And yet GDP growth is getting ever lower and is forecast to drop even more (lowest in the past 30 years or so). Something doesn't quite tally.

Re: More post brexit referendum good news!!!!
Well I haven't quite described anything, really, but considering you brought it up it's fair to say that the EU referendum vote was one of those instances where democracy slips into demagoguery. A functioning democracy assumes an informed electorate. This has been a valid criticism of democracy going right back to ancient Greece and the disastrous Sicilian expedition.Right_winger wrote:Wait a minute, haven't you just described democracy? Re: More post brexit referendum good news!!!!
Unless I am mistaken that graph of Lancasters won ‘Geek Of The Week’ on Peston On Sunday.
I remember having a debate about it with a guy from the FT.
It is more depressing evidence I am turning into a leftie.
The people who made the graph are implying that the folk who live in those poor communities are taking part in an act of self harm by voting Leave. My sense is that people deserve more credit.
The Localis research suggests that workers in those areas are vulnerable to automation, skills shortages and migrant worker shortfalls.
I would argue that migrant workers leaving will push up wages, putting more pressure on companies but those workers know what they are doing. I would also argue that automation is best implemented with more local decision making, by strengthening national government and rolling out more powers to local government. Then workers will be protected from excessive cost cutting.
Agree or disagree, as usual it is condescending in the extreme to imply people don’t know what they are voting for. I have come to realise that for these people, the status quo doesn’t work, and they are entitled to try something different. The more they are insulted for that choice, the fiercer they will dig their heels in.

I'm not disagreeing with any of your last paragraph. IT does our cause no favours however daft the post by bfcboyo was, but the evidence is screaming at everyone that our part of the world is going to take a hit, and shouting at people like me about remoaning and talking Britain down is not going to change that one iota.
The scenario you've outlined in the rest of your post is a Brexiteers wet dream though, and not based on anything other than wishful thinking sadly.

What Remoaners like Lancaster claret (aka the UTC funeral director) don't seem to be able to accept is. That The British proletariat have had 40 odd years to judge whether or not membership of the EU has benefited them, their towns and their their country. And more of the same is not good enough.
Combine that with confusing education with common sense and intelligence. And that's why he and his ilk come across as sneering, supercilious, pseudo intellectuals who portray themselves as intellectual behemoths.
Despite coming across as a poor man's James Obrian. He's probably not a bad bloke.....

So exactly how will turning the UK into some kind of "off-shore tax haven" (with a corresponding reduction in public services), benefit poor communities?. Aligning themselves with the likes of Redwood, James Dyson and the other wealthy brexiteers, is not going to turn out well for them.CrosspoolClarets wrote:

.
Added to this, they will now be deprived of all the EU money that went to the poorer regions of the UK.
For 2014-20, Greater Manchester was allocated €413.8 million, Liverpool City Region €220.9 million, Lancashire €265.2 million, Cumbria €91 million, and Cheshire and Warrington €141.6 million. (On average Burnley has benefited by £5 million /year)
This is in stark contrast to the funding cuts imposed on the region by central govt.

You posted some obscure chart, and linked it to Brexit.
You, like the person who generated it, attempted to use the graph to make out that Brexit was a bad thing for people in low paid jobs. when in fact, it just highlights that the status quo is a bad thing for for people on low paid jobs.
It might scare some people, but the post above pulled it apart quite nicely.

The above is the only fact on this subject today.Sidney1st wrote:No one really knows what's going to happen with Brexit, it's mainly guess work on both sides.
The rest is just opinion. In some cases educated, in others not, but everyone is entitled to one.
I wasn’t arguing that the Brexiteers in those small towns like Burnley have it right - it wasn’t the reason I voted Brexit. I simply respect their right to decide, and feel offended on their behalfs by continuous “research” trying to imply these people are thick in an obvious attempt to nudge down public opinion a few percent.
To Remainers I would say this - think back to that horrible feeling you felt on the morning after the referendum when you felt sick to your stomach, feeling like you had woken up in a foreign country, feeling disregarded and disillusioned. Now imagine feeling that way every day of your lives. Many, not all, of the 52% feel that, without them being racist or even xenophobic. That’s why they deserve a generous dollop of respect, and, as a minimum, some political attention.
