Lineker... where do you stand ?

Post by Clarets4me » Sun Nov 19, 2017 12:39 am

Gary Lineker seems to divide people I know, he seems to be a Marmite sort of character....

a) Much loved national treasure, in the Des Lynam/David Coleman mould, sends himself up on those adverts, never booked as a player and all those goals, lovely host on MOTD, remember how he looked after Gazza at Italia 90...etc...

b) Deserted his childhood sweetheart & married a lingerie model, tax dodging, crisp-peddling pratt, did you notice how none of his family were on " Who do you think you are ? " family history programme, & now he's taken FIFA's shilling to do the World Cup draw ? Hypocrite !

Where do you stand ??

As a presenter I think he’s very good. As a bloke he is, by many accounts, an arrogant prick.

An already very wealthy man, greedy enough to want to fill his pockets even further by marketing fat and salt laden junk food to gullible low income families.

Tries to come across as Mr Nice Guy on TV but by all accounts not a very nice bloke off screen.

Personally I think he's a wrong un - seems highly motivated by money and pound to a penny he will have been involved in many complex tax avoidance schemes (like many others)

Despite being a wrong un he does seem decent at his job - but he ain't no Jeff Stelling !

After AGAIN bringing SD up Neville said that if he was Dyche he wouldn't move on, Linekar dismissed him quickly by saying fair enough before moving swiftly on. B for me.

As a player: very good career over a period with England & some big clubs, always likely to knock one in. 8/10
As a pundit: not the greatest but a long way off the worst, he's got some talent with the gab but overestimates himself sometimes - 7/10
As a person: virtue signaller but involved in tax avoidance, advertising junk food & other venal stuff (does he really need all that extra £?) 4/10

I don't have a problem with celebrities using the fact they have lots of people interested in their opinions having them and sharing them.

That kind of thing is an essential part of any democracy, and should be encouraged.

Lineker being ripped into by the usual cretins on here - and Piers Morgan - so he's gone up in my estimation on that basis alone.

Piers Morgan is down there with the lowest of the low - nobody is saying Lineker is anywhere his level.

Opinion pretty split on Lineker - so that makes anyone who doesn't like him a "cretin" does it ?

I loved him as a player.
Like him as a pundit.
Couldn't give a toss about his personal life.
He does seem to cling on to SD leaving though. Anyone would think he'd put his life savings on him going, he looks that desperate.

For all those that are saying he is a tax cheat, don’t believe everything the papers say on this matter.
Using offshore accounts to purchase property doesn’t automatically equate to tax avoidance and the explanations he has given are perfectly plausible and reasonable.
Not saying he doesn’t but just because the paper says so, doesn’t make it so.

Ok as a presenter but always plays it safe a bit like when he was as a player. As for Piers Morgan he is a complete pr*ck who is desperate to be relevant to people who have more fame. I'm surprised he hasn't been lamped yet.

Very easy these days to work someone out.

“Too many tweets make a two hat”

Although given the lack of tweets by the two hat who said that, I suppose there are exceptions.

Before Lineker started tweeting he wasn’t such a marmite figure.

Don't dislike him on MotD to be honest as a person.... there are more than a few skeletons. I don't think we can judge from this range. It was kept very quiet when his brother was sent down for drug dealing through the Lineker pubs, in which he was a major investor... which would impact on his being a fit character for TV IF he was involved to any further level. But like I say we cannot really judge on the titbits we receive.... not that tht will stop folk making up their own minds on him. As for the crisp adverts - at first I liked him sending himself up... but its now become a tired cash cow.

Fat isn't actually bad for you... Salt is though, the carbs in Walkers are also worse for you than the fats.

Most of the fat in Walkers is mono-unsaturated and polyunsaturated. The former being what makes the Mediterranean diet good for your heart and the latter being an essential fat that the body can't produce.

Why should I be offended on Lineker's behalf - I'm sure a few jealous bell-ends' snipes won't worry him too much.
I don't think he's too bad as a presenter and as for his tax, well I guess there's quite a few of us hire an expert to keep our tax bills down.
Makes sense.

Ok for me.
Great player who actually did do the business on the pitch.
Not some arse like a lot of them who did the Jack of F all.
