potholes
They are everywhere at the moment. the amount of money stolen from Motorists for years in road tax that went into the Government coffers and not the roads is a disgrace.

That's because they need to actually re-lay some roads instead of just filling in the holes.

The main road near us was totally relaid in the summer....it is now breaking up....I'm sure a road surface should last longer than six months!

Absolutely spot on. If they were repaired properly then the repairs should last years instead of being back to square one the next winter.

Combination of things really.
Increased number of cars, lorries using roads that aren't designed to take large numbers of lorries, poor workmanship and the weather changes.

I think it was Newbury bypass that they declared wouldn't need re-laying for 10yrs, turns out it was half that time due to the number of heavy vehicles that used it etc.

Re: potholes
The M65 between Burnley and Blackburn is full of quite deep potholes and pretty dangerous
if you happen to drive over one....almost impossible to see at night on the unlit sections.

Could be worse........
I read the news today oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many arseholes it takes to fill deadwood park.

on the West bound M62 near junctions 20 - 18, Rochdale to Simister Island, there have been roadworks for 3 years. All works now gone, as has the hard shoulder, its now a "smart" motorway, complete with huge pot-holes. ABSOLUTE DISGRACE.

Having lived and worked in all 3 of those countries I could say that if you selectively pick certain roads then that claim would be true but taking an overall view, I would disagree. However any of the countries recognised by the UN must have better roads than Burnham Gate and the bit outside the gym there with the 4 foot pot hole that goes right drown to the original cobbles.cricketfieldclarets wrote:I got a book of facts recently. Highlighting what was said earlier though I would expect that the roads highlighted for their quality in Ethiopia and Sudan would be the key highways linking disparate areas that need possible quick military reaction times (cynical I know but we are talking about Africa,) and all the best roads in the Phils are toll roads so not really comparable.

Do bad roads cause that much damage? If it be your will wrote:Just looking up the cost of road maintenance https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... 712722.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and it appears to cost just over £15/year per person to maintain existing highways. (Or about £22/year per license holder. Or £40/year per car.) I wonder if spending twice this amount would essentially cure the problem, and would most license holders agree to pay the extra it if it did?
Do bad roads cause this much damage to cars per year? It must be close. (I'd pay it, I think.)
Yes and no.
Yes they can if the hole in the road is severe enough, BUT most cars are repaired using cheap parts which don't tend to last all that long compared to better quality products but it's easier to blame the roads.

Re: potholes
Councils have warned that 2017 could be a "tipping point" for tackling potholes.
Analysis by the Local Government Association (LGA) showed the bill for repairing roads in England and Wales could reach £14bn within 2 years. This is several times more than councils' entire annual revenue spending on highways and transport which was £4.4bn in England during 2016.
LGA transport spokesman Martin Tett said "This year could be a tipping point point year regarding potholes. Councils have experienced significant budget reductions and cuts from Central Government and now face the looming prospect of a bill of £14bn to bring the nation's roads up to scratch. It is wrong that the Government allocates almost 40 times more to maintaining national roads, which it controls, compared with local roads, which are overseen by councils. It is paramount this funding discrepancy is swiftly plugged."
This funding discrepancy can only be plugged by Council Tax increases if Central Government is not prepared to put in the money required as it was unwilling to do for Social Care in 2017 and for Police in 2018 where Councils were asked to raise the required funds themselves.

About £400 down from memory....and how more cyclists aren't killed I don't know.

Some of the roads in Nottingham are beyond horrific.
Complete set of lower arms, ARB drop links, ARB bushes, rear springs (broken), rear dampers - 400 odd quid in parts. That's just on this one.
I must have replaced the drop links 3 times in 4 years and full set of struts and springs on my previous car.
That's not to mention all the tyres that have picked up punctures...

In fact the whole transport infrastructure in this country is beyond a joke.
Who thought it would be a good idea to turn the hard shoulder into a lane. I mean really. Why not just do the job properly and add an extra two lanes. The M1 between J23-26 is just disgraceful, there a potholes you could bathe in.
In 5 years time they'll be digging up again to put an extra lane in anyway.

Been a regular visitor to Germany for the last 20 years and they have excellent roads that seem to last without the need for continual repair. Can only summise that we use inferior methods , equipment and materials to build them. Cheap road surfacing to the lowest bidder is false economy.
