We're not selling a member of the first XI for £2m, even if he is out of contract in summer.

We paid 5 mill for Wells. Surely he would command a similar figure at least.

I thought was going be about another taxpayer funded infrastructure project for West Ham.

Wells had 12 months left, Arfield has about 6 months.
He could talk and agree a contract with anyone outside the English leagues. 2m would be good business if we got say Lennon for a similar fee.
I think he'll get 1 last pay day somewhere, he's hardly been on bumper wages during his career, and I doubt we would be giving him a large contract with large wages. If we are to move forward each year then Arfield and a couple of others won't be near the match day squads next season.
Sad as it sounds, its reality, and I love the bloke.

He's been great for us and I'd be sad to see him go.
However, if he does, we'll always have the memories of
some great goals and of course, that brilliant celebration with
Duffer at Deadwood.

Sooner keep Scotty till the end of the season than accept £2mil for him.
If we are not going to offer him a new contact.

Re: West Ham linked with Arfield
If we can replace him with better now then sell him. If we can’t then we’ll likely see him move on at the end of the season as we’ll need to free up some space in our 25 man squad unless a few of our u21 development squad players come on leaps and bounds and can supplement our 1st team playing squad.
Incremental improvements is the name of the game for us and players like Arfield, Marney, Legdzins etc are the first ones to be moved on....

Re: West Ham linked with Arfield
We should definitely be keeping Arfield and getting him on another contract if he'll stay. He's the epitome of our progression under Dyche, seems like one of the biggest characters in the dressing room and although he's probably found his level on the pitch he's never let us down or had a bad run of games.
Everything's sunshine and rainbows for now but next season when we've got all those Europa League games and our domestic form's shot and we're 16/17th, going back to basics, I know who I'd rather have in the squad for the fight. Not Aaron Lennon. I'd bet Stoke would bite our hands off for Bardsley and Walters back right now.

If true, we can't compete with West Ham on wages
Plus, if he has not taken up the option of an extension to his current deal, why keep someone who is looking to get away
Need to also look at moving on people like Ulvestad, Agyei, Marney, Walters, Anderson and Long (loans or permanent deals) to free up places for people who can be considered as serious contenders for a starting place in the team

Scotty has done well for us, runs his heart out every game, not the most gifted player but has scored some crucial goals, he has bags of passion for his team and should he go will be missed by the majority of fans, one of my favourite players over the last few seasons.

Has been an excellent player and fits the framework well as did Boyd but needs a fresh challenge.

If we were to get relegated next season one player I would want in the team the year after would be Scott Arfield. We could always buy him
back I suppose.

For what its worth i dont think arfield has a lack of anything other than pace.
Has an eye for goal, i think his touch, skill and movement is first rate and hes a steady passer. Works as hard as anyone. Just lacks pace.
Will be gutted when he leaves. One of my favourite ever bur ley players.
As above think its imperative we maintain some continuity bit obviously dont sacrifice our progress for sentimemt.

Re: West Ham linked with Arfield
I think this as well, technically he's pretty good, was quite useful at dropping into the hole and often times was the only one trying to thread balls through to Gray when we were mostly just lumping it up field during the second promotion season. His biggest drawback is his lack of athleticism, if he had the pace and power to beat a man he'd have great attacking qualities to add to his already stellar defensive ones.cricketfieldclarets wrote:For what its worth i dont think arfield has a lack of anything other than pace.

Can I be the first to suggest Scott’s agent has planted this story to hurry up a new contract offer?
I like him, but he doesn’t strike me as a player West Ham would target.

Would be gutted if there’s any truth in this. Has scored some massive goals for us over the years and as others have said, more than anyone, he epitomises the progress of the club since Dyche came in.

I like the way he rolls the ball into the net, shame he doesn't do it more often but he really does have good technique.

Re: West Ham linked with Arfield
I too initially thought "nah, he's not a W Ham player" but I think he is somewhat a Moyes player - so can see there may be something in it.
Hope he stays though, as per many here, for me he epitomises our recent rise based on hard work/getting the basics right. Seems a "very good sort" on top of that and a real team man.

Think he very much fits the mould for a Moyes team. Think he'd work well with Noble and give their midfield more fight.... and as said he pops up with the odd important goal too. I'd look at him if I was building for a scrap.

Re: West Ham linked with Arfield
I'd be absolutely gutted if Arfield wasn't with us next season. Any building needs foundations, and he's one of the foundations of what we're building at Burnley - one of the players who sets the culture and character of the dressing room and maintains the ethos that got us where we are and can keep us here.
Apart from that, he's a hugely underrated player. He's the best player we've got when it comes to reading the bounce of the ball and getting into goalscoring positions. When he's played wide in the Premier League for us his defensive responsibilities have forced him to sacrifice that quality a bit, but as big a fan as I am of Hendrick, Arfield has the tools to get 10 goals from that advanced midfield role that is probably his best position at this level. He keeps the ball and holds it well, he's a decent passer and an excellent finisher.
I'd like to think he'll get and sign a new contract and that it will make him as well remunerated as any of our key players.

Arfield is an established premiership midfielder even with 6 months left I would want 5 or 6 million. Personally I would not sell Arfield he is instrumental to the Burnley ethos

Agree with the many positives written here on Arfield but why is he not a Scot in 2 senses? When there are so few good footballers these days in Scotland, it is a mystery that Scottie never picked up international caps nearer home than Canada.

punchy, seen as he hasn't scored 10 league goals in a season at any level in his career.
Id be happy if one of our strikers scored 10 this season...

Just had a look at West Ham Online message board and on their transfer rumours the few comments on there relating to Scotty seem to be very dismissive. There is only about 3 comments so don't attribute it as that's how the whole of West Ham think

Re: West Ham linked with Arfield
Scotty is hard working quality adaptable midfielder. He has proved this time and time again. as someone has said further up , he embodies what we have become.
He is not somebody who is regularly going to thrill and woo the crowds but he is somebody who will niggle and battle and I'd rather have him here for the rest of the season than give him away for a small fee. A goal or an assist here and there from him could cover that cost.
At the end of the season, I wouldn't be rushing to move him on because he is a known package and a more than useful squad player however I could understand if he wants to seek regular starts.

Re: West Ham linked with Arfield
Pointless selling him mid-season for such a paltry amount. I wouldn't be too fussed if he went or stayed in the summer, though. Fantastic servant and a useful squad player but if he left he'd be on more money and we'd have the chance to upgrade, so it'd be win-win from that point of view.
Re: West Ham linked with Arfield
Just shows how far we have come from having to sell Andy Gray to Charlton for 1.5 million 10 years ago to stay afloat, when we can let Arfield run down his contract perhaps with him playing less game time with the signing of Nkoudoudeanothedino wrote:Can't see the point in selling him for small change unless we get a few extra bodies in the positions he can cover this month, regardless of whether he's off in the summer
