Player contracts
Just having a look through the squad list and players who are coming out of contract this summer
Arfield: could sign a pre-contract with Rangers/Celtic or even an MLS club with his Canadian connections within a matter of days. Would hope we'd be offering him at least a 2 year deal as he never lets us down when called on.
Marney: difficult one. Can't see many clubs being interested in him until he proves his fitness which he's unlikely to do for us with Westwood first in line and unless there are injuries/suspensions I can't see us changing the central midfielders. However he's signed contract extensions for us when he's been injured in the past so can see him getting another 12 months.
Ulvestad: released
Lindegaard: released assuming that Heaton recovers
Mitchell: possibly another 12 months to develop
The bigger concern is players expiring in 2019; Mee, Tarks, Hendrick, Vokes, Barnes... going to be a busy time for Dave Baldwin!

Arfield is playing first team football in the PL.
Marney will retire
Ulvestad will be released
Lindegaard will possibly be kept on, dependent on Heaton. He's well above Legzdins anyway.

Re: Player contracts
These should be being dealt with now. No way can we let contracts of these players get down to the last 12 months. That would be poor from the club...but I expect there’ll be announcements throughout January on contract extensions if the club are on this (which i’m Sure they are).FeedTheArf wrote:The bigger concern is players expiring in 2019; Mee, Tarks, Hendrick, Vokes, Barnes... going to be a busy time for Dave Baldwin!

Not like the club to not be proactive with contracts is it and then risk having to sell our best players the summer before their contract expires...

Out of contract, no clubs willing to take a risk on a bloke who's had a series of serious knee injuries, 34 years old, very rich man.Foulthrow wrote:Why will Marney retire?
Re: Player contracts
As popular as he is, I just can't see us offering Marney another deal. Realistically he's probably 5th choice centre mid now, behind even Westwood in the pecking order and I just don't see him getting the chance to play enough games to prove himself.

Re: Player contracts
I'd be very surprised if we offered Deano another contract, unless its on the some sort of coaching thingy like Duff.
Re: Player contracts
The club will be trying to get Tarkowski to sign a new contract.
Whether he will is an entirely different matter.

I'd be offering Tarkowski, Gudmundsson, Mee, Heaton, Defour etc an extra couple of years on their contracts. Got to protect your most saleable assets

Different style of player to Westwood.
I'd bring Westwood on to replace Cork and Dean to replace Defour........both in an emergency.

Re: Player contracts
The great thing we have going for us is that players at the Turf now appear to have a wonderful working environment. Facilities, starting place, culture, team spirit, settled manager and club on an upwards curve.
We may find that some choose not to move on whereas they would have in the past.
Obviously, a top player being offered double wages elsewhere would be tough to retain, but if (for sake of argument) it is £10k p.w. different, we may keep them.

Is that a backhanded swipe at us losing the likes of Gray, Keane Ings Boyd?1989_claret wrote:Not like the club to not be proactive with contracts is it and then risk having to sell our best players the summer before their contract expires...
Having spent a few bob getting them in I doubt the Club just sits on its butt as the clock ticks towards midnight.
If some of our players want out-there is j**k s**t the Board can do about it.

If anything Westwood is more like Defour as he is more of a passer. Dean is probably more like cork as he will really make tackles and get stuck in...piston broke wrote:Different style of player to Westwood.

Re: Player contracts
I'm pretty sure the club will begin contract talks when there's X months left on a player's contract.UpTheBeehole wrote:I'd be offering Tarkowski, Gudmundsson, Mee, Heaton, Defour etc an extra couple of years on their contracts. Got to protect your most saleable assets
If they don't want to renew, we'll no doubt try and sell at the end of this season. But I'd like to think they'll all agree 2+ year extensions if we want to keep them on. If Tarkowski doesn't, then it'll be like Keane. Sell for £30+ million and bring somebody else in.
Some decisions for the club are made for them.

Dyche said that contract situations were being dealt with, he also said they continually keep discussions ongoing with players & their agents on Clarets player a few weeks ago.

Re: Player contracts
In regards to Marney his next contract will be his last chance of getting a decent one so he may well choose to move on to get more than 1-2yrs.
No issue if that's the case, will always be held in high regard.

Re: Player contracts
Incredible comment - you would think that all the club have to do is click their fingers. We worked tirelessly on trying to get such as Ings, Keane, Gray to sign new deals. You can lead the horse to water but ......1989_claret wrote:Not like the club to not be proactive with contracts is it and then risk having to sell our best players the summer before their contract expires...
Other clubs find themselves in the same position simply because the players, and their agents, have the power.

Mitchell was unavailable for a number of those games because of international calls during each of the three windows. Chester then brought in a new manager who opted to bring in another goalkeeper who he could have for longer.

One thing in our favour with Tarkowski is that he wouldn't move to a London club, or any club too far from home

Time to extend the contracts of those who may get to a point where it is possible to run them down.

Re: Player contracts
I can see Marney going out on loan in January to get first team football and fully rehabilitated. What happens after that may well depend on who else comes and goes.
Re: Player contracts
If Deano's knee is fine, then that will do for me, new one/two year deal, he hasn't had much football in the last three years, so could be useful.

Re: Player contracts
I would sign Scotty up for another two years. We may well sign more players in his position, but his versatility and willingness to be a squad player make him ideal for the bench at worst as he can cover a few positions and never lets us down.
I would, sadly, probably release Deano. He has been unbelievable for us but he is 33 and has had quite a few injuries over the last few seasons. I can see a George Boyd type scenario with him in that he will probably get some decent Championship offers due to his promotion record with us and Hull.
As said above though, the bigger consideration is the 2019 ones. We should be doing everything we can to tie down the likes of Defour and JBG, for sure.

Re: Player contracts
The names of our squad sound wonderful, but probably only in the context of Burnley football club.
Recent history shows diminishing returns for the few who have jumped or been pushed.
Burnley is THE place to be, not some backwater , where the ambitious are seeking to progress by moving elsewhere anymore.
Older players , or non regulars may see the sense in shipping out, but not so much the ones who have made a name for themselves here, in claret and blue.
