New Telly
Feel like treating myself.
Rather than going wandering round the aisles until I get pounced on - are there any particular makes that stand out (always think the Samsung in the White Bear, Barrowford is a cracking picture). Any particular spec to be aiming for?
Ta in advance of any suggestions.

Re: New Telly
Samsung, Sony are two of the main ones.
LG up there too.
4k TVs are the current top models, along with Oleg, but it's down to budget and preference.
Are you a gamer?
I read a really good article about gaming with the new Xbox One X and the need for TVs with certain Frames per seconds rate.
I'm upgrading after Xmas to a 4k and I'll have to take the FPS rate into consideration.

Re: New Telly
4k appears to be gathering momentum now so ensure you have that at least.
Motion control was much better on the Sony / Samsung / Panasonic etc over LG when I got my last one as watching sports that was a factor.
Buy from a decent department store who both price match and offer excellent guarantees and aftercare. John Lewis have replaced one for me before today - it was over 2 years old and as they couldn't do like for like I still was able to go shopping for a fresh one at same cost as the model that had a minor fault.

Re: New Telly
What size can you fit max?
What are you currently using?
Do you need good viewing angles at the side?
Still watch anything that isn't HD like normal non HD tv channels?
Anything UHD or HDR?
How close can you view the t.v.?
What are you currently using?
Lots to ask yourself now in the era of UHD tv's..and lots about older models that can still be better than ones bought today.
I help (or try to) lots of people looking to buy on the avforums so feel free to have a read some of my guides: https://www.avforums.com/threads/my-lin ... s.2116485/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This section: https://www.avforums.com/forums/which-t ... i-buy.367/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; has many a thread with people's questions looking to upgrade.

Re: New Telly
I upgraded from a 26” LG to a 50” Panasonic 50DX700 last year. It wasn’t an easy decision as it was a fairly decent purchase.
My final choice was between a Panasonic and an LG, it all came down to the fact that the Panasonic man was in the shop.
I have no complaints so far after a year, the picture is great and the quality is still superb.
I got mine from John Lewis, their guarantees are second to none as is their customer service (in my experience) in replacing a faulty item.

Re: New Telly
Black Friday will soon be upon us if you have decided what you want by then.
Re: New Telly
I know it’s not the most practical but I had a room at home that was a glorified storeroom. I’ve looked at it for ages wondering what to do with it and finally decided to make it into a home cinema, largely as a result of a post on here back in the summer.
I’ve hard wired in 5.1 surround sound into the ceiling, got a second hand Optoma 1080p projector, fixed a manual pull down screen and the whole thing has cost about £600. The end result is a system that has a screen size of about 80’’ and a genuine cinema feel. Ok it’s not what we use for general telly watching but the kids have a PS4 in there and it gets used a lot more than even I anticipated.
It’s worth doing if you can justify the room and provides far more bang for your buck than any telly

Re: New Telly
I’ve just bought a 43” Sony Bravia 4K UHD from John Lewis for £550. Not bad value given 30 years ago I paid £200 more for a 28” Sony Trinitron.
Fairly happy with it. Planet Earth II was lovely to watch on it. Sadly it still shows Xfactor and Ant & Dec in the jungle.

Re: New Telly
By far the best TV's available today are OLED 4K HDR TV's. Much deeper blacks and less blockiness on dark backgrounds than traditonal LED TV's. As opposed to backlighting each pixel is lit indidually and gives better contrast.
Depending on the size you're after these are two good deals. Virtually identical, just different stands basically.

Re: New Telly
I got a sony bravia smart tv 4k (smarter than me LOL) in January very pleased with it 49'' and as I got it from John Lewis got free delivery and 5 yr guarantee £649 (£150 off at the time but did look at Samsung and was impressed with that too.) Had a bit of a problem on setting it up with my new sky q box and ended up talking to Sony who took control of the tv through my mobile phone and sorted it all out (turned out to be a problem on the new dish) any how he sorted it out.
Have multi room with panasonic tv 42'' HD only and great picture. it is in our conservatory so gives me a place to go or banish others depending on what I/ we are watching.
Given Black friday coming up id get to JL check what you want and then buy on black friday

Re: New Telly
Bought myself a Samsung QLED 55" a couple of months ago. Does the job.
Re: New Telly
One thing I'd say is don't worry too much about the smart TV element. Chances are that even if it isn't a bit clunky now it will be in a few years and missing the apps you want, etc.
Much better to buy the tv based on the picture quality and then add something like a Fire stick or Chromecast for the smart tv functionality. Generally a smoother, better supported interface.

Re: New Telly
Samsung, LG and Toshiba are a good mix between value and quality. My personal preference for electical stuff is to pay that tiny bit extra for Panasonic or Sony. Can't really go wrong with any of them.

Where did you manage to pick up the 2nd hand projector? I'm in need of upgrading my poor one.
Re: New Telly
eBay - there’s loads, bit of a gamble I suppose but even if you bought a brand new one, you’d only pay the price of a middling telly
