect for Dave that we never had a derogatory nickname for him that I can recall!! Although I'm sure I'll be corrected.
Re: Burnley Grammar School/Habergham High School
Mr Johnson was also nicknamed 'Tiv by us in the 6th form being a shortened form of contraceptive which of course has the slang name Johnny.

Re: Burnley Grammar School/Habergham High School
I had a couple of maths lessons with 'Teapot' Jennings but got lumbered with Ricky Bennet. Every lesson was a riot; once, by the time he got us settled down, he said "right, today we are..." Just as the end bell went. IIRC, the mock 0 level pass mark for his students was about 20%. Most failed. Happy days!ClaretTony wrote:Thankfully, as a mathematician, I wasn't lumbered with the maths teaching of Belly although I did have Tag Fraser for a while (where did the Tag come from?). Re: Burnley Grammar School/Habergham High School
I was one of those miscreants and insurgents from pretty early on ( 3 days into my 1st year I was wrongly dragged out of class by no other than Nobby Stokes for alleged bullying and given four across the backside). I spent 5 years rebelling against everything from that point on! Didn't do me any harm though and learnt a lot of life lessons whilst there. Minds play tricks with memories but wasn't Oscar 'owned' by a geography teacher whose name escapes me. He used to keep various versions in a bath of linseed oil to keep the sole nice and supple. His 'run up' was famous as he used to start it from the cloakrooms opposite! I remember Clayton! Bit of a goatee beard going on and a definite sociopath! I also remember being the source of much misery for Taffy Hughes ( my main role was to get him from his usual fit of apoplexy to getting him to laugh) and Hoss Cartwright. Me and a lad called Woody would haunt his every footstep shouting "Hoss" from every corner. Think the poor bugger eventually had some sort of breakdown.Man of Kent wrote:Violence from the teachers was a common feature at BGS. Most of the time, we fully deserved it because the school boasted some highly-educated and intelligent miscreants and insurgents who misbehaved just as much as those from the comprehensives. I think we merited the violence most of the time. Never did me any harm and we always respected those teachers who were quick to use the cane, strap, plimsoll or giant board ruler. Pacifist teachers were very quickly broken if they showed any weakness or reluctance to resort to physical retribution on the bad kids. A regular dealer of corporal punishment, sometimes with his fists, was a bloke called Clayton and you messed with him at your peril.

Agree with you recall Lakesider: Oscar was the punishment tool of Geog teacher Mr Spencer. I can't remember being on the receiving end of that- I was pretty good at Geog and took it to A level.

Re: Burnley Grammar School/Habergham High School
Bill Gray (French)was terrible. Taught me for three years and after doing particularly bad in a test had to ask who I was as we queued up outside the classroom. He then took me inside and beat me - fists to the head and body whilst pushing me into the wall witnessed by those who could see through the glass panel that was by the doors - nobody could believe what they had just seen. He sat me at the front and said he would be on my case for the rest of the term. I never went to another class and he didn't even notice. Incompetent, violent and would be sacked today. Needless to say I didn't pass O level French but it did become the only exam I ever failed.

Re: Burnley Grammar School/Habergham High School
Bob Emmett in post 111 was probably Steve Emmett, I took the bus to school with him and I know he did end up teaching at bgs. He was captain of the 1st XI in 1964/65 the year we beat Martin Dobsons Clitheroe rgs 7-0.
As for Tag Fraser, I also heard it was from trig, algebra and geometry when I was at school but a few years later when doing teacher training I spent a term teaching there (did I teach CT?), it may have been Tag himself who told me his nickname arose because a few years earlier a French teacher always issued his class with a notebook in which he made them write down and learn a list of 'tag phrases'.
As for maths teachers Stokes was the best I ever knew, some years later as a maths teacher myself I was amazed to hear a colleague say that the best teacher he ever had was Noel Stokes at Wolverhampton G S

Re: Burnley Grammar School/Habergham High School
From scanning this everyone seems very happy at BGS - for my part I had easily passed the 11+ but would have started in 1982 so with it closing in 1981 a grammar wasn't an option in my catchment. I lived 100 metres the Burnley side of the boundary in Simonstone so Clitheroe wasn't an option either. I ended up going to a Blackburn comp.
It was a long battle going through the comp system, missing uni and ending up as a qualified accountant. I've often wondered what would have happened to me if BGS hadn't shut or we'd lived in Read not Simonstone. Probably nothing different

Just had a read of this old thread to bring back some memories.
One update - Bernie Grime died three years ago next week at the age of 80. I believe he died with Covid.
I can’t imagine that there will be many of my old teachers still alive given I’m 72.

The big yellow UFO was the lower sixth common room when I attended. It was on the grass area outside Joey Morton’s metalwork shop. As for Gordon Alison ( who made my life hell in his Chemistry “ lessons “ ), I saw him a few years later I left (1977), in Skippers Ford dealership in Burnley, as I picked up my XR3i, whilst he looked at a Fiesta. I remember reading through this thread. Feels like it was only a few months ago, not either side of 7 years.
Re: Burnley Grammar School/Habergham High School
Gordon is my wife’s uncle. Still going strong and only retired from the family coal business a couple of years ago which. He retired from teaching shortly after Habergham closed in the Building Schools for the Future project.

Re: Burnley Grammar School/Habergham High School
Steve Whitaker was a computer studies teacher at Habergham in my time there and when I moved to the 6th form he was my form tutor and taught Pure Maths. Unfortunately Mel Saunders was the Statistics teacher and it was his shocking teaching methods and impatience at actually explaining things that caused me to quit the subject. I was fortunate to have avoided him in my 5 years at Habergham.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Mar 02, 2024 9:47 pmSteve Whitaker was a couple of years younger than me and that was his dad at Barden
This shows a computer studies class in the mid 90s and Steve Whitaker can be seen from 6:50 onwards.

Mel Saunders was just a bully, simply a bully. Nothing else. As a “teacher “, he was stealing a living. He never picked on me personally, but I saw him turn classmates into quivering wrecks, and I bet most of them turned out to be better people than he could ever have dreamed of becoming. Absolute ars****e.
