Is Molineux a new ground ?

Post by LordBob » Fri Dec 15, 2017 10:58 pm

A guy just been on TS, a Wolves fan and he was asked did he go at the time the ground was moved Sir Jack Hayward sold part of the ground for retail development and effectively shifted the footprint over half a stadium size away. Spurs are doing the same but that will be 'A New Stadium' does Molineux not qualify for the same title?

Just been reading Wiki and it mentions nothing about the ground being moved.

Not been moved in my lifetime of watching football, it's the same ground. The stand we sit in now (on the side) was there in the 1980s with the rest of the old part of the ground still in place.

Spurs ground will be new, as was Wembley, as was Bournemouth's because they are not on the same footprint.

Wasn’t it turned round through 90 degrees at some point?

No idea on that, but if it was it was pre-1960s.

Wasn't the new stand, opposite the players tunnel, built quite a distance back. They then moved the pitch across towards it but nothing like half a stadium?

Thats exactly what I did and started to wonder what the chap and dare I say Mike Parry were talking about. I do remember the Hayward stand was a fair distance from the pitch originally but a few metres would not constitute a new ground I suppose a fair measurement would be the proximity of The Molineux pub, it was by the gates of The North Bank. In the 60s, as a kid I was stood there pre-match with a mate, we'd hitched down to the game scarves hidden those day's and this lad, older than us came and said " you are Burnley fans" in a Black Country accent well what do you do anyway he said " it's ok I'm an Albion fan and I'm waiting for 'Little Beasty'. He asked if we knew him he said his Mum worked with his Mum at Keele services and Beasty was a mad keen Claret, never missed a match and he lived in Stoke the guy we were talking to was called Tony Hadleigh, 13 Vicarage Rd. West Bromwich never forget that, we kept in touch for years anyhow this fresh faced kid in a gaberdene coat turned up it was ' Little Beasty' real name Dave Beaston better known to all as the legendary Dave Burnley funny how you never forget. The stadium moved over quite a distance, but remained mainly in the same footprint. Spurs’ Ground is turning around, which they’ve left for some time, and is totally being rebuilt in one go.

In that case the turfs new. The footprint of all four stands are nothing like what predated them.

Wolves’ ground was not turned around 90 degrees, it was shifted over sideways.

I thought it was a sideways move but happy to be corrected.

Looks like it was a great ground in its heyday.

I remember them moving the ground thro' 90 degrees so it's probably in the 60s or 70s when it happened. (Unless that's only when I remember being told)

Jel, please see the images I’ve posted above. You can clearly see that the John Ireland stand was built further back, and then the pitch moved over, not around.

You can see from these pictures how far the ground has moved, the first new stand to be built was build behind the stand with the funny shaped roof after the houses behind it were demolished and then the rest of the ground moved towards it in the early 90's.

Here's the road at the back of that stand with the new stand being bulit behind the boarded off area to the right.

You can see that the pitch has moved about half a pitch length.

The South Bank terrace was simply massive.

30,000 fans behind the goal.

The stand looked like it was in a different county. :D Two ends were closed and the majority of the fans were stood on the Kop when I first went. I think there were about 15k on and we got beat 3.0. Nothing new against Wolves at the time.
