Drinking in Manchester this Saturday
Should be a few (thousand) Clarets drinking early doors in Manchester city centre this weekend. Always a great place for several beers. I'll nominate a few to kick it off...
The City Arms
The Marble Arch
Britons Protection
The Crown & Kettle
Lass O Gowrie
Hopefully I'll be able to find my way to the Etihad.

It was last time I was over, though that was several months ago. Peveril was closed, but I think its since re-opened.

The Shakespeare on Fountain Street, down the side of Primark. Plenty of TV screens too and good ale.
Takes me back to Uni days - oh the joys.

My particular favourite Manchester boozer - The Castle Hotel on Oldham Street.
Cracking boozer, once we'd left Ewood me and my mates headed there to toast that 2-1 victory a few years back.

I think it closed down and then re-opened. Someone sent me an email suggesting I meet there a few days ago, but I never went so I guess it's open.dougcollins wrote:Is Lass O Gowrie still open?
The pubs you've got in this topic are the more traditional pubs in the City Centre. Exchange Square near Printworks and the Manchester Arndale is a good place for pubs. There are some refreshments and bands on near the ground, but it's supposed to be home fans only. I don't know how they enforce it. They have bands on as well.
A lot of City fans will be in the Northern Quarter where there are a lot of bars, cafes etc. Just stick it in google maps and it will come up. That's on the ground side of the City Centre so a convenient place to get to the ground. You can either walk back to town and get a bus, or walk it from there and it will be 25 mins walk.
Worth allowing more time than you might expect to get into the ground. Everyone gets searched and it creates queues. You might get kept behind after. I'm not sure. I can't remember what happened in other Cup games where there was a big away support. Wolves was the last one. I should remember but I don't. There was no mither anyway, and I can't remember the last time when there was. No one's into that any more are they? I do remember Burnley had a bit of a reputation in the day.
probably stuff you already knew, but I wish you all well which is the main thing.
If you want buses or trams, catch them in the City Centre because they will be full unless you're an early bird. Bus is the 216. £2 I think. can't tell you about the tram. Metrolink have a website with times etc, and fares etc

Re: Drinking in Manchester this Saturday
If there are enough of you to warrant a taxi then go for that option - theres an app called Gett than lets you order black cabs in Manc with a set fare (same as uber but for black cabs) and usually will cost about a quid each more from centre to Etihad.
If you look up the twitter page for the app there are usually offer codes which will prob knock a fiver off 1st journeys so you'll end up paying less than bus/tram. Then you can delete the app and not use it again.

Re: Drinking in Manchester this Saturday
I've heard there's a real ale beer emporium opened up somewhere in the northern quarter , possibly in an old market but struggling to get an address. Ring a bell with anyone ?

I assume you’re thinking of Cooper Hall, and if you are it doesn’t open until mid-afternoon on a Saturday so probably not ideal for a pre-match Ale.Garnerssoap wrote:I've heard there's a real ale beer emporium opened up somewhere in the northern quarter , possibly in an old market but struggling to get an address. Re: Drinking in Manchester this Saturday
expecting manchester's trendy northern zone to be crawling with clarets tomorrow.
not been mentioned yet but the mackie mayor has a blackjack brewery bar inside. cracking building and good (but a touch pricey) food stalls in there as well.
nq is about the best place to be if you're walking to the ground.
if you're walking up from victoria, the pilcrow pub is worth a shout as well. made of wood, its in sadler's yard as you walk up hanover st towards the nq

Ah, yes I suspect that is the venue he means. I spent the afternoon and evening in Altrincham market just before Christmas, which is their other venture, and it was fantastic - so can probably vouch for Mackie Mayor as well.quoonbeatz wrote:

Both quality places, maybe a bit trendy for some. You'll be upset if you expect much change for a fiver with your pint.quoonbeatz wrote:alty market and mackie mayor both excellent!

The Angel is a good boozer, close to Marble Arch.
Lass O Gowrie is still open.
I assumed most would pile into the print works but good to see NQ will be claret and blue!

Wetherspoons let kids in, so Seven Stars in Printworks, or Moon Underwater on Deansgate would work.gazr wrote:Which pubs are likely to let us in with my grandson who's 10?

Great boozer that and great for small gigs too in that back room. There is a small real ale type venue just across the street too which is good.

Re: Drinking in Manchester this Saturday
Good place for watching the early KO is The Courtyard (Student type place over by Oxford Road/old BBC Building area but cheap as chips with massive screens).
Definitely a cab job to get to the ground after though and id recomed leaving the pub about 2pm to be sure

I remember it being pretty much a wasteland and beer desert. Best bet is to not have any visible colours and have a couple immediately by the ground at the fan zoneTranspennine wrote:There aren't any pubs near the ground. Are There?

You could park around the back of Piccadilly; drink in the northern quarter and get the tram to the ground. It's a 20 min walk back to your car after the game.stealdo wrote:Will any pub near the ground be away friendly? Driving over and parking near the ground
Re: Drinking in Manchester this Saturday
It's rougher than Tarzan's feet around the ground, there is a couple of pubs Mary D's which I wouldn't class as friendly never mind away friendly and the other I can think of is the Mitchell Arms (?) ,their window cleaner has a sander.stealdo wrote:Will any pub near the ground be away friendly? Apart from the etihad campus, that area of east Manchester is pretty much a large brownfield site of former gas and steelworks. Not much in the way of friendly community pubs to be found these days...stealdo wrote:Will any pub near the ground be away friendly? Driving over and parking near the ground

Will be heading Angel with six others. There's actually free street parking right by it in a Saturday after 12. It's a 40 min walk to the stadium from there or a 8 min cab right.
