Should we be scoring more goals from corners?
Should we be scoring more goals from corners?
I think we could score more goals from corners if we weren't so predictable. A long deep cross to the back post seems our only plan at the moment.
Why not have three or four carefully rehearsed options to keep the opposition guessing?
Near post flick on to the two big men on the back post is always one of my favourites.

We always go deep. When we just whip it in it's when we are most dangerous. Short corners could help as well.
Re: Should we be scoring more goals from corners?
Does anyone else think the corners/free kicks are more dangerous when JBG takes them? I thought some were superb yesterday, right in the middle of the pack at pace.

Tarko is great with defensive headers, unfortunately in the opposing penalty area as well as in his own penalty area !!
However, I predict that he will score before Christmas.....

What's happened to that routine whereby the ball was played in low
into the box, one of ours stepped over it, and the next man hopefully
got a free shot?
Did everyone else twig? Was it ever successful?

Re: Should we be scoring more goals from corners?
What ticks me off his this grouping of 6 or 8 players on the penalty spot before they scatter.
There is all that grappling going on that somehow the officials never see.
Any professional should be able to deliver the ball in a straight line about 8yds out. If we start Mee, Tarks, Wood, Hendrick and Cork just outside the area and all attack that line. There is a better chance of one getting a head on it and on the move. The other bonus would be no grappling but if they foul you on the move more chance of getting a decision now and again.

I've mentioned this a few times in our matchday threads -our conversion ratio from set pieces considering our height is woeful

Aye, Brady off corners and free kicks might be a blessing given the current form of Gudmundsson and Defour. Brady looked a danger on them but it's very seldom yielded any return for us directly.

Re: Should we be scoring more goals from corners?
Why does our most creative player (Defour) always go short but never get the ball passed to him?
Re: Should we be scoring more goals from corners?
I'd say it was more a ploy to drag 2 defenders out of the box, and with him being short and the least potential arial threat, as well as a decent crosser, it makes perfect sense.StuffyClaret wrote:Why does our most creative player (Defour) always go short but never get the ball passed to him?
're short corners mentioned above and why we don't do them more, it I was on my pet hates.
Dragging all the big men up, to then play it short before going all the way back to half way to start again. Without threatening a ball into the box.

It takes two opposition players out of the area.StuffyClaret wrote:Why does our most creative player (Defour) always go short but never get the ball passed to him?
Plus I don't think they expect Defour to win many headers.

We actually seem to create problems from corners quite often but the ball never seems to end up in the back of the net. Tarks is nowhere near as clinical as Keane.

Yes, remember seeing us score a goal at Middlesborough with that routine under Eddie Howe, might have been Jay Rod who scored, not sure.ElectroClaret wrote:What's happened to that routine whereby the ball was played in low

Was useful on more than one occasion.
It was in Howes era with Jay usually the beneficiary.
In fact I seem to recall Southampton trying it once Jay went there and Bournemouth’s first yesterday was similarly crafted

Re: Should we be scoring more goals from corners?
Gudmonddson has a cracking left peg so I'm surprised he doesn't take them shortish from the right to someone like Defour who lays it off at an angle for Johann to move on and hit one from the corner of the box

Notice we did this for the first corner between the Bob Lord and CFS on Tuesday and completely ****** it up.

Re: Should we be scoring more goals from corners?
Noticed JBG came all the way over to the Longside to take a FK yet we keep hearing what a marvellous crosser of the ball Charlie Taylor is. Madness.
Re: Should we be scoring more goals from corners?
When you look at the stats I seem to remember that very few goals come from corners for all clubs. They appear to be good chances but aren't when you look at the conversion rate.
A quick google suggests a conversion rate rate of about 1.5%.
