Dean Marney- today
Dean Marney- today
My wife and I bumped into him this morning in the Trafford Centre, he mentioned he's had one 45 min and two 90 min games and he's feeling good, he's hoping he can push for a first team group place in the next 4/6 weeks. My goodness what a lean and fit young man he looks. He was an absolute pleasure to talk to. He made my wife's day anyway

Always interested in the details of how these things happen. Did you start with a polite "Hello, are you Dean Marney?" Did the wife go "alright Deano" etc etc

Did you have to hold the wife back to stop her throwing herself at him?

My wife and I once saw Sam Vokes in Burnley Tesco (when he was on crutches) she proceeded to chat him up whilst I just stood star struck

I've nothing against Dean Marney he has been great for us but if we get to a point where he is getting in our team next season then we will have gone backwards. This season maybe a couple of cameos at to help see games out at best.

We were in the posh lounge in Liverpool airport a few years back and Barry Kilby came in. I pointed him out to my wife, I'm the shy reserved type so my wife says to him as he walked past, would you have your photo taken with a lifelong Claret? As a fellow lifelong claret he said it would not be a problem and then stayed for a chat after. Top bloke.
I think Dean Marney once undertook me on the A56 once, I wasn't bothered!

The only undertaking being done if it was Marney would have been from your funeral director. Marney would have driven straight through your car.NL Claret wrote: I think Dean Marney once undertook me on the A56 once, I wasn't bothered!

Except the previous two seasons we've had in the prem, when Deano got injured our form severely deteriorated - especially the first Dyche season.
Does the dirty work exceptionally well.
The home game which he scored in against City he was outstanding, yes I know that we did lose that game

Re: Dean Marney- today
Marney got his first full 90 minutes on Monday this week. From the games I’ve seen, he’s clearly looked stronger and better in each one.

No doubt CC he has been unlucky and I'm not saying he hasn't been fantastic he clearly has but at his age you have to wonder how long he has left. I think our midfield has moved on considerably since his injury unfortunately for him. What I will say is had he not got injured in 2014 I think we would have stayed up and last season I think we would have finished higher.

Marney is an absolute warrior.
And he can cut it at this level...no question...you'd be a fool to write him off...he could be my wing man in a scrap anytime.

An excellent Brian Laws signing, just as Jack Cork was.

This just unnecessarily perpetuates the myth that Burnley fans didn't like certain players just because they were signed by Brian Laws. It's never been true.jdrobbo wrote:An excellent Brian Laws signing, just as Jack Cork was.

Re: Dean Marney- today
We will score more goals with Dean Marney on the pitch. He'll protect the back four and simply give the ball to Cork and Defour to get on with what they're best at.
Back five plus;
JGB, Defour, Marney, Cork, Brady
Wood.

I disagree, Marney has a lot to offer providing he's back to how he was playing before the injury.gandhisflipflop wrote:I've nothing against Dean Marney he has been great for us but if we get to a point where he is getting in our team next season then we will have gone backwards. I’m sure the weeks out will have made Marney eager to play with passion and determination. Sounds like a Burnley player to me!

Re: Dean Marney- today
I do think he has a role to play this season. That I don't doubt. IMO coming on with 30 mins to go to give us that extra energy in games to see them out. I think we should be getting better players in next summer*

Will be a better option off the bench than Westwood, and he hasn't done much wrong

I once saw Chris McCann at the Trafford Centre and his shopping wasn’t a patch on Dean’s.

Could you take ownership on a day by day basis?martin_p wrote:Changed the thread title to avoid confusion.
It could get quite confusing otherwise.

Not sure I could commit to that. Happy to be part of some sort of rota though.Bordeauxclaret wrote:Could you take ownership on a day by day basis?

Re: Dean Marney- today
Probably because he was decidedly average until Dyche came and when Dave Jones signed for us.NL Claret wrote:Some posters on here took a while to warm to Dean Marney, especially the one who writes dead long posts.
Since then Deano has enjoyed the best spell of his career and played a massive part in our promotions.
I think it will be hard for him to break back into the team - and right now getting on the bench looks a challenge. However we have a lot of games coming up in the next 6 weeks and we have a few players who have recently picked up injuries (Ward, Wood, Vokes, Defour, Hendrick). Many of these are playing on in big games for their countries.
When injuries and suspensions both kick in we are going to need the likes of Deano, Westwood, Taylor and Wells. These 4 players cost not far off £20m so it's not like we are bringing in donkeys !

Just having Deano back on the training pitch will give the whole squad a lift, just like a new quality signing, it will make the ever presents up their game just that bit more.
Re: Dean Marney- today
Good to see him working his way back to the first team squad. Good luck.

Someone mentioned Barry Kilby further up. We were queuing for the tube at Upton Park station after losing to West Ham the season Duff was sent off. I suddenly realised it was Barry standing in the queue behind us and we had a right good natter. Absolutely great bloke with no pretensions at all.

I'd pick a fit Dean Marney over the Jeff Hendrick we're currently seeing in a heartbeat.

Defour is a better player than Hendrick. He would provide more if his game was concentrated on offensive play rather than the amount of defensive work he's currently having to do. Dean's absence from the line up is why Defour is having to play like this.ZizkovClaret wrote:Marney over Hendrick? f**k me is it strong stuff they serve around your way?

Yes. He's been no better than average in any game this season and been poor a few times. I also really value Dean Marney's contribution.JPS71 wrote:The Jeff Hendrick who as already scored 2 goals this season

Shame about the injury, Marney has been an excellent signing over the years as well as a model professional footballer
