Still find it sad everytime I go past the Talbot and see it closed.lakedistrictclaret wrote: ↑Tue Apr 11, 2023 4:02 pmDon't know, but I walked past The Talbot yesterday and noticed a "Sold" sign.
Presumably flats. Too much to hope that someone is going to take it on as a pub.

Has there been a better post ever on this website? So vivid, twist and turns, it has everything. "the old days of non fire doors" is a brilliant end line too.AlargeClaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 07, 2017 5:23 pmThought it had closed yrs ago ,classic 60’s style monstrosity.Boned a few girls there back in the day from Cats and Savannah’s ,absolute Shiite hole even then.Took some bird back there, and night porter insists on showing us room 1st (I was only gona sh@g and go ffs) anyway I days yeah fine and gave him a fiver or somat to feck off.Anyway I’m down to business ,only about ten mins later to find said porter standing in the doorway tossing himself off! Re: Keirby Hotel shut down
I went to a benefit dinner there ( for Jim Thompson, I think ) in the early 80s. Tommy Docherty was the very entertaining speaker. As he left, I saw him get into his limo nursing two bottles of scotch. It was the very next day when he broke down in the witness box in his libel action against Willie Morgan. It's perhaps an object lesson in how not to prepare for a day in the witness box!
And congratulations to alargeclaret on having assimilated with such accuracy the style of Mills and Boon!

Re: Keirby Hotel shut down
I was in Manchester last weekend chatting / quizzing some knowledgeable MU fans about a player from our mutual clubs who was granted a testimonial match at Old Trafford. I have a copy of the match programme with tributes from the footballing fraternity and remarkably the match never went ahead due to the issues involving Morgan and an interview with Granada TV which I think led to the court action mentioned above? Only one of the United fans remembered it was Willie Morgan. I informed them also that whilst at Burnley he was the first British player to have his own fan club. In reply they informed me that when he signed for United Morgan told them he wanted the number 7 shirt which had previously been worn by George Best. Morgan's wish was granted and Best took up the number 10 shirt. We didnt discuss the Keirby Hotel though.Claret53 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 12, 2023 10:42 amI went to a benefit dinner there ( for Jim Thompson, I think ) in the early 80s. The Swiss corner was a bit of a nightmare coming down the steps when you were half p!shed. Never knew why it was called the Swiss corner, maybe because gazing out looking over the Culvert if it had been snowing looking towards Brunshaw you could be in the Alps.

Only just seen this. Before my time on here maybe but it’s got my eyes watering with laughter. And the post about getting sacked for having a quick one just did it. Possibly the best reply to a post on here that I’ve ever seen. It just goes to show the fun that can be had on a forum if we don’t take ourselves too seriously.

Re: Keirby Hotel shut down
Planning app to return it to a hotel.
Ward councillor Afrasiab Anwar, who is also the leader of Burnley Council, said that while he has no objections to the planning application he believes that if change of use is approved it needs to be a ‘true’ hotel and not used as a hostel or similar type of facility used for longer term use.
"There are two schools close to the site which is on a gateway into the town centre and any change of use should enhance the area and compliment the work being done to lift neighbouring Yorkshire Street.
"Anything short of this would have an adverse effect on what is already one of the most deprived areas in the borough.”

Re: Keirby Hotel shut down
Would be a welcome addition if it was opened as a relatively affordable budget option. I dont need much when im in town for football. So an IBIS / Travelodge / OYO type would do me

The Swiss Corner was one of the few Burnley ‘pubs’ where ‘young people’ (16 year olds circa 1970) would be served an alcoholic drink without too many questions. I can remember many happy hours sat with my friends (out of the cold wind and rain of the bus station) carefully sipping my weekly ration of two bottles of Mackeson stout.
At which pub in Burnley did you order your first ‘pint of beer’ and which alcoholic drink did you choose?

It was Eric Bluh who was actually Austrian although he was born within yards of the Swiss border.Guitargeorge wrote: ↑Wed Aug 09, 2023 11:54 amThe Swiss Bar was so named because the then manager of the Keirby was…….Swiss. Does nothing to contradict the already stereotypical image the town has.

Re: Keirby Hotel shut down
As the councillor mentioned in the Burnley Express - they need to distinguish whether this is a true Hotel planning application for Leisure and Business use. Fingers crossed it is.
Re: Keirby Hotel shut down
if the hotel is shut who owns the car park is the bloke who collects money for the car park doing so illegally
