Owen Coyle... it's ironic, reallly
For a man who's most quoted remark referred to Bolton Wanderer's being " 10 years ahead " of where Burnley were, I can't help seeing the irony that in November 2007, Owen Coyle was managing St Johnstone, a relatively small Scottish Club with an average gate of 2,959, and after much toing and froing, 10 years later, he's managing Ross County, a er.. relatively small Scottish Club with an average gate of 4,565...

It was as laughable as Kilbys we are set up for the next 10 years after the first promotion. 18 months later and we were pleading poverty

Coyle has just (re)found his level that's all. Good luck to him. May he finish his career in the back of beyond.

Re: Owen Coyle... it's ironic, reallly
Its all relitive though. Burnley were broke when we got promotion with directors loans, debts and low income, a bad smell from the ITV Digital collapse. Promotion stabilised all that and it became manageable, however operating losses continued and that affects what you see on the field.Dyched wrote:It was as laughable as Kilbys we are set up for the next 10 years after the first promotion. 18 months later and we were pleading poverty
This is why big clubs don’t come back, the likes of Leeds, the Sheffield clubs, Forest etc who are bigger clubs than us but there operating costs are massive.

Alright, he may have been out on his "ten year" prediction, but don't you realise just what this bloke
did for the club? We probably wouldn't be operating now in our current format.
And certainly not in the PL.
Unbelievable.

Only just over 8 years since the first promotion, by ten years on in 2019 we will probably be beyond anyone's prediction.
Not sure even BK would have predicted where we are now with the club structurally and financially sound and showing the corresponding increase in performance.
Leave the trolls under the bridge to stew in their own unhappiness.

Re: Owen Coyle... it's ironic, reallly
Like it or not Coyle did a good job for our club. He got the players playing exciting attacking football, he got promotion, but more importantly he got the fans believing. I know we had a bad time for a season or two when he left, but that increase in belief, numbers etc laid the foundations for fans to come back quickly in droves when things picked up. it also meant we were on the football map again, so signing players and convincing them to join an unfashionable northern Club wasn’t such a hard decision.
He’s still a d*ck for the way he left, but it’s in the past.

I don't think anyone at the time expected the massive explosion in TV rights money which in turn created a rising expectation for transfer fees and player wages.Dyched wrote:It was as laughable as Kilbys we are set up for the next 10 years after the first promotion. 18 months later and we were pleading poverty
I think we got something like £65 million over a 5 year period for that 1st promotion. This season alone, just 8 years later, we are guaranteed over £100 million if we don't take another point from our remaining games and can reasonably expect to maybe double the whole of our 'season in the sun' money AND the parachute payments that followed.
I think Kilby was right, we were, and are set up for the 10 years following that game at Wembley. Not saying that everything has been a steady ship but we would not be where we are now without that the money that followed.
Re: Owen Coyle... it's ironic, reallly
Coyle showed that you don't need to be a good manager, just a good motivator.
As a manager he was rubbish, but he was good at motivating the players. If he was any good he wouldn't be managing Ross County.

No, Kilby was wrong. If it wasn't for the 1/2 promotions since we would be in trouble. He should have known the finances at the club, what needed paying before making a stupid comment.bfcmik wrote:I don't think anyone at the time expected the massive explosion in TV rights money which in turn created a rising expectation for transfer fees and player wages.

I have to agree with Dyched here. Sean Dyche has said himself we were mismanaged during and after our first promotion and had absolutely nothing to show for it. Sean made it perfectly clear after his first promotion that while he was in charge that would not happen again.

Yes...I totally agree we should batter Barry Kilby because he made an overly-excited statement whilst the euphoria of our unexpected promotion was still in the air. Shocking performance which clearly outweighs the good things the man did for our club.

Whilst I was at the dentist the other day I was reading one of those magazines that aren't really magazines just a very glossy series of adverts for crap that Ribble Valley types must buy.
However, in the contents was a page listed 'sport' - so I turned to that page. It was about Owen Coyle Jr. He came across well in this article - discussing the problem of growing up in this area with his name. He's now coaching the England amputee football team that are trying to raise money to go to the European Championships. They have to self-fund it as the FA doesn't give them any money. Left me thinking fair play to the lad.
Don't know if there is a link to the story out there. Worth a read though.
Yep - just found it - http://www.live-magazines.co.uk/from-st ... -strength/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Blackburn Rovers and Owen Coyle have 2 things in common.
1, they've both found their natural level.
2, I detest both of them.

Coyle really was a victim of his own success. His positive approach got the club moving and the fans believing anything was possible.
We took him to our heart and he turned his back on us.
I don't believe he'd have taken us much further but he'd have been better served staying with us. His decision to leave was a bad one and the way he left unprofessional and hurtful to those of us that travel the country watching OUR team.

We were very, very lucky indeed that OC had one of his two good seasons in a long and hilarious career of tripe. He did instil belief, but then the players did their bit too.
I can't believe anyone can still think this clown is anything other than a buls**ter, stupid enough to believe he knows what he is doing. His record speaks for itself. We were just very lucky he had a fluke season with us.

Often with managers you have to assess them with the manager who came before them.
Jimmy Mullen inherited Frank Casper's team and got them playing.
Owen Coyle inherited Steve Cotterill's team and got them playing.
Maybe FC and SC were good at buying players with potential in the league we we're in at the time but it took JM and OC to inspire/motivate those same players.

Re: Owen Coyle... it's ironic, reallly
I think the way OC left us was the reason for his downfall. He traded on honesty and integrity. He told players he was there for them. Whether he believed it and had his head turned or whether it was always lies I don’t know. But once you are seen by everyone as a liar you simply can’t play the honesty card any more. It is sad really. There are similarities between dyche and coyle up to two weeks before the end. However I think Sean has been more honest and even if he was to leave many of us would wish him well. OC handled his last two weeks with us incredibly badly and it has hung on him like a rotten smell ever since.

Re: Owen Coyle... it's ironic, reallly
I lost my voice singing OC's C&B Army at MK in January 2010.
Then he couldn't face the press, then Sandy Stewart said he'd gone to visit his mother. And then we learned of what had gone on prior to the Boxing Day fixture.
Even on the day of our Wembley play-off win the news was dominated by the story of him being linked to Celtic, I'm still curious to know quite what went on there.
But the bottom line is that he couldn't be trusted. He'd shown his true colours when he left St Johnstone on the eve of a cup final for us, and when he did effectively the same on leaving us the blinkers came off.
From Coyle masks to Coyle money within 9 months, and everything he has touched since then has turned a rather dark shade of brown.

The amount of silver linings to Owen Coyles leaving blows my mind.
Re: Owen Coyle... it's ironic, reallly
You can't blame him for leaving us though, at the time Bolton were probably 10 years ahead of us albeit a sinking ship that he kept afloat for a season. They had better players, stadium, training ground and had been an established PL side for a while so had more funds to burn. The reason Coyle left was because Kilby refused to back him in the January transfer window when we clearly needed 3 or 4 solid additions, Coyle knew we were sinking without investment and Kilby wasn't willing to back Coyle. Coyle left for a better job at the time and to try and save his reputation as the best young manager in the country. I certainly don't blame him at all, we all know the way Kilby operated, tight as cramp and you simply don't get away with that in the PL like you do in the Championship.

I think you might find he said it around two years before that promotion suggesting that if we did get promoted it could set us up for two years. I doubt he could have known that when we did go up we’d have lots of debts to pay back, were under a transfer embargo and were then hit by having to pay back all the money to Flood’s administrators.Dyched wrote:It was as laughable as Kilbys we are set up for the next 10 years after the first promotion. 18 months later and we were pleading poverty
