Wow, I'd sen he recently had trouble with throat/respiratory tract but that is a bit of a shocker.
He was falsely reported to have died last year but, unfortunately, it seems to be factual this time.
For me, the Fall's output was very patchy but there was some very good stuff amongst it. He was an uncompromising character and very true to himself, pretty much anathema to today's music scene.
RIP Mark E.

Knew he was seriously ill so not a surprise but still a shock. Given his lifestyle probably never destined to live long into old age.

As has been said unique talent and hugely influential. The Fall always sounded so fresh because of the regular turnover of personnel, due in no small part to the fact that MES was notoriously difficult to work with.

So many fantastic songs over 40 odd years, for those of a certain age another part of the fabric of growing up in the late 70s/early 80s passes on - genuinely sad news - RIP

My first ever gig was seeing The Fall at Clitheroe Castle in 1985. Thirty years later I booked them to play in Clitheroe at The Grand. They came to record some of their more recent material at The Grand recording studio in Clitheroe too. Managed to get one last show in 2016 - which was recorded live and released.
Cantankerous as his reputation was, he was always nice as pie in my dealings with him.
Not checked all the YouTube links but Kicker Conspiracy filmed at the Turf seems most fitting for now.
No doubt Radio 6music will be the place to wallow in all things Fall for a few days.
RIP Mark. Twisted genius.

Very sad news.
A mate took me to see them at Band on The Wall yonks ago.
I returned the favour when they played the Moonlight in W Hampstead a year or so later.
Saw them at the Marquee a couple of months after that too.
Never compromised with his music.
I loved their early stuff.
R.I.P Mark.

I knew it was coming and yet I am genuinely shocked and saddened. What a man. I was at that Clitheroe Castle gig Cubanclaret and I think I met you after a Grand gig, the one where Mark E sang from the dressing room! Fall gigs have punctuated my life since about 1980, always different always the same as someone once said. There will never be another like him. R.I.P.

One of those moments was lying in bed listening to John Peel's festive 50 and him saying
here's the Fall and Lucifer over Lancashire. Amazing pairing.

Saw the Fall live. I thought they were live but they might as well have already been dead, they were so dead-pan. The gig equivalent of a 0-0 draw.

The bass player does a great job.

I saw The Fall as a schoolkid sometime back around time of Frenz Experiment. MES with megaphone, leather trenchcoat and what looked like jackboots was proper intimidating. That was before he even started singing/ranting. Great stuff!

I can get that it is an acquired taste and maybe some of the output has been patchy later on but you will not find one dud record from the 80s. Not one. And when you think how prolific The Fall were, that is some going.

RIP Mark

Mark E Smith was a real one off. It's unlikely we'll see another artist quite like him with the longevity and honesty that he and The Fall had. To the earlier comment about later work, their newest album is great and definitely worth a listen.

Their drummer is from over Colne way; he's a top bloke and a great drummer, been with The Fall for 11 years which is a hell of an ...achievement! I'm sad as a fan of The Fall, he's lost one of his mates and that chapter of his life is coming to an end too, which adds to the sadness.

Lots of good clips and anecdotes in social media today. I'm not sure what the man himself would say; probably that he's not really arsed.

RIP. Maybe not in peace, to be fair.

That was a good tribute in the time available, summed a lot of him UP, albeit briefly, to many people like my girlfriend who had no idea who he was.
I'm playing, 'live at the witch trials' right now. There will definitely never be an artist quite like him again. RIP.

RMutt - yes I do remember speaking to you after the show.

Quite a night that. He was on good form and he couldn’t believe I was young enough to have been in attendance at the Clitheroe Castle gig. Charming man ;)

I’ll be doing a two hour radio tribute on Ribble FM 106.7 on Monday night with rammymike should anyone be interested, hopefully including some footage from said Clitheroe gigs and an interview with a lifetime pal of MES
