Not so much soundtrack as such as I'd call it but the music in gladiator was class.

First 3 that instantly came to my head:

Road to Perdition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AS3FXKCxDL4

Interstellar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBfk37Fa3H0

Hook: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkdqePJA1N4

Coincidentally all at different stages in my life. If I put thought into it there would be waaay too many to list, from Gladiator, Avatar, Jurasic Park, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, LOTR etc etc etc

Easy Rider.
Woodstock (if that counts given it's basically a filmed festival).
2001 Space Odyssey was pretty good.

The Last of the Mohicans

The Mission
Very atmospheric soundtracks and both visually stunning with great acting and strong storylines.

Reminded of this one recently with the death of Harry Dean Stanton: Paris, Texas
Great atmospheric guitar playing by Ry Cooder,
The whole film is more than a bit sad but terrific performances by the main characters and the music fits so well.

I got into a few bands via that film. I bought "Stereophonic Steppenwolf" LP after seeing that film (68/9?), it's got the 2 tracks you mention on there, still got it but don't have a functioning record deck any longer.

Almost Famous - excellent early seventies soundtrack. Bizarrely though, the opening song on the soundtrack is by Alvin & The Chipmunks!

Grosse Pointe Blank is another good one if you prefer 80s music

In the comments, someone describes it as 'a masterpiece'.

I saw the remake, which was good, haven't seen the original which featured Lester Bangs.

American Graffiti has to be up there. Superb soundtrack to a film. 'That'll be the Day' was a top album and film as well

When I was at school it was all about the Matrix soundtrack, and to a lesser extent the Spawn soundtrack.

Recently we enjoyed Baby Driver for its soundtrack, and the Spotify playlist for it gets played regularly round the house.

Tarantino always nails it with the music for his films.

I don't think think Zimmer has ever done a bad soundtrack

Even when the film stinks, his soundtracks stand out.

Better add Dunkirk to the list as well, its a fantastic soundtrack

There's two categories within this - films that had a score written for them and those that had a soundtrack of already existing songs.

Another one for the Good, the Bad & the Ugly.

Lock Stock was good, as was Trainspotting.
Vanishing Point has become a cult classic for film and soundtrack, haven't seen the remake, probably naff.

Almost Famous was released in 2001 but is set, mostly, in 1973. Lester Bangs was played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. I agree with you on American Graffiti and "That'll be the day" is an underrated classic - along with "Slade in Flame"
